Does not Replace the 12, September 25, 2008
    By Etgwy

"i expected this GPS 76 to be able to "follow" me around as did the Garmin 12. no such luck. therefore it does not provide the type of info needed while hands are occupied with other activities, such as hunting.
    sending it back.

    Does what I expected, October 22, 2007
    By Beerman99 from Michigan

"The unit works well, but Garmin does not make downloading map software very user friendly - in fact mine was a real pain. The codes that came with the software did not work and I had to call the Garmin helpline to get something that would work. The Garmin helpline has limited hours and it took a coupe of days to get a simple download finished."

Hard to Read, August 28, 2007
    By Cabstuff from Missouri

"This unit does everything one may need to navigate on the road or trail; however, during bright daylight the screen is very hard to read. Even with the contrast set at maximum, the graphics and text are quite dim, especially troublesome when navigating by auto."

    You Can't Get Lost..., November 20, 2006
    By CandleMan0812 from Lima, Ohio

"My wife & I purchesed the Garmin GPSMAP 76S this summer. We have the unit in the vehicle all the time.. On the highways, you know what exit is coming up next and what is at that exit...We have set waypoints at several locations in several states, including the Cabelas in Dundee, Mi...Once, we were in Monroe, IN and decided to go on a little trip...I had my wife set a route to the Cabelas and we followed the GPS map to find our way there...The arrow always knows...We also go hiking through Ohio...We took the GPS on a hike to Clifton Gorge around Yellow Springs, Ohio...When we got home we downloaded our trip from our house in Lima, Ohio to the Parking Lot at Clifton Gorge..and dthe whole trail we hiked was maped out on the computer...We plan on going to Colorado this summer to visit our Granddaughter and the kids. We are taking the Garmin with us and will be handy when we hike the trails of Mt. Massive. This model also has the altimeter funlction which has been real helpful in some hikes and I can't wait to climb the 12-14,000' mountains next summer."

    GPSMAP76S, November 17, 2006
    By geocacher from Indiana

"The large display is easy to see even when mounted.
The display can be set up to show a good portion of map and still have the speed, altitude, distance to next waypoint, estimated time of arrival, and the next road. There are several menu selections that can be viewed.

I like the "Next road" feature that shows the name of the next road. It also shows what services are available at intersections of the interstate, like Shell gas station or McDonald's and the phone number.

The electronic compass is awesome for geocaching. It is also easy to calibrate. Also for geocaching there are several icons for waypoints such as geocache (ammo box) or geocache found (open ammo box)

The altimeter is fun to use when going through the mountains.
We also used it professionally for determining potential tower line of sight for wireless networking. Trying to find a tower with binoculars it helped to know where to start looking.

There is an anchor drag feature if you are a boater. You set a distance in feet and if you travel further than that it will sound an alarm. Lets you sleep better knowing you are in the same place.

I have a RAM mount for mine and recommend the car cord. They also have a data cord that is required to upload/download maps and waypoints.

I also bought the Garmin Mapsource Metroguide and the topo software. The metro guide will expand the basemap and insert roads and features for the area you want to concetrate on. The base map is fine for the interstate but the software puts in a lot more detail.

The joystick makes navigating the menus easy.

I like the fact that it takes AA batteries. I think a rechargeable would be a pain unless you had two batteries to swap. Several times I've been looking for a cache and the batteries died.

Overall it is a rugged unit with rubber all the way around. It is waterproof and floats.
