We worked with Meindl to design the new Hiker to specifically handle the absolute toughest
mountainous conditions. Maximum support is needed in steep, rocky terrain, so they're built with a
super-stiff insole for stability and extreme torsional rigidity. A DIGAfix® lacing system creates a
perfect, pressure-free fit around the instep and heel to eliminate blister-causing slippage. And the
Vibram® multi-grip outsole offers non-slip traction on rock walls, scree fields and most any
ground you're likely to encounter. A rubber rand completely encircles the upper for maximum abrasion
protection. Waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® booties combine with a moisture-wicking lining to
keep feet dry in any condition. And a padded collar and fully gusseted tongue eliminate pinching and
binding. An air active footbed guards against ankle- and knee-jarring shocks. The 8" uninsulated

Hiking boots,May 19, 2009
By Toeboxfrom Vancouver Canada
"The reason i bought the Meindl hikers is because Meindl has a bigger toe box than the italian boots.I mail ordered the Meindle Alaskan hikers and took a gamble on the size by using the boots chart. i was close 10.5 d but when i was coming down from a steep hike yesterday my toes were jaming in the toe box getting hot spots.Going up was great lots of stiffness and great traction in snow and slippery conditions, the boots also stayed dry.Should have got a 10.5 EE e I will try to have them punched out, and hope fully that will solve the problem."

Best Boots I've Ever Owned!,January 27, 2009
By pdmackfrom York, Pa
"I'm an advid hunter and backpacker who loves to purchase gear that works with either hobby. Whether treking on the AT or stalking game, my Alaska Hikers are the best boots I have ever owned. I knew they were meant for me from the first moments I had them on. The DigaFix achieves its goal of craddling the heal so that it stays put. I especially love how the tongue protects your foot from the abuse many miles can dish out. Gore-tex always rocks. Meindl has achieved the goal of oneness between the boot and the foot. Their superior German craftsmanship is obvious. It just may be a peerless boot. Don't your feet deserve the very best?"

"I wore my new boots for three days in a row on a central Oregon chukar hunt. My brother, whom I hunted with couldn't believe that I planned on new boots for the outing. I have owned other Meindl boots and have never had a problem. No problem on this outing too. Great boots. Stiff shanks might not be for everyone."

Outstanding Boots,January 2, 2009
By Yoterfrom Southwest Idaho
"These boots are the best pair of boots I've ever owned. I wore them on a December elk hunt with my muzzle loader and spent a week trekking through rainy brush up and down steep ridges in the Salmon River drainage. Later in December I went on a Pheasant hunt in about 6-8 inches of soggy snow. Hiked all day and at the end of the day, my feet were bone dry. These boots are very well made and offer great ankle support.
I would give 5 stars, but the footbed that comes with them is junk. I replaced it with a pair of Meindle "Perfekt" footbeds which should be what comes in all Meindle footwear. These boots are still well worth the price!"

outstanding,October 25, 2008

"If you are checking reviews to determine weather or not to purchase these boots I can tell you, these are the most impressive boots I have ever had on my feet. They are rigid in design provide great ankle support and are lightweight. I find myself wearing them in situations I would normally wear other footwear (sneakers etc). I normally wear a size 9 1/2 however a 9 was a proper fit with heavy socks for me. Don't let the price deter you they are worth it! I will be purchasing a pair of insulated hunting boots as soon as I determine which model buy. You cant go wrong!"

"Out of the box and out to the field. I need a boot with a wide toe box and these boots are great. It's a three season boot that replaced my 20 year old Meildn boots. I will be using the boots for hunting and backpacking for years to come."

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!! BEST YET!,July 11, 2008
By RArockymtnfrom UT
"I know this is long...but these are the best I have found yet. I tried on many famous brands and models of boots, including the Cabelas/Mendl Teton II and Perfect 7 Hiker (nice boots), BUT, I decided to go for the Alaskan Hiker. This is the "most outstanding boot" I have ever used, most comfortable, best fitting, even including my Italian-made leather boots from the 70s which have been my standard for years. Other brands may have been good boots, but in my view, fit, feel, foot, and performance were NOT in the same league with these Cabelas/Mendl Alaskan Hikers for me. I hiked with family in Olympic National Forest in WA for five days. Rocks, water, mud, stream crossings, logs, heavy 80lb+ backpack. These boots were simply "outstanding." No slippage in mud, no feel of sharp rocks, great traction throughout crossing dry and wet logs and tree roots, totally water"proof" standing in the streams, no twisted ankles due to solid ankle support (wouldn't roll over when I was going that direction). Loved the special lacing system, AND the upper padding around ankles and the tongue, GREAT tongue stays in place and is high enough that you get great shin padding. Also, liked the rubber guard to protect leather from rocks. Must say, most expensive I tried but absolutely worth it. BUT, DO BUY the "natural cork" inserts used with the Perfect 7 model (Mendl should "include these" in this caliber of boot) and use them in the Alaskan Hikers. Great fit and sized right for heavier-than-normal socks. I wore polypropylene liners with medium-weight Trekking Extreme Merino Wool socks (padding at pressure points). Terrific combination. The results validate it. Wore these Alaskan Hikers two nights at home in the house and took them on the trail for 40 miles in five days with 15 miles in one day on tough trails. Had to help daughter across shallow stream crossings since there were no logs or bridges on the smaller streams. Actually stood in the shallow spots "in the stream," or on a rock with water over the top, pants got wet, not a drop in the boots, water ran right off when I stepped out. Both people with me had blisters (old trick - use electricians tape to cover) and sore ankles from boot rub in their boots, I had none, no sore spots, no blisters, nothing but just good feet the entire trip, and I was completely out of shape being in my mid 50s with street-shoe feet. This was my first backpacking trip in the last 15 years. Body had issues but foot condition was flawless. I am so impressed with the Cabelas/Mendl Alaska Hikers I am going to buy another pair and "archive" them just in case I need them later in life. Can't improve on these for mountain hiking, heavy backpacking, serious hiking, waterproof performance and when you want something that performs up to a truly exceptional standard. I am NOT easy to impress...this is my first product review...I generally have a monthly bill from Cabelas and get their limited edition catalog...this should tell you something being my first review ever. Use the natural cork inserts, poly liners, medium or light wool socks, lace them properly as they are designed to do, and IF they fit your foot, it doesn't get any better than these Cabelas/Mendl Alaskan Hikers folks."

Meindahl Alaska Hikers,June 21, 2008
By Dmarklfrom Remer, MN
"Excellent boot! I have used it on several mountain hunting trips in very rugged terrain and it has performed flawlessly. Break in time for me was longer than described by other reviewers (I could not have hunted in them out of the box) but I planned on that. I have hunted in the snow and in 60 degree temperatures and been very comfortable. Lacing system holds the foot securely in place with no slippage going up, down or sideways on steep slopes. Very light as mountain boots go but provides outstanding stability. I stood in standing water for 6 hours with no leakage! Large toe box is much appreciated with my wide feet but the heel is still snug (which can be a problem for me with most boots that are wide enough in the toe area). Best boot I have ever owned and I have had a lot of them!"

Good general purpose mountain boot,January 15, 2008
By Goat14Kfrom Colorado Springs, CO
"Before I ordered the Alaska Hikers, I read various reviews of other Meindl boots. Reviewers pretty consistently mentioned that Meindl boots tend to run a bit large. I ordered mine according to Cabela's chart, and, indeed they were a bit large. But, they also have a deep toe box which invites thicker socks. The socks which fit the boot to my feet also gave the right height in the toe, resulting in a perfect fit right out of the box (and warmer feet this winter). Fortunately, the Alaska Hikers have stiffer soles than the walking shoes that are usually sold as hiking boots. So far they seem to be a good general purpose mountain boot, in fact, probably the best I've found in the past 20 years. The one complaint which keeps me from giving a 5-star rating is the material around the top of the boot which is too stiff and too rough. It would be a big improvement if Meindl used somewhat softer foam in the scree cuff and lined it with smooth goat skin instead of slightly rough fabric. As I have worn the boot, the top has softened a little, though. So, by the time I have gotten back in 7 league shape after a few sedentary months, I should have 7 league boots, too. It's still too soon to say anything about how durable the boots are. For now, I like them."

Review 15 for Cabela's Alaska Hiker Boots by Meindl
"I purchased Cabelas Alaska Hiker uninsulated boots for hunting chukar partridge in steep, rocky canyons along the Columbia River in Central Washington. The exterior of these boots is very tough - the full circle rand is great and and the mid and outsole protects your foot in jagged rock scree. The vibram outsoles are tough; the trade-off is the hard rubber makes these boots very slick on vegetation or wet rock surfaces with any slope. Use them on a trail in totally dry, or totally flat conditions, or you'll be sliding. Insole is very poor - no cushioning and has course surface which creates friction and heat. Hotspots on bottoms of both my heals. I replaced them after my first 8-hour hunt in steep country with no trails. Cabelas needs to replace the insole with softer insole for sure - smoother face material with memory foam. Digi-fix Lacing system is very good, no lace creep at all. Overall, an average pair of boots in steep country if you plan to side-hill much while hunting."

Best Boots I've Even Owned,November 20, 2007
By onobofrom SF, CA
"Full 5 stars from me. I've gone through a lot of boots looking for what I wanted, these are it. I've had a lot of ankle injuries and presently have ligaments detached, so my boots need to be all about ankle support. These fit the bill. They may be a little stiff still, I only have about 100 miles in them. Great on rock and side hills. I have big calves so I was also looking for 8" boots. I did put in a set of SuperFeet insoles, way better than the stock insoles."

Worth every penny!,November 16, 2007
By DJ3363from Mid-Atlantic working as a wildlife photographer
"If you are going off the trail in hilly or mountainous terrain get this boot. Stability is excellent, traction is excellent, comfort is excellent, all this in a relatively light weight boot. I used this boot in the mountains carrying about 15 lbs of photo gear on my back and about another 20 lbs worth of tripod, lens and camera body on my shoulder. I did not turn an ankle once and had excellent traction on very steep grades. I literally wore these boots all day long for week right out of the box. I didn't even get on hot-spot let alone a blister. Excellent Product, Expertly Made and worth every penny!"

Meindl Alaska Hiker,November 11, 2007
By Waxman10from Colorado
"I bought these boots 3 weeks ago, never broke them in and used them for an entire week while hunting in Colorado for the first time and never developed one blister! These boots were amazing. I wore them everyday, all day and I couldn't believe their performance. The only apprehension I had when I first put them on was the left boot was slightly tighter than the right one. My left pinky toe felt a little cramped but it amounted to nothing. I recommend this product for any serious hunter."

"Great boots, just used them on my Idaho elk hunt and they held up great. Hunted in very step country the support is great. Packed out a 6x6 bull on pack frames 100 plus pound packs, you need support. This is my second pair and I love them."
