"At first glance these shoes look expensive but once you get them and check the quality, they are worth every cent. Lite, not too bulky, and with the required bindings-easy to put on. As I said, well worth the money and arent noisy like the modern shoes."

Nice to look at,

"I had a pair of bear claws that were given to me by my father. I wore them for 2 or 3 seasons and then gave them to a relative as a gift. They were functional and seemed to hold up well. I don't know for sure if these were Cabelas’ brand... My wife then purchased the Alaskans for me from Cabelas as I missed having an "Authentic" shoe and they now hang on the wall as decor. The one thing I do not like is that the tip and toes have a heavy gauge "fishing line" holding the leather strapping to the wood... I am not sure of the reasoning/functionality of this but in my opinion it detracts from the authentic look of the shoes. This can only be seen under close scrutiny. The shoe also has a metal Cabelas plate on the center of the shoe. You can take it or leave it... it is really up to the user whether they like the product being branded. I would rather have the artist sign the shoes. The bindings looked like plastic and were not pleasing to the eye. I would rather purchase a leather pair and soak them for a time to give them a warn look for display. If buying to display don't buy the bindings. PS my shoes have never seen the snow."

Best for floating, Bad durability,
January 12, 2009
By alpinepika

"I grew up on a pair of Alaska II's that my dad bought from an old trapper in South Central, CO in the 70's. There is not a better snowshoe for the deep powder of the Grand Mesa in Colorado. I am 6'4 and weigh 210lbs, so I need big snowshoes. I walked circles around my friends who were all sinking with their newer, high-tec designs. Last year, after 15 years of use, my dad wanted his old snowshoes back. So, I bought my own set of Alaska II's and they worked outstanding for 2 outtings. Then they started to stink like a dead animal. The varnish had wore off the rawhide and loosened the whole snowshoe. I returned that pair hoping is was a flaw, but the next pair had the same issue. If you hope to hang them over a mantel and use them only if you get stuck then they will be outstanding. I snowshoe around 50 miles per winter and cannot put up with a pair that can't stand to be used."

"I have always borrowed or rented snowshoes so I was excited to finally get my own pair. I looked around and researched for a few months before choosing my Cabela Hurons. I have been very pleased with everything about them and would highly recommend them to anyone! I was worried about getting bindings that I liked - I'd tried a few different types on my borrowed shoes so I had some definite opinions on what I wanted - namely easy off and on without having to do a lot of adjusting while I was walking. I also wanted them to stay on my heel without slipping. The recommended Cabela bindings have not disappointed. Make sure you wear a large sole boot so your foot doesn't slip forward in the binding as you are walking and you should be very happy with these! Thanks for making such a fine quality product!"

Canadian Shoes -,

"I have an original pair of Tubbs snowshoes so my expectations were quite high. Overall these are very good. I was very disappointed to find a piece of plastic line holding the interior webbing. Time will tell if that will hold up to actual use. Using staples to hold the tails together I thought was very cheap. The webbing holes around the perimeter should have been sanded and the burrs removed before stringing. I expect them to work as well as my 50 year old Tubbs and for the price they are hard to beat."

snowshoe review,
February 27, 2008
By mushwalker

"I have always liked the pickerel style snowshoe my dad used because they are easy to walk in. The Alaskan shoe exibits the same good and easy walk, since the shoes are narrow unlike the bearpaw. I also like shoes with a tail, it keeps the shoe good and straight when walking in all types of snow. The quality of the wooden canadian shoe is excellent. After using a pair of aluminum and vinyl snow shoes, i could not wait for my order to come in. I do not like the sound of aluminum on hard snow. I also thought that the design was improved by using nylon line in lieu of hide to hold the interior wbbing tought."

"I got the bear paw style. The bindings slip and slide when you first use them, but after you play with them a while you find that they will fit even the biggest pac boot. The shoes worked fine in four foot powder. Going up and down hills was no problem. Just make sure you set you feet far enough forward in the bindings so you dig your toes in if you have to."

"Cabela's Snowshoes are excellent. Last year my friend & I went scouting on snowshoes. he had traditional type bear paw and, I had the LL----, made with aluminum frames.(VERY LOUD) they worked well but VERY LOUD. Well I got rid of the other pair and purchased from Cabela's the traditional bear paw. Great look, easy maintenance, Light weight and, Very Very Quiet (Haaa Haaa Haaa Haaa for Wabbits) Yet Beefy enough to keep my 235 LB. back end up on top of the Drift. I did think the snowshoe bindings were a little narrow and, somewhat tough to tie on due to the die cut rubber straps all the same size & the snoeshoes being Handmade ( every one is different in the webbing) but once ya have it tied on it works just fine. Thanks Cabela's"

Canadian Snowshoes,
December 18, 2007
By Twoj

"I have a pair of Alaskan II's & a pair of Bear Paw’s. I used my Bear Paw’s last weekend bowhunting in northern Michigan. They are great for deep powder and packed snow alike. They really let me get into some dense brush where a longer shoe would be a hindrance. I use my Alaskan II’s when I have to really cover some distance in open areas. These are good even in really deep snow. This is my choice for our annual winter camping trip. The unplowed road to the campsite can have up to a 36” snow base. These will eat up the two-mile hike like nothing! I have had the Alaskans for over 15 years and the Bear Paws for a few. These snowshoes can take the abuse and beating they will get. Put a coat of varnish on them ever few years and they will last a lifetime. In the off-season they decorate my family room wall. I may add a pair of Huron’s too! I love them!"
