Knife, compass, matches and my Rino 530hcx, September 15, 2009
    By sez388 from Marshfield, Massachusetts

"I happened upon these reviews while shopping online. I bought my Rino last year and have used it in Northern Maine, Southeastern Massachusetts and in Michigan's Upper Penninsula. I consider it to be one of my required pieces of equipment, especially since I hunt alone frequently. I did buy the topo map chips and the AA battery pack, and I knew I would have to when I bought the unit.

I have owned gps units for longer than I can remember, marine and land. This is by far the best handheld that I have ever had. The battery life is very good, I get a whole day out of it. The map detail is excellent, I was surprised to find some of my 'secret' logging trails in the UP clearly defined. Accuracy is outstanding, I have had to use this unit to bring a small boat into a protected harbour in fog. The radio is outstanding and as performs as good as or better than any of the GMRS units my friends carry afield.

I want to caution readers that most of the negative comments are due to the users inability to use the unit, it can be very complicated in some of the extended functions. In the field I adjust the menu to the show only the most needed functions.

My only regret is that my hunting partner does not have one so that we could use the peer to peer functions, which I cannot comment on.

    GREAT UNIT!!!!!, June 4, 2009
    By RomeoC2Sea from livingston Texas

"I own other hand held GPS units but wanted the radio feature. This unit has all described plus more! Not that diffucult to learn how to use just takes time and playing with it. The weather band seems weak, as my other weather radios work well. I'll take the trade off! I'm a full time RVer, am always in the wilderness and must say this is the BEST unit of the 3 others I own. Keep a eye out if you don't want to spend the extra money on this unit, you can buy ALL of my old ones on a popular selling sight! But save the money and BUY THIS ONE! YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID!!!!
I also bought the Topo maps and will be buying the street maps. Topo is a MUST for the woods. My real location is the USA !

Great for off and on roads., May 31, 2009
    By cardopolis from Harrisonburg VA

"Ok, it doesn't have a great big screen like a car model does, but if that's what you intend to use a GPS solely for then don't get this. In a pinch it's worked for us on and off road—getting us to our destination just fine. It picks up satellite signals in under a minute and it recalculates as fast as any other Garmin car model I've used. I've used touchscreen models, and they are not as fast as the 520HX's 'joystick' control. The newer 'roll/clickwheel' navigation style controls and menu are cool, but that's about all they are--they aren't very functional. The screen on the 530HX is very bright for daylight use. The NOAA weather station works great, haven't had to use it yet, but if I do, I'll be glad to have it. We have 2 of these and the peer to peer locating function has worked flawlessly (we hunt dense VA woods and stay within 300-400 sq. acres—mtns, hills, streams and fields). Used it last year to mark rubs and scraps around the ranch, then loaded all points into mapping software. Helped me figure out a few good places to setup for next fall.

Pay more for the color screen and NOAA radio, you'll be glad you did. I'd give it a 5 star if the screen was bigger—but that's because I'm near sighted.

    It's great, March 31, 2009
    By PaulDDS from Minnesota

"This thing does lots of stuff. It takes some practice to familiarize yourself with it (like a gun or anything else). The photos in the catalog are carefully taken to not show the bulky battery - but, it lasts ALL day. I'm not displeased with it. More rechargeable batteries and non-recharegable packs can be purchased. I would not only recommend this product to others, I'm going to buy another one."

    Why???, November 19, 2008
    By AChamp from Chehalis WA

"Why did I not get one sooner!!!!
I spend a lot of time in the woods and after one season of using my 530HCX, I am wondering how I ever hunted without it.
There is a lot to learn with all the features but that will come with time.

    I absolutely love it.

    Garmin Rino 530 HCX, October 22, 2008
    By TIPTOPSAR from Pinedale, WY

"I have used this GPS with our county Search and Rescue Team. It is very helpful for the incident comander to be able to direct the line of travel of the team using the location sending option on the Rino. I have used 2 other Garmin units and this one by far is the most powerful which means it is not as fussy about use in a car or boat. Great unit but you have to practice with it."

Garmin Rino - Repeater use GOTCHA, October 10, 2008
By renoandy from Volunteer Search and Rescue, Reno, NV

"As previously mentioned in other reviews, the documentation is weak. This is specifically evident for customers that purchase this unit with intention to use it for peer-to-peer location, such as myself, only to be discouraged by the expense and misrepresentation of a feature that does not work on repeater channels.
BEWARE! You lose this peer-to-peer location feature when operating with a GMRS repeater! For some reason Garmin has locked out the locate feature and will not transmit the data on the repeater channels. Too bad!; Even though the use of a repeater implies that your peers are more that a few miles apart (...the reason to use a repeater).. This is when the feature would be most beneficial!! As a result it looks like the Rino is really just a peer-to-peer communication toy. You are much better off getting a Tech licence in the amateur radio band and using APRS to locate your distant hunting buddy at half the cost :) !!!

    By Grissom from Montana

"WOW! Great screen and easy use...after you spend some time with it. Expensive but very useful. The companion tracking is a lifesaver! I have also purchased the TOPO US DVD and the level of detail is outstanding. Make sure you get an 8GB microSD card if you want the entire US on one card! To get that last star, it would have to be about 1/2 the price!"

    By NevadaJohn from Sparks, Nevada

"I upgraded from a Garmin 120 to the 530HCX. The increased screen size and color makes it much easier for me to use without finding my glasses. The extra storage capacity allows me to load data for all the areas that I hunt. The 530HCX is a great product."

Not as good as I thought it would be., January 3, 2008
    By gpsuser from Oregon

"Okay out of the box the first thing i noticed is it HUGE! Looks good from the front and all the pictures, but what they are not showing is the battery sticks out the backside doubling the thickness of the unit. Small hands will not like this unit! Ladies check it out before you buy. My wife hates it. While we are on the subject of the battery, it's a rechargeable! That is great as long as you are near a power source. But what happens if you are out hiking and the battery goes dead? Or you are on a week long hunting trip with no power. (we stay out over 10 days) Lucky for us they will sell you for another $25-$30 a 'AA' adapter to use standard batteries. Not included in the box. Also not included in the box: are any maps or topo data. They have software where you can buy more maps for $100-$200, but does a poor job of explaining it all. To be fair the unit does have a BASE MAP in it. Mine has a weak road system that doesn't inlcude even 50 percent of the roads that have been around for 40 years. It does have major highways and cities. But who is going to use this in the truck? Also no topo data unless you pay. So without planning to spend and extra $200-$500 for accessories, this unit is just as good as my $99 Magellan. The flyer says external temp readings. I can't find this feature anyplace on the unit (it was oneof the reason I went for the 530 instead of the 130). The manual sucks. Very poor job of explaining things like repeater channels, WAAS, software, memory cards, etc. You will have to go online and research them yourself.
Pro's: it picks up locations fast as long as you haven't moved 100 miles or so. GMRS Radio and NOAA weather alert are great.
Overall this unit is very expensive for what you get out of the box. It could be great, but falls short of my modest expectations.
