80-year-old design, Johnson's Silver Minnows attract bass, northern pike
and other species in freshwater and they're ideal in saltwater for redfish

"My go to or confidence lure. In any weed situation, I use the Silver Minnow with a 3in. curly tail grub and "walk" it through weeds and over lilly pads. It works in the ponds on Cape Cod and in the lakes of New Jesey. I wouldn't go out without several in my tackle box."

A Timeless Classic That Catches Fish,July 28, 2009

"I got my first Johnson Silver Minnow from my dad almost 50 years ago. Since then, it has been my failsafe lure when not much else worked. I had not fished much the last ten years, but went to a local lake recently and caught three nice sized rainbow trout on a Silver Minnow while wading the shallows of a slough off the lake. My son joined me, but had nothing the fish would hit until I gave him my Silver Minnow. He was amazed that the trout immediately went for the minnow after everything else he had presented. I decided to stock up and got a couple of every size available -- one for me, one for my son. I have nothing bad to say about this lure. It's totally weedless, catches fish and can be presented in a whole bunch of different manners, depending on the situation. Since it's weedless, I've actually never lost one, but just decided to branch out and have several different sizes. I have caught bass, catfish trout, redfish, wipers and tiger muskie on this lure. I'll keep some in my tackle box for when nothing else excites the fish."

"I have used these lures every year when we go yo maine. The pike love em' and occasionally you can catch a few bass. I enjoy reeling in the line of a big ol' pike so these lures are perfect. Grest for a beginner because you just have to cast and reel. Weedless to so you can get into the mucky areas they like to hide."

"I recently purchased some Silver Minnows for a bass fishing trip. After catching two bass the paint was 3/4 off the lure. I tried another painted lure and after five fish the paint was also gone. The lure catches fish but I do not recommend buying the painted. Stick with the plain lures."

"Took a bunch of Johnson minnows on a week long fishing trip to Canada, NWT. Unfortunately, ALL of the Johnson minnows that we had on the trip that were painted all peeled down to the bare metal finish. Clearly, they do not prep the surface to be able to stand up to any abuse. I would expect chipping and other surface damage, but to lose the entire surface was unacceptable."

"I have used both painted and solid spoons for bass and notherns and even the ocational walleye. Best used with a tail and fished not to fast because of line twist. Use the correct size, to large might get you a long cast but may be to heavy for weeds and pads. When I fish tourniments I fish the minnow and my partner goes more finese, if he misses the fish I get em with the minnow. I don't miss many, and we do well this way. I don't think the fish care if the bait is painted, it's more for us to buy more. Silver and gold work just great!!!"

"Had some explosive hits with this lure on the Gulf coast of Florida. An awesome attractor when you add a curly tail from a grub to the hook. I had a school of Speckled Trout destroy one of these. All I came back with is line! They took the flurocarb leader, lure, tail and all. Can't wait to try this beauty in the mangroves tossing it to tailing Redfish. Gold or gold with red scale works best."

"Greatest lure ever made. Glides through weeds in shallow water and redfish cannot resist them. Needs to be washed with fresh water after using in salt water to prevent corrosion. A little corrosion, and the hook will snap off on a large redfish."

"Forget the painted models, the silver or gold is just great for northerns. Troll past the edge of the weeds or cattails, slowly, just fast enough to keep it wobbling and not bouncing along the bottom. The big northerns will come out of the weed cover and attack it like Grant taking Richmond. Use a 6 inch wire leader and swivel if you want to keep it for a while... those northerns have teeth!"

"I ordered the chartreuse shad color and the red shad. The chartreuse lost all of its paint in the first three hours of use and the red shad is not far behind. This was not banging off rocks or wood, just lilly pads. I intend to stop in at a store with these items and ask for a refund when I travel out West. Very, very disappointing for a lure I have been using for almost 50 years."

"This is # 1 in Northern Canada for Big Northern Pike. Use it with a long worm or just plain. This is for casting not the dull trolling usually done in Southern Canada. Silver may be best but Gold is also good. We use the big spoons, over 1 oz. They go through the weeds pretty well."
