Good Kit for the Money,November 14, 2009

"This kit is a bargain (especially at the sale price) but it could be better without increasing costs significantly. The blades hold an edge fairly well but plan to use the sharpener a few times in the field. The handles are comfortable in the hand. I used the "gutless" or Alaskan method on my elk this year and carried only the fillet/boning and skinner knives on the hunt. In addition to the two knives, the saw or a heavier knife is nice to have when removing the legs. The saw was also useful for clearing small downed tree trunks from a couple of roads around the unit. The skinner gut hook seemed somewhat dull and there's no way to sharpen it with the included sharpener. A small cylindrical stone or other sharpener will be required.
It would be nice if sheaths were included in the kit because the complete kit is too large for field carry. Only the saw comes with a blade protector but it's nearly impossible to replace, once removed. The video features hunting footage along with hype and advertising of the product and is nearly worthless as a game processing instructional video. I'd really hoped to learn something about meat processing from it but I managed to butcher my elk anyway and I used all the knives in the kit the process. Personally, I could easily get by without the caping knife or the ribcage spreader but I'll definitely use the shears for game birds.
Although I rate the product 4 stars overall, I'd give it five stars for value."

"Good sharp knife set. Have only used on 1 deer so far. Would prefer a hacksaw style bone saw but the one included works fine after you get used to it. Also would prefer a sharpening steel over the sharpener included but it also is acceptable."

"I bought this knife set a couple years ago after doing a ton of research and so far I have been very disappointed with this set. I used it on an oryx, two deer, and an elk before I got rid of it. The blades dull quickly and they take a long time to sharpen back up, using either the included sharpener or a quality sharpening stone. The only good thing about this kit is the bone saw and the cutting board. The bone saw did make quick work taking off the heads of the animals I have taken so far."

"Outdoor edge has a wonderful rep for making good knives, however the knives that come in this pack are not the same quailty say you would get in the kodie pack. One deer and you spend the next afternoon putting the edge back on the blade. Out of the box they are not super sharp. They dont pass the 'shaving a bald spot on your arm test'"

"I used this set on my first bou I got the other day. The skinner and caper worked great. Held an edge the whole time. The bone saw cuts like a hot knife thru butter. Did not use the fillet knife but I think it will work just as well. The two partners I hunted with were impressed and went online the next day and ordered there own. Taking it to moose camp for the ultimate test and have no reservations about it's performance. Buy it. It works."

"I bought these knives for antelope and deer hunting in South Dakota, I used the knives on three antelope they remainded relatively sharp the entire time without needing sharpened. The only complaint that I have for the knives is that after using them I cleaned the knives and dried them. The next time I went to use them there were rust spots all over the knives. These are relatively good knives, maybe I got a bad set or it was something I used to clean them that caused the problem.I say spend the money on a good set that won't rust."

"I just purchased this set from the Hamburg, PA store, and used it for the first time today. Overall, I'm very impressed. The knives are of fair quality, certainly more than adequate for the task at hand. Most had a good edge on them but one, but it didn't take much on a sharpening stick to get them razor sharp. They seemed to hold an edge pretty well, and having the variety of knife styles close at hand was a big plus in cutting up my deer. I think that you'd be hard pressed to find another set as good as this one for the price. I highly recommend it to anyone that does there own game processing."
