Mni-Works filter, October 9, 2009
By elkhunterinMontana from Montana

"Excellent product, the only thing I think would improve this is to pump the water a little faster. I like the fact that the bottom of the pump screws right on to my hydo bladder no mess nothing gets wet when fillling."

Field tested for 2 years now.....Great Buy!!!!, January 2, 2009
By Sasqwhat from Charlottesville, VA

"I have been using this model for 2.5 years or so and this is the single most important piece of equipment that I carry on my backpacking tours into remote locations.

This has literally saved my life on more than one instance when I was travelling through the Grand Canyon. I have never gotten sick from water processed with this filter. I have been in situations where I was filtering water that was very dirty and I was concerned that I could get sick from contamination, but the MSR Mini has never let me down and provides great quality water.

I would absolutely recomend this to anyone who is thinking about buying a purifier.

It's a great buy and a great piece of hardware. Make sure to get a bottle to go along with this, it's much easier to deal with pumping directly into an attached bottle v/s trying to pump directly into your hydration pack.

water filter, October 4, 2008
By magdalene from Dolores co

"I purchased a msr water filter. I took it in the mountains 5 miles fly fishing. When I tried to use it it only dribbled water it was defective. On the way out of the mountains it fell our of the pack saddle. I bought another one took it archery hunting this time it worked. The only thing I recommend is a seperate bottle that screws on the filter for easier filling."

Best of the bunch - field maintainable, July 3, 2008
By Mattarov from Fairbanks, AK

"I used this filter for a month on the Appalachian Trail before switching to a bleach system to lower my pack weight. Compared to other filters I saw, many of which used carbon filter elements, this filter with its ceramic element works BEST. ALL filters clog up, regardless of being made of ceramic or carbon mesh. The good thing about this one is that, right when you'd be throwing away the filter element if it was carbon, with this ceramic element you just scrub it off with a green scrubby and it pumps again like new! HIKERS TIP #1 - use a sharp knife blade (instead of the scrubby) lightly drawn along the length of the filter to carefully scrape away the gunk- alternative to the scrubby and sometimes works better. TIP #2 - take a paper coffee filter, fold it over the intake at the end of the hose and rubber band it in place. That will prefilter out most of the big gunk that is the real clogger of your ceramic filter. This will cut down on your cleaning the ceramic part by at least 60-70%. That way you can let the ceramic handle the bacteria and stuff that it is designed to filter and not have to deal with the dirt and algae that really clog it up (that'll all be stuck on your coffee filter). TIP #3 - filter from the cleanest, least turbid/dirty water you can find - as other users have noted. TIP #4 be patient and service it regularly. TIP #5 - whatever you do, don't lose the little valve intake ball - this little black valve ball easily rolls out and blends with rocks and vegetation during cleaning. Good luck!"

Great Little Unit, May 6, 2008
By ScoutsDad from Tucson, AZ

"I purchased this unit to go on a six day backpacking trek with my oldest son into Glacier National Park in 2006. The unit worked great, but the filter does plug up if you pump near the shoreline. You just have to scrub it clean and put it back together again. We pumped water for the whole trek! Last year we took it to the Boundry Waters for a 10 day trek and pumped water for the whole group. No Problems! Great tasting water and every one felt great. Pumped water from the middle of the lake whenever possible and the filter stayed very clean. This year we are going to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for a ten day back-county and I will be toting my faithful miniworks with me again! This filter is not the fastest pump on the market but it is definately one of the toughest. I buy a new filter at the start of every summer just to be safe, but I am probably replacing it much sooner than necessary. Happy Trails!"

Works like a charm, April 3, 2008
By portsampler1 from Alaska

"I have lived in ALaska for many years and used to carry water with me where ever I went. I ran out a lot and had to cut some trips short. Then I bought an MSR. It has saved my behind many times over.
One thing I learned about the MSR is that it can clog very easily with small particals so some good advice to you is:
Don't use it near shore lines as they tend to be packed with tiny particals. Instead take it out a bit further to get better and cleaner water to filter. If the filter does clog up then it will not pump water through. Use the little green scrubby thing that comes with it and scrub the ceramic filter aggressively with it because if you don't it won't work and you end up buying a new filter just like I did and I didn't need to. I give it 5 stars as it is a great product and I have never got any sickness from drinking the water that was filtered through it and I have filtered some gruesome looking stuff.
Happy drinking all!

Awsome, November 30, 2007
By steinerbiner from wisconsin

"Works great. water had no bad taste what so ever. this filter will turn sewage into wine! only down side is having to clean it when the filter gets dirty. make sure you know how to do that when the sun is up so you are not trying to figure it out in the middle of the night dieing of thirst, yeah. when it comes to filtering water, you want something you can trust and this product is just the tool for the job, dependable and trustworthy. recommend this to anyone."

Great filter!, October 12, 2007
By Anonymous from colorado springs

"I have used this filter extensively in the backcountry. It attaches directly to my hydration bladder and the dromedary bag (great for base camp!). It moves water rapidly and with relative ease. The ceramic filter is easy to maintain and replace when needed. With proper care in the field, this product can hydrate a group without headaches!"

MSR Mini-Works, August 6, 2007
By jhpamhunter

"I got this product for the upcoming elk season, with a back country hunt planned. I have been camping/backpacking with it several times. Also got the MSR dromedary bladder to go with it. This product works well and is easy to clean in the field. It is nice to carry a small amount of water so your pack is not loaded down with too much water. I don't mind the size or weight...as you never know when you will run out of water, and how to get more. With this product that concern is more or less eliminated. I have filtered some pretty bad looking stuff and was able to keep going. This is a must have!!"

nakeddoc, April 14, 2007
By warriorhealer from Japan

"I am Recon Corpsman and used this in a training mission in the Phillipines this summer. Due to delayed extract we were forced to purify water for survival. Knowing we had this pump we went on the hunt for water. The water we found had so many floaties in it that looked like manure in the water it was digusting. It was dark and we collected it using NVGs so didn't see the gunk in it. We purified it and I took the first drink. No odor, no funky taste, one happy team. When day light hit we saw the gunk left behind by the filter. We'd have every disease and infestation had it not been for such a excellent product."
