A beautiful Gun Period... But, September 28, 2009
By Chevy55 from Rockland, NY

"It would have been perfect had they sanded around the trigger guard. Furthermore I noticed 2 "X's" on the plate that screws to the gun and they silvered over it. Only thing I can think of is it failed QA inspection for final finish, marked an X on it but somehow got through and they plated over the 2 X's. Plus over $100 was marked off the price so I'm not complaining. The only time I notice it is when I turn the gun upside down, LOL. The $100 off gave it 5 stars or it would have been 4 plus returned.

Didn't shoot it yet living in NY above the big apple. Where I live the mere sight of a gun gets a call to the police, my neighbors are sick. This gun is heavy, heavier then my 58 Buffalo Bill pistol with the 12 inch barrel I picked up years back for $100.

Pretty nice, September 9, 2009
By ScubaGunner from Owings Mills, Maryland

"Fit and finish of the gun is very good but far from perfect. My gun has some obvious metal tooling slip marks (runaway grinder or something similar). In spite of that, overall look of the gun is very impressive. Timing is perfect and trigger is silky smooth, almost like it had some custom trigger work done for target shooting. Comparatively with my Cabela's Remington 1858, trigger pull and feel is much better on this Colt's copy, but Remi is finished better and visually appears to be of the higher quality."

if you want it get it!, August 12, 2009
By ruskcty from Tony, WI

"I have owned many black powder revolvers over the years and none have been as nice as this one. The fit and finish is truly beautiful. The color case hardening is every bit as nice as my real colt revolver. The action is tight with no complaints there. I have not shot it but will comment on that once I get a chance to. Don't let the Uberti snob's down talk the Pietta. I have owned both now and Pietta is every bit as nice."

The 1851 Navy Civilian: Top Quality, August 3, 2009
By bobofva from Yorktown

"I now have four black powder revolvers and this one has the highest level of quality of the four. The fit, finish and function are excellent. Silver plating on the brass parts is very classy looking. It is also very practical in that there is no exposed brass to discolor and look bad over time. I have not bought a product with which I've been more pleased. It is a beautiful, well made revolver."

1851 civilian, August 3, 2009
By adaptandovercome from West virginia

"I was shocked when this arrived it was full of what looked to be rust but after cleaning it looks good now. The cylinders and nipples was corroded BAD. THis was the bad point. But after I cleaned it up I went out and shoot it and was immpressed!! I will still buy more guns from Cabelas I just hope the other ones do nt need to be cleaned for an hour before they are enjoyed."

Nice piece!, January 18, 2009
By charcoal

"Very nice gun, the manufacturer I can't name here has improved very much since I started buying these back in 2003. I had a Brass "Reb" .44 that had bad indexing back in 04, so I was pleased that this newer Navy Civilian seems mechanically solid. These are a "hybrid" gun, not totally historical, but maybe could have existed. It's simply an 1860 Army rebated frame and cylinder, Navy grips, and a Navy barrel bored out to .44. It still has the .36 size loading lever, but it should load the .454 balls OK. The silver plated trigger guard and backstrap add some "western flair" to the gun, and it makes a good companion to the "Civilian" .36 Navy by the same maker. I have both, and they make a neat "set" and could possibly be "packed" together in the field, maybe the .36 for small game and the .44 for other stuff."

Good quality gun, May 24, 2008
By wingmaster05 from Eureka, MO

"I recently bought one, and I was pleased with the quality and accuracy. .451 round balls are the best diameter to use, and can be counted on to group about 4 inches high at 25 yards and in a 3 or so inch grouping at that same distance.

Disassembly is difficult the first time because the gun is fairly tight. A brass punch is a must to get the barrel wedge out. Tapping on the end of the barrel with a mallet will loosen it up and make the wedge easier to drive out.

Pietta, the company that makes the gun, lists the max load for this pistol as something like 15 grains of FFFg powder, but this is well below what this pistol was designed to handle. 40 grains was the standard load in 1851, and it's certainly a safe load today. Recoil is mild, even with the heavy load.

NO FIVE STAR HERE, December 10, 2007
By JAYWALKER

"I bought this gun relying on Caleas name that it would be a good buy. Not one of the bolt notches works properly, two of
the screws (forward back strap and trigger spring were mangled from the factory and then patched up with blue)
. I will look elsewhere for replacement parts as I dont want the same thing again by going back to the factory.

A joy to shoot, November 2, 2007
By AI4KY from Hohenwald, TN

"I have owned several hand guns which included cap & ball revolvers. The 1851 Navy Civilian .44 Cal is a fine weapon. It is made in Italy and very well made. The attention to detail is super. The weapon shoots a real tight group at 60 feet which came as a surprise. The material is all high grade and has a good feel. The "Starter Kit" falls well short of the weapon quality but is useable. I would recommend buying a high quality flask with the proper "load neck" and also the .451 ball seems to work the best for me.
Over all.... A great product for a good price.

BP pistols, April 9, 2007
By DCGunfighter from Dodge City, KS

"This is perhaps the finest piece of equipment that I have ever used in any of my re-enactment fights at Boot Hill in Dodge City. It is comparably one of the more beautiful pieces around, even at the same price range no less. I have also used it for practice shooting and it is an absolute blast. I've used from 25 to 40 grains and it is a constant sure shot so long as I am. I am even considering buying a second one so as to carry 2 during the gunfights."

Great gun!, December 29, 2006
By Accountant from Sacramento, CA

"I purchased this piece after I first became acquanted with black powder shooting through my purchase of the brass frame version through Cabelas. I must say, this is a beautiful gun, and at 25 yards I shoot 5" groupings with 20-25 grains of powder. But I have shot it with 35 grains, at that charge it has a lot of back kick, but it still hit the target and it's always fun to shoot. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is getting into B&P shooting!"
