Failed Installation,August 24, 2009

"The steps are of good design, but the universal mount brackets don't work well on my application, 08 Sierra ext. cab. The brackets are thin lightly plated steel, which will rust quickly, the hardware was bright plated, not stainless or galvanized. The steps were rugged, but that's where it ends. If you do buy these steps, you will need a right angle drill - no normal drill will fit between the frame and rocker panel. I wasn't pleased with drilling holes in a newer truck, and just holding the steps with 2 sheet metal screws and 2 small bolts was not, in my opinion, strong enough. Also, the angle setup for my truck - either the steps were pointing up or angled down, not level. There was no way to make the steps level on my truck. After all this frustration, I went to GM and ordered the factory tubes and they used existing holes - no drilling and no frustration. I returned the steps. These will probably fit some vehicles great, but no this truck well."

"Carr's 20" Super Hoop steps appeared to be attractive and sturdy when I received them. I was disappointed, though, with Carr's method of mounting them on my Dodge Ram truck. First U-shaped brackets are attached to the bottoms of the rocker panels with a #12 sheet metal screw at the top and a 5/16" hex-head bolt at the bottom of each rocker panel. Then each arm of the Super Hoop step is connected to a bracket with two 1/4" hex-head bolts. The 5/16" hex-head bolt is secured to a hole drilled through the very bottom of the rocker panel, through a narrow rolled edge, or flange, that is about 1/2" wide. A 5/16" hole through a 1/2" wide flange would leave less than 1/8" of metal at the edge of the flange. On top of that a short piece of 1/2" diameter tubing was inserted over the 1/4" bolt to act as a spacer in the wide gap between the bracket and rocker panel. I realize that Carr had to adopt simple methods for attaching the generic step to all models of pickup trucks, but, I felt the mounting method was too flimsy for my taste.
Rather than return the steps to Cabelas, I decided to fabricate some supplemental brackets to provide stronger means of attachment. Each of these supplemental brackets, made from 1/4" thick steel, are fastened to the rocker panels with six #12 sheet metal screws. Carr's U-shaped brackets then are attached to my brackets with two 5/16" hex-head bolts. The arms of the steps are connected as specified by Carr with 1/4" hex-head bolts - although I substituted high strength bolts for the ones supplied with the steps.
Now my sturdy (and attractive) steps are equipped with equally sturdy mounting brackets, and, I won't have to wince whenever some heavyweight gets into my truck's cab."

"This product would not fit on our Ford 150. There were brake lines running down the side of the truck where the steps were suppose to go. We tried everything and everywhere to put them on but it would stick out to far or would not allow enough step to hang down. Returned product."

"I am very happy with the hoops its going to be a big help getting into the jeep & they look great..I was dissapointed in the finish They were suppose to be a polished finished. It looks like they didn't finish the job they were really rough looking but I polished them myself took a few hours but looks great. Great Looks and Simple Install,July 2, 2007

"I installed two sets of these steps on an '06 Ram MegaCab. I chose these steps because I was afraid that a full width step would make my truck look like it sits lower than it does, and I love that it sits so tall. Installation went pretty smoothly after I got over the fact that I was drilling holes in my new truck. At least on my truck I found it easier to drill through the pinch weld first, mount the bracket to find the top hole, and then measure 18" from the pinch weld hole to find the next mounting location. The directions tell you to first find the top holes, but I found this very hard to do without someone to hold the step in place for me to be able to mark the holes for drilling. Once they are installed they look great and seem pretty sturdy. My steps are all kind of rough in appearance (not smooth in the polished areas), but I don't think that anyone will bend down to look at the step before using it."

"I am very pleased with the design and functionality of the Carr Truck 20" Super Hoop Steps . I ordered the power coated model because it blends well with the lower portion of the truck and does not predominately stand out like many of the Nerf style steps. The steps are well design and are very structurally sound; however, the instructions leave a lot to be desired. The instructions try to cover so many variations of vehicles that I found it best to discard the instruction, examine the hardware provided, and assemble based on a cursory review of the basic instructional information."
