We worked with Meindl to design the Alaska Hunter to handle the absolute toughest mountainous conditions. Maximum support is needed in steep, rocky terrain, so they're built with a super-stiff insole for stability and extreme torsional rigidity. A DIGAfix® lacing system creates a perfect, pressure- free fit around the instep and heel to eliminate blister-causing slippage. And the Vibram® multi- grip outsole offers non-slip traction on rock walls, scree fields and most any ground you're likely to encounter. A rubber rand completely encircles the upper for maximum abrasion protection. Waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX® booties combine with a moisture-wicking lining to keep feet dry in any condition. And a padded collar and fully gusseted tongue eliminate pinching and binding. An air active footbed guards against ankle- and knee-jarring shocks. The 10" Hunter has 200-gram Thinsulate™ insulation for enhanced cold-weather performance. These are the ultimate Alpine boots. Made in Germany.

Meindl Alaska = Pure Performance, November 3, 2009
By teeaykay from Green Bay, WI

"After weeks of research and deliberation for a boot suited to the rigors of supporting my 250# carriage, and an elk laden pack frame in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, the Meidl Alaska became the front runner.

If your haven't any experience packing a frame of meat in a backcountry setting please take the time to consider the essential qualities of the proper foot gear needed for this task. An ultra stiff sole, a rigid and uncompromising ankle support design with torsional rigidity, and a rubber rand for durability are MUSTS. Personally, i could take or leave the whole gore-tex technology as a boot of this quality is highly water repellent by its design. Consider it a bonus in this particular case.

Having had a bad experience with a lesser pair of soft soled boots on the Agashoshak River during a 2004 Caribou hunt in Alaksa I promised my bruised feet that never again would I give any thing less than the highest priority to my foot gear.

As the owner of Salomon, Danner, Red Wing, Rocky, Keens, LaCrosse and sundry other mid level - high quality outdoor foot gear I will be the first to admit that shoes/boots in this calibre are very much a personal/fit decision and what has worked for me may not work equally as well for others. I will also say, however that with every pair of boots I have owned, I felt the need to compromise in some aspect - not true of the Meindl's.

    A couple of technical notes:

    1. In soles - the quality of the insoles needs to be understood going into this purchase...these soles are not meant to be a long term use sole. Do yourself a favor and purchase the companion Meidl Perfekt Cork Insole....there is no better insole for these boots. The cork footbed requires use to confrom to your foot. Pick your socks wisely and wear the boots for a week or so and you will be very pleased.

    2. Break-in: Regardless of what the reviews say, proper break in on a boot of this calibre is essential to your comfort and the long and useful life of this boot. Follow the clearly written directions and you will do fine. Personally I wore these boots as much as possible for 2 weeks after purchase and they were as comfrotable as bedroom slippers after break-in (4-5 days).

    3. Sizing: My only disappointment in the purchasing process came when I traveled 125 miles to the Richfield, WI store only to find that they didn't have this model in inventory. Learn from my mistake and call first. I was able however to try on various other Meindls and other lesser brands which futher forged my thinking on the Alaskan. My experience is that the Meinld boots are a size larger (lenght only) than other footwear, and tend to run a bit on the narrow side. As such I ended up with a size 11 in the wider width and the fit was "perfekt".

    4. Sole Selection (Category): Meindl categorizes the performance of their footwear with an alphabetized tag system (A= Leisure, A/B=Easy Hikes, B=Demanding Hikes, B/C=Demanding Trekking, C=Trips to the High Mountains, D=Crampon compatible boots. The Alaskan is the highest performing Meindl boot available through Cabelas and is rated as a "C". There is a significant difference between this boot and the other models avaialable at Cabelas. Choose with eyes wide open.

    5. Lacing Design: My favorite feature of this boot is the lacing system. It is apparent that a significant amount of experienced engineering has gone into this lacing system. The "foot" portion of the boot is laced with typical steel "P" lacing rings followed by a series of speed hooks of various design including 2 sets of clamp hooks which allow various levels of lacing tension in the respective portions of the boots.

After purchasing the boots and prior to break-in I followed the waxing procedure recommended by Meindl and applied 2 separate coating of wax.

Performance in the field was as it should be...uneventful. The boots were fully broken in and did thier job flawlessly in a snowy, wet, high altitude environment.

This is a long review however it reflects my satisfaction with this particular item

    Great Boots....Horrible Inserts, October 19, 2009
    By tctopcat from TX

"These boots are extremley well made, lace up good have sufficient lace locks to allow three different zones of tightness. Mine required a few hours of hard hiking to lossen them up and break them in but no blistering occurred. The footbeds are just terrible in particular for the heels, my heels felt bruised after wearing them the first time. I bought a pair of gel inserts at Cabelas and slipped them in and the boots are great now. I would have given five stars if it were not for the inserts....cmon Cabela's and Meindle get more comfortable inserts for these boots so they get the five stars they deserve!!!!!"

Absolutely the Best Hunting Boots, October 3, 2009
    By HikeForever from Edmonds, WA

"It's been two years since I purchased Meindl's "Alaska Hunter" boots based on reading rave reviews on the AK outdoor forum (hunting). At first I was aprehensive about the higher price as I usually settle for $150 boots but I'll never go back. The firm sole and ankle support have minimized my energy expenditure hiking up and down steep terrain and across the loose rock scree along the higher slopes. The solid support is critical when carrying full packs on unstable ground. These boots have carried me thru two fully packed years of hunting and hiking without one complaint. My hunting partner bought these boots after my first elk hunt with them and has had the same positive experiences. These are by far the best hunting/hiking boots I've owned and will definitely be my next boot purchase (if they ever wear out)."

Alaska Hunter for high alpine terrain, September 27, 2009
    By SpecialForces from Utah

"I bought this boot for my goat hunt. My base camp is 13 miles from the trail head. I was concerned about a new boot walking this distance. Because of time constraints I did not have a chance to break the boot in; however, on every trip I have taken they have been comfortable and performed in every way I expected. These boots perform perfect for their design. They are designed with a stiff sole and incredible ankle support. They are great for rock crawling and steep terrain. If you are looking for a trail hiker, these are not what you are looking for. I recommended these boots to a friend and he read some of the negative reviews written by other customers; when I read the reviews my first thoughts were that they were written by competitors and not real customers. One review in particular…Cabelas stands behind all of their products if they don’t perform or are unsatisfactory they will take them back, enough said. This is one of the boots that has been recommended for military use in mountaineering."

Alaska Hunter Boots, September 25, 2009
    By TO from Colorado

"These boots are exceptional. My feet have never been wet in these boots, even when hunting in two feet of snow. They are very comfortable once you have broken them in....takes about a month or so of good walking/hiking. I would definitely recommend getting out with these boots prior to hunting and putting some miles on them so that your feet are comfortable. Also, take out the insoles that come with the boots and put in some of your own. Once you have these boots broken in and have your own insoles in them you will be very impressed."

Excellent Product for Sheep Hunting, September 22, 2009
    By Mtsheep from Anchorage, Alaska

"My son and I purchased this boot to chase sheep around in the Alaskan mountains in early September. I was very impressed with the support the boots provided our ankles and how comfortable they were. We each had maybe 5 hours breakin time on the boots which I would recommend extending before such a trip, but there were only minor foot problems. I had a small blister from side hilling so much but I think that would have occurred with any boot. I did end up putting a sorbane inner sole in mine which provides more cushion than the Meindl insoles but overall, I was very pleased. Comparable boots bought locally were at least $350-400."

Fantastic Mountain Boots!!!, September 13, 2009
    By Bondedclaw from Lewiston, ID

"I live in Idaho where it seems my hunting takes me to the most rugged places in the lower 48. Anyway, it seems over the past several years, I have been on a quest for the ultimate mountain boot. That was until now, these Meindl Alaska boots are by far the best boots I have ever had the pleasure to wear. They require little break-in, are waterproof, breathable and provide exceptional ankle support! I have never owned such an expensive pair of boots, but trust me they are worth every penny!
    Respectfully,
    Bearclaw

    happy feet, September 7, 2009
    By LarryAK from Anchorage, Alaska

"I recently returned from a sheep hunt in the Delta Management Area of Alaska. I purchased a pair of Meindl Alaska Hunter boots for the occassion, after having my feet nearly destroyed last season while wearing an older pair of footwear. These Meindls were referred to me by my son-in-law who wore them during last season's hunt. He was the only person in our group of 4 that did not get blisters. I must say I am thoroughly impressed with these boots. The 200 grams of insulation kept my feet very warm while climbing around Jarvis Glacier, and the ankle support was more than adequate for these old bones of mine (I am 62 this September). Also, I found it very easy to adjust the lacing as necessary to accomodate side-hilling or dropping down nearly 1000 feet with a load on my back. I am very pleased to announce that I too was blister-free after a week in the rugged alpine terrain. I would recommend this footwear to anyone who has a mountain hunt planned."

$ boots but very comfortable, August 2, 2009
    By ArcheryElk from Reno, NV

"This is the most I have ever spend on boots and although they are extremely comfortable I guess I was expecting more. You will probably have to replace the insoles which is the reason for 4 stars. If you use superfeet be sure to go a size or 2 larger than your boots. The other reason is there is a squeak that develops around the side where leather overlaps. If you keep the area waxed or oiled it is not a problem. Tried the Kenetrek Mt Extreme and did not find them near as comfortable."

Rebate Hiking Boots, June 15, 2009
    By dlmfishandhunt from W.PA.

"I spent the $250 rebate on these hiking boots. Inserted a gel heel and arch pad and went hiking on steep ups and downs in NW PA. After five hours of hiking, I washed the mud off, and declared these boots to be outstanding! Only boot I will wear while deer and turkey hunting and hiking in general. The bellows tongue and lacing allow for easy on and off. A very high quality boot."

Worth the cash!, February 18, 2009
    By ACArkansas from Fayetteville, AR

"I finally broke down and spent the money on high-end boots and it is definately worth it. I hunt in an abandoned rock quarry for whitetails and make an annual trip to Idaho for elk, so I needed boot that stands up to abuse and these have delivered. After about 6 miles of trekking, they broke-in and are very comfortable. The rubber rand works great in the rocks of the quarry and the lacing system is great; no foot movement and still comfortable. Great for side-hilling. I only have 30 miles on them, but they're well built, so I expect them to last a long time.

Like everyone else states, the supplied insoles are only good for using as a pattern to cut new ones. I highly suggest Superfeet insoles, they dont seem like much out of the box, but after the first hike your hooked.

"Great boot! Last pair I had was the canadians and they lasted me seven years. Used this pair guiding in northern B.C chasing after goats and mountain caribou. I had hunters absolutely drooling over these boots. Great support, no break in time, comfortable, and totally durable. Rocks don't even touch these thanks to the wrap around rubber. Very waterproof. No complaints at all."
