"The price was right for what I got, the pontoon floated well. A big mistake are the intake valves to fill up the air chambers, they don't have the valve openings to take manual pumps and are hard to blow into. I did buy this to help support the Trout Unlimited program"

Fat guy in a belly boat, February 24, 2009
    By StoneyPointFlies from SE Missouri

"I'm a bigger fella; 6'3 280lb. I had been shopping for a float tube/pontoon that would accomodate my frame (without breaking the bank) when my girlfriend surprised me with this pontoon as a gift.

I just took it out a few days ago and was pleased with how it handled in the water. With decent fins, it is possible to pick up a fair amount of speed, and tracks decently. A bit hard to move forward, though, as your legs usually (depending how you adjust yourself)would be more in front of you rather than underneath you.)

The spreader (two pieces of PVC socketed together) bar that comes with the unit is pretty flimsy. You'd be better served by tossing this and going to a hardware store and spending a buck or two on a solid piece that wont fold under pressure. A good pontoon (at least functionally...I have on had it for about a month now...we'll see how it holds up)

I'd reccomend it, especially for the larger folks....

    Kennebec Pontoon, September 1, 2008
    By TheOlCoach from Wyoming

"This is the second Kennebec I have owned. The fabric holding the bladder behind the seat split due to exposure to the sun and use on the first one. I absolutely loved the first one. Two things regarding the newly purchased one: (1) they have done away with the stretch cords holding the apron. It is now held in place with a piece of velcro on each side of the apron. This allows the apron to sag excessively. (2) The valve on the bladder between the pontoons on the first Kennebec was made to stop the escape of air when filling. You would pinch it to allow air to enter. The valve on the new one lets your air right back out. Other than these two things, it is great - very stable in the water and easily maneuvered. I just wish they would have stayed with the way things were."

This is a top level tube, September 18, 2007
    By Tubefool from Westchester, NY

    "I really love this tube.
I have serious back problems; I am so comfortable sitting for five to six hours at a time in this completely adjustable and sturdy seat.
The large pontoons result in a completely stable vessel. In tube fishing, one is always advised to only go in calm weather. Well I have been out there with the wind blowing hard with the water kicking, and this tube didn’t lift a half-inch. In fact, I’m not sure I could flip if I tried with all of my effort. There is a rigid stabilizer bar across the front connecting the two pontoons, an excellent design.
This tube has a lot of pockets; the two larger pontoon pockets each hold three Plano 3500 compartment boxes; that's a lot of lures. And there are another twelve pockets.
A popular review of this tube gave it very high grades but had three complaints. First, it commented on an error in design that did not allow the back flotation bladder to be inserted into the lower half of the rear large compartment, but actually took up the entire rear. This is simply not true. One has to follow the directions and insert this bladder in the lower half ‘prior’ to the inflation of the side pontoons; it works just like the instructions say. Second, there is a complaint that this rear bladder has an ‘inferior’ valve. I guess I would have preferred the same valve as the pontoons, but this valve is certainly of superior quality and there is no question of leakage. Finally, the striping apron is not taut. I have this complaint about the tube as well, but it was really easy to glue on a couple of strips of velcro and make it quite tight.
This is well-made product for a very reasonable price; as someone commented to me: “I have a vest that costs more than that.” I certainly did not experience any problems with seams, as mentioned by another reviewer in this catalog.
One last comment about the company. When a fish slammed the lure directly into my pontoon, is caused a pinhole leak (now I know better to not permit this.) In the 25 minutes it took me to get to my dock, the loss of air was absolutely negligible. But I thought I might want to purchase an extra pontoon bladder, just to keep on hand. Despite this damage being my fault, the company asked when I bought it, and since it was under warranty sent me all three bladders, brand new, without even asking a dime for shipping. That makes this company top-notch in my book.

    Love it!!!, July 27, 2007
    By IamTubin from SW OHIO

"I have used this tube for 3 seasons now and it has preformed flawlessly since day one. The tubes stay lined up fairly well, have never had a problem with rain water in the pockets and all valves still hold tight. Getting in or out of the water is a breeze and if you are worried about getting a little wet you might want to consider buying a pair of chest waders, as you will be sitting in the water. I find that the tube fits in all but the smallest backpacks along with an air pump and is easily set up lakeside for those longer hikes to your favorite honey hole."

Great Float Tube, July 15, 2007
    By mgilbo from Syracuse, NY

"I just bought one today and took it out on the lake. It was windy and it went through the wind like nothing. Material is very well made and it has to be since I'm 280lbs and my brother is 270lbs. Pockets are great with no lack of room. The only thing I wish was a little better was the net in front of you after you sit down. It needs to be a little smaller to make it tight. Other than that, lots of fun, great fishing and I highly recommend this to anyone. Oh.. its bigger than it looks in the picture here so be ready when you open it. Also, get good flippers. I bought a pair for $39 which worked well but I might splurge for a more comfy pair. Read the directions and make sure you line up the tubes.. Simple... just follow the drawing.

I'd give this a five but nothing is ever a five is it??

Kennebec Pontoon Float Tube, May 30, 2007
    By Carpetbroker from Sedro Woolley,WA

"I am suprised at the reviews of the Kennebec. I purchased two
of them and have had one for 5 years. Pockets galore, stable
and comfortable. I fish high lakes in the Cascade range where
it is impossible to have a day without a strong wind. The Kennebec is easy to combat wind that is producing white waves. I have never had an issue with zippers or water in the
pockets. Believe me at 2000 feet in western Washington it rains! Over the years I have drug across and hit numerous dead heads with no damage. With respect to other fishermen
and ladies,a tube with a V-hull or one where you ride high is
useless in our area. I highly recommend the Kennebec.

Kennebunk Float Tube, November 20, 2006
    By pirateslair from Ventura, CA

"I like this tube however it didn't come with the spreader bar that keeps it stiff. It does flex a little more than I like but the packability for storage more than outweighs this. I do find that the amount of inflation points and where they are hidden is a little ridiculous. more color combos would have been nice too. Good buy."

TU Kennebec Pontoon, November 20, 2006
    By wlnm

"On the plus side, this device is roomy with lots of pocket space. I had durability problems however, that leave a distaste for this pontoon. On arrival and first use, one bladder did not hold air and new bladders were sent out thanks to Cabelas. Then one of the valves stripped with normal use and was not trustworthy. Then the pocket for the front bar gradually ripped rendering the pontoon unuseable after moderate, normal use. The device was returned to Cabelas and I`m thankful that it was replaced to my satisfaction."

Positives and negatives, but more negatives..., November 14, 2006
By Starman77 from Kent, WA (near Seattle)

"I've owned several round float tubes and the Outcast Fish Cat float tube (which is more of a U-tube), so I feel like I can speak to the positives and negatives of this Kennebec float tube. On the positive side, the Kennebec has lots and lots of pockets, more than any other float tube I've owned. It is also lightweight due to the type of bladders used. It is relatively easy to get into and out of on the lake shore, especially as compared to the round float tubes. The low profile makes it less susceptible to being pushed around by the wind. On the negative side, it does not have convenient D-rings on the underside to allow for the attachment of backpacking straps. The D-rings on the top side are not placed conveniently for backpacking. The Kennebec inflates and deflates quicker than a float tube with a truck innertube, but not as quickly as the Outcast Fish Cat. I was also disappointed to find that I sit in about an inch or two of water instead of above the water. I am looking for an inflatable cushion to sit on to get my bottom above the water. After deflating, you have to be careful to when re-inflating to make sure that the bladders are aligned properly so that the valves are seated correctly; for some reason they seem to get out of alignment easily, especially as compared to the Outcast Fish Cat. Another negative is that the zippered pockets are not waterproof or water resistant; when you encounter pouring rain, the stuff inside the pockets will get wet. The Velcro rod holders on the sides of the pontoon do not appear to be strong enough for me to trust them with an expensive fly rod. A problem with both the Kennebec and the Outcast Fish Cat is that you have an apron that sags, whereas with the round float tubes I've owned the apron is rather taut, which I prefer. The Kennebec apron is attached by Velcro strips to the interior sides of the pockets and is easily dislodged, even with the weight of a large trout. Overall, I would recommend the Outcast Fish Cat (or similar Outcast float tubes) over the Kennebec, but I didn't dislike the Kennebec so much that I felt like going through the trouble of sending it back. It is better than a round float tube, and compared to other U-boats that I've tried, I think it is better than the lower cost U-boats in quality of construction and stability. The Kennebec has some positives, but many negatives and I would not buy it again."
