"I have been using this whistle on a daily basis for more than 2 years and love it. Our springer has 2.5 acres to roam and comes every time I blow it. When I first got it I also thought it didn't work. You need to remove the black dust cover and unscrew the nut to find the right pitch for your dog. If your dog's ears perk up when you blow it you got the right pitch! I use krazy glue to keep the nut in place pop on the dust cover thats it. Yes you can hear it slightly but its not loud like a regular whistle."

"It seems too small to work well---the dog next door, just a few feet away, doesn't seem to notice the sound at all. I may not be setting the sound correctly, so for someone else, it may work, but it isn't for me. There is a setting on the whistle and I have tried different settings, but none are noticable to the dog next door."

"Pull off the black plastic cover, adjust pitch to make both audible to you and your dog, tighten lock ring, go train. I applied threadlock once I really dialed it in. Haven't had a problem. Yes, better directions would be helpful, and that's why I gave it only 4 stars. If you get outwitted by a whistle, please don't hunt with Buster and I.
This whistle is a must if you are and urban trainer, like myself, and can't wake the neighbors at 5 a.m. The neighborhood dogs go silent when they hear."

"ok i bouth this because it was cheep and i disregarded all the bad reviews. I am glad I did. When you get this take off the black cover ( Kind of hard) and adjust it to your dog. Make sure you tighten the lock on it. It works great havent had a problem yet"

"this whistle works really well and my dog comes to it almost every time. it didn't take very long to train her either. it is not really silent, but I haven't found a truly silent one yet. it makes a barely audible sound that I can hear. my dog seems to be able to hear it from very far away though! would definitly buy again!"

"When I received the whistle it blew quite loudly. I had thought it was a silent whistle as the name infers; however, it was quite loud. I had been working training with my dogs when one day I blew the whistle (I've had the whistle for maybe 3 weeks) and no sound came out. My dogs do not act as though they hear anything either. I am unhappy with this purchase!"

"I've had this whistle for a couple of years now. Funny how people complain about not hearing a "silent" whistle. Anyway, I trained my dog with it, (always helps to train the dog) and now in the field when the dog gets too excited and is running after a bird he thinks has fallen but hasn't I give it a couple of toots and he understands thats theres nothing there and to come back.
I adjusted the tone so I can still hear it a bit, but its pretty quite, at least to MY ears.
If you buy any whistle and expect any dog to just automatically react to it, you're barkin up the wrong tree."

"I purchased the whistle hoping it might prove useful to distract the dogs that usually bark at me, or chase me, while I am running. Since purchasing it, I have taken it out twice, and the whistle failed even to attract a single dog's attention, despite being tried on some twenty dogs. Additionally, as the heat I generate running finds its way into the whistle, it stops working, apparently due to thermal expansion of its parts."

"If my dogs are sitting in front of me I blow this and they perk up their ears and cock their heads. Otherwise in the field or yard they ignore it totally and will not answer to it for whistle commands. A friend saw it and said he would tease me for having it but he bought one once also. Might work for a house dog but is useless in the field."
