Disappointed,November 17, 2009
By Jonn454from Denham Springs, La.
"Do not buy! I've returned one and the second one, same problem...the clear nylon piece attached to the retracting handle stuck to the body, causing the weigh handle not to function. Pull on it just a bit, nylon piece separates from the handle and still stuck to the body.
Bringing this one back as well, will buy a better brand.
It's not as though this thing was inexpensive, either."

A major disappointment,May 26, 2009
By mvoyagerfrom Pennsylvania
"I have been very impressed with Rapala products over the years. I am not impressed with the Lock 'n Weigh at all.
I purchased the version with the 60 pound spring scale because it looked solid and well-made. Took it home and got it out of its packaging to test the scale. The nylon ring stuck to the scale shaft and pulled off of the handle.
Cabela's accepted the return with no hassle, but based on my experience and other reviews I have now read, they should stop carrying this product until it is redesigned."

will tear up the mouth of a big pike,February 14, 2009
By alsin
"used this in canada recently we hand grab everything that we can, behind the head but on big fat pike over 40 inches we were looking fo an alternative method
the jaw grab works well but we dont catch enough or these guys to get real comfortable putting our fingers into their jaws, especially with multi trebble hooked lures
the grip actually worked well on a few of the fish that didnt thrash around but on the ones that did , the grip just ripped apart their mouths
since we are catch and releas fisherman we no longer use this device.
cant recommend it for pike"

Garbage item,August 7, 2008
By kboogiefrom NYC
"I opened the Rapala ProGuide™ Lock 'n Weigh™/Lock 'N Grip 60 pounds, and it broke within 2 minutes. There is a plastic cover on the scale portion and it ripped out of place. I sent it back and Cabelas was more than helpful with the return process. The first use i got out of it was with a few bluefish. To my surprise the lip grip actually tore a hole through the fish's bottom lip. The fish was too small, i thought to myself. The second bluefish was much larger and again, the lip grip mechanism was too strong and tore the fish's lip. The scale read 4 pounds as my friend's better lip grip read close to 10 pounds. My next trip was out to Montauk to put it to the ultimate test. A nice striper was landed and i immediately wanted to check weight using the lock and weigh. It read 35 pounds as another scale read 42 pounds. The weight was inaccurate, but at least it didn't hurt the fish too bad. Overall this product was a waste of money, and not meet my expectations. I would advise other anglers to spend the extra money and get something better. You will feel better knowing that you purchased a quality item and will keep fish alive and scar free. I'am also considering writing this company a letter concerning their defective item."

Rapala Lock 'n Weigh,April 26, 2008
By omayafrom Discovery Bay, CA
"Exceeds my expectations. Didn't think that it would be as good as the $70 product it but does everything the expensive one does except its not as "nice looking". Easy to use & so far water & impact resistant. We'll see if it can last at least 1 season; I'm pretty sure it'll last at least one."

Rapala Lock'n Weigh,June 19, 2007
By Grubman2from Davis, CA
"I encountered two major problems: 1) it's awkward to get in the fish's mouth, and 2) the weighing scale was off by 1.5 lbs. I imagine other ones would weigh correctly but they would still be awkward. The jaws don't seem large enough or protrude far enough to easily enter the fish's mouth. Also, the little levers inside the jaws get in the way."

Rapala ProGuide Lock'Weigh,May 31, 2007
By grwmo
"I find the scale a little hard to use, especially on smaller fish, 5 to 15lb catfish. It is hard to get in the fishes mouth and in one fish the griper punctured the lower jaw of the fish and was very hard to remove. The lever action of the gripping end of this tool is just to big. The scale is hard to read. Numbers are too small and do not contrast well. The scale seems to be fairly accurate.

Lock 'n Grip with digital scale - horrible,January 23, 2007
By cre8tiv369from Sacramento, Ca
"Scaled arrived, I tested it on a 5lb weight inside of a 20 mil plastic bag. I kept getting different readings anywhere from 4 to 6 lbs, took forever for the scale to settle. I replaced the 9 volt battery with a fresh one, same behavior. I tested my batteries (Energizer and Duracell) with a voltmeter, both batteries were perfect and fresh. Thought I might have gotten a defective scale. Got a replacement and it did the exact same thing. Save your money, this is just a lip gripper with an extremely inaccurate and inconsistent scale attached. The engineering on this product is horrible… a complete waste of money and time. I ended up going with the x-tools scale and love it. Shame on you Rapala."

Rapala Pro Guide Lock N Weigh/Lock N Grip,November 29, 2006
By polymers42from Auburn, California
"The Rapala Lock 'N Weigh has made weighing the catch quicker and safer. By not having to place a hook inside the fishes mouth, which can lead to injury of the fish, it's use is safer for the fish, (not to mention possible contact with sharp teeth). When fishing at Flaming Gorge, the weighing of large 30-40 pound lake trout has been made so much faster and safer with this product. And, being made of stainless steel, there is no worry of it failing when being used in any fishing environment."

Works good for bass and catfish.,November 14, 2006
By illinironfrom Central Illinois
"The Rapala ProGuide Lock 'n Grip with digital scale works well to weigh and bring in larger fish(bass, catfish, etc). If you are looking to weigh smaller fish(bluegill, crappie, etc), I would look for something else to weigh with. The jaws are to large for smaller species."
