bg's are solid,August 24, 2009
By beachcrawlerfrom Richmond, VA
"this is a strong reel with easy parts and spool availability. they are my go to summer surf reel for flounder and blues. the drag is good for this price reel, however there is some backplay in the gears, but not enough to be a problem. they are easy to maintain and will last for a long time."

Great reel at great price,May 26, 2009
By Anonymousfrom San Diego, CA
"I still have their first generation BG series reels bought in Japan about 35+ years ago and it's still working very well! Although I don't bring it to my fishing trip anymore due to its age and not silent retrieve. (Well, there was no such thing as silent retrieved reel available at that time) Since the reel served me so well, I bought new BG30 and BG60. I could tell they are still very durable reels just like its ancestors. Of course, they got much smoother, lighter and nice looking. Well, I'm comparing basically brand new reel to 35+years old reel, but there are not too many reels that last long enough to do this kind of comparison."

Excellent Saltwater Reel,February 12, 2009
By FishingBob45from Long Island, New York
"I have four BG-60s and two BG-30s for a few years and never had a problem with them. I use them mainly fishing for stripers and blues off Long Island's North Fork, The Race, Plum Gut, and Montauk. They never let me down. I used to fish with Penn 7500s and 8500s. The Penns would bind up from the salt spray always at the wrong time, had not happened to the BGs. Never gave them any big maintenance, just washed them down with fresh water after every trip."

Proven work horse,November 14, 2008
By Guamboarhunterfrom Guam
"I have six of these reels, 2 BG15s, BG20, BG30, 2 BG90s. They are the toughest reels for the price. I had my BG 15 battle big barracudas and my BG 90s and surf rods battle sharks and still come out on top. I will used them for as long as Diawa makes them."

It works,October 21, 2008
By lenhawkfrom Virginia Beach, VA
"Let me tell you that I have had all of the high end reels, and I am not saying they are bad although I have had some of them rattle, grind and not work. I have two BG 15 reels and that is what I use all the time. Why ? THEY WORK !!! I have droped them in salt water, sand, mud and you name it They just keep going. I would not trade this reel for the most expensive one. Clean it and it will never let you down."

Great reel,May 17, 2008
By roiratfrom Marshall Islands
"I ordered this reel for light saltwater boat and pier fishing and it has been great. I live in the Marshall Islands, where corrosion is a huge issue, and this reel has held up incredibly well. I have tried similar penn and shimano reels and while they were more expensive, did not hold up nearly as well. I have this mounted on a 7' ugly stick and really like the combo."

Heavy Metal,April 22, 2008
By Cirolamofrom Belgrade, Serbia
"When I ordered this piece of machinery, a close friend of mine told me that I made a mistake. "It is too heavy and cumbersome", he said. Well, he has a point there, I will not argue that. On the other hand, this baby will last 100 years and it balances nicely on my heavy catfish rod. Daiwa, please don't stop making these."

Diawa Black Gold Spinning Reels,November 11, 2007
By gregwazzefrom Massachusetts, MA
"These are excellent reels for saltwater surf or boat fishing. They have very strong corrosion resistant parts that won't flex even under heavy loads. The parts are made of premium material that will last for a long time. If you want a reel that will perform perfectly every time out then this is the one for you. I highly recommend this product."

Not this one,June 13, 2007
By nordicprincefrom Lafayette, LA
"The body of this reel was defective and would not fit on my rod. Even iif it had, the reel felt awkward and heavy. I don't think it would have been comfortable to use, especially for wade-fishing in the surf, which is my preferred way of salt-water fishing."

An excellent time-proven spinning reel,March 29, 2007
By Marcelofrom Mato Grosso, Brazil
"I have been using the BG 30 and the BG 60 for more than 15 years in different environments (salt water, Brazilian and Paraguayan wetlands, Amazonic rivers, etc). They have never let me down. They do not use high-tech materials or have complicated engineering solutions. However they are reliable, rugged and easy to operate. Their maintenance requirements are very low.
The price-benefit relation is very good also.
I have just bought a BG 30 to give as gift to a friend."

A truly durable saltwater reel that performs,February 15, 2007
By Anonymousfrom Bradenton, FL
"I gave the Black Gold 5 stars because they do what they claim - perform well in saltwater over the long haul. I have 2 BG15's and use them for inshore fishing from a kayak and wading, so my reels get wet. The BG reels are rock solid, very corrosion resistant, and have simple, heavy duty parts. They are reasonably smooth, cast well, don't twist line, and work well with braided line. The drag works very well. To make it waterproof, buy a thin plumbing O-ring that just fits over the bottom of the drag knob. This doesn't interfere with the drag at all and keeps water out as well as any factory system. There's a reason Florida guides use these so much for their charter clients, who are very hard on equipment - the BG reels just keep on truckin'. Take reasonable care of a BG reel & you'll have it a very long time."
