"I have a hard time with backing that looks like you should be knitting baby bootiies with it. This resembles braided line. The backing is highly visible and with three spoolsI filled 5 fly reelsproperly and had plenty of room left for good wt. wd. line from 3 wt. to 6 wt. forward line. Do not skimp on line."

"I have used Cortland backing (and line) for around 30 years now. My son is just getting into the fly fishing game and the other day he landed a large trout in a pond, even though he did not have backing on his (my old) reel. I can remember losing many fish when I was young and I didn't want him losing a gnarly river fish because he didn't have backing. The day he landed his fish, I ordered the backing. I have never had a problem with the product in my fishing career, and I have had countless Bow river fish go into the backing! That is the reason I chose this backing for my son. I want something that works, period."

"Cortland fly line backing is the only backing I will use. It is easy to put on the reel and it is strong. I tried the other brands and they are not the same. Cortland backing stays tight on the reel and dries fast. And besides, it is made in the USA a very important factor!"

Great for "RIO" loop knot - great backing!,

"The main reason I use Courtland is that it is very easy to tie into the "RIO" loop knot. This is the knot recommended by RIO in their fly line insert whereby you thread (pull) the line inside of itself using a thin wire making a very strong exceptionally smooth loop. Courtland backing also performs well, i.e. no twisting or digging into itself. I have been using 20lb Courtland on my 8wt reels for bonefishing for 4 years with no problems. The lighter weight increases my yardage and performs just fine, even with a double digit bone screaming across the flats."

"This is the standard backing, but if you need extra backing there is the Micronite version from the same manufacturer. For instance, you can get 100 yards of 20# Micron fly backing or 150 yards of 20# Micronite backing in the same space."

"I have used this Cortland Micron backing forever ....!! There exists no better fly line/reel backing compared to this. You will need 20 pound test for trout and the 30 pound test for heavier fish or whatever else that Cortland is offering. This backing can stay on a fly reel for literally DECADES wihout mildewing or rotting. This is a minor but important investment. If you ever have a LARGE trout run out all your fly line and "get into your backing" you had best PRAY that you have Cortland's Micron backing loaded to your fly reel :-O)"
