No Comparison To Wooden Maurilio #8:, June 20, 2008

"I spend about 50 days a year hunting ducks (mostly Pintails & Teal) in California, and have been doing so for approximately 50 years. For the last 20 years I have used the original wooden version from Brazil, called the Maurilio #8 (Small-billed Tinamou Whistle).
This Fall, the Maurilio broke, while I was retrieving a crippled Honker. I decided to give the Morwhistle a try, and purchased one.
The flat tone, generated by this plastic imitation, gives the call a dull, irritating, non-Pintail sounding flutter. I found that the wary, late season, birds, steered clear of the area when the call was used, and also the call froze up in 28 degree weather, which really gave it a strange sound (wood does not freeze).
I hope Cabelas will go back to carrying the wooden Maurilio like they did many years ago!
The Brazilian calls are hand made, hand tuned, and are actually considered a musical instrument, in other parts of the world. They are well worth the $4.00 more in price!

"I used this call during the 07-08 season and it did well for me. Although the colder it got the more it would hang up because of the condensation freezing in it, but on the mild days it worked perfectly.

Tough to do a mallard drake, September 17, 2007

"I like the whistle, but it doesn't reproduce the mallard drake very well as per its instructions. The directions say to cover both side holes, and this produces a very low whistling sound. Too much whistle, not enough buzz. By playing with it, you can figure out how to make a better drake whistling sound. The other whistles work very well. Haven't used it hunting yet."

"My hunting partner had one of these and it seemed to work okay. I ended up buying one and after learning how to use it right it started bringing in the sprig like no other. It works great, I tell everyone to get one. Hunting in California means a lot of sprig so get one of these and you'll get them for sure. I killed a sprig the last six times I hunted cause of this call."

Morwhistle Not Mallard Friendly, November 21, 2006

"This whistle is effective for some of the calls, i.e pintail, wood duck, etc. Not an effective result or sound with Mallards as manufacturer states. Since it's a whistle it can't be returned so you are stuck with it. Better to shop around if Mallard's are your choice."
