Owned the .54 cal for 20 years now - very reliable,October 11, 2009
By ChiefJfrom Texas
"I purchased the .54 cal with starter kit 20 years ago and was surprised it is still sold and hasn't changed...that's a good thing because you don't change something that works as advertised. Of course I ordered mine from a catalog and spoke first to a Cabela's firearms rep at their store for more info as there was no internet back then ;-)
I have killed multiple deer with my .54 cal and it is consistent year to year. I use the .435 grain Buffalo bullet round nose (no patch required) and the .425 grain Buffalo hollow point. I didn't see any Buffalo's on my last visit to Cabela's so purchased the conical shaped .430's. Maybe the Buffalo's aren't made anymore? Anyway, I stocked up on Buffalo's way back then so haven't needed any until now.
I vary my powder from 70 to 90 grains depending on the weight of the bullet and distance I'll be shooting -which all depends on terrain and where I will set up to shoot a deer. It all takes practice at a firing range so do yourself a favor, the easiest to load and shoot are the pre-lubed bullets - no patch required bullets.
I use the pre-lubed / no lube patch required style bullet in a quick load device which allows for a fast reload in the field if you need that fast second shot.
The quick reloader (not included with your starter kit - I got it aftermarket) is plastic with a plunger that holds just one bullet on one end for quick starting the bullet down your barrel. On the other end it has a 'well' that holds enough powder for one shot as well as a 'socket' that holds one percussion cap for easy placement directly onto the nipple of your gun. In less than one minute, I'm shooting a second round as I carry my quick loader in my front pocket for fast retrieval! (not that you'll miss but you do want to reload before you approach your shot game)
Also, go ahead and get the gun with the starter kit. Additionally, You will definitely want to get a 'Possibles' bag to haul all your stuff in to the range and to hunt so that it is organized and in one place. Fill your powder flask that comes with your starter kit before you leave home (from the 1lb. of Pyrodex FFG you'll purchase as well). The flask offers enough shots to begin practicing. You'll need a small funnel to get the powder into the flask. Don't forget to take a quick cleaning lubricant kit for the range as ballistics are affected with each subsequent shot made due to the fouling of black powder in the barrel.
If you want to be more of a traditionalist, shoot the balls with wadding.
My gun needed the front sight tapped a bit to the left to center it on target and I haven't touched it in 20 years since. Each and every year I am dead on at 100 yards so consequently, I don't have to do a lot of shooting each year.
The 'bright work' or brass trim on the gun can be a detractor when hunting as sun will reflect off of it. I bought some camo cloth tape, covered all the brass and trimmed the excess off with a razor sharp box blade. That's been on there for 20 years as well.
As for folks complaining about instructions I didn't know where to start either so I called and spoke to a very knowledgeable Cabela's sales rep. He talked me through everything and even offered for me to call him later if I had more questions. Can't get better than that! Also, at firing ranges there is almost certainly other black powder enthusiasts just before season so it is easy to compare notes and ask questions. I'm more of a see one, do one sort of person so that works well for me.
There are black powder clubs to use as a source to get started too. Honestly though, this is NOT rocket science and you can use search engines to find any imaginable answer.
I have made several spectacular shots with my .54 if I do say so myself. When that big hunk of lead hits your target, you know it! It's a "Snap - KaBoom - SLAP" sequence then fan the smoke from in front of your face to see your shot!
I am amazed how much the price has risen since I purchased mine. This is a solid investment and IMHO, a heckuva lot more fun to shooting modern in-line's that by a mere technicality, are still considered muzzle loaders. This is a step back in time so enjoy it. The only way you can be more of a traditionalist is to get the flintlock vs. percussion.
Good luck!

Cabela's Hawken,April 12, 2009
By chas09from Magnolia, Texas (Northwest side of Houston)
"Mainly purchased the rifle as a display item. May shoot it occasionally in the future, but may be awhile. Looked nice and will display well, which was the main purpose. Thought that the instruction manual was lacking, but it was still easy to put together without instructions. The package could use a better instruction manual. Purchased the rifle with the starter kit. It had no instructions at all. How is a person to know what measure of powder to be used in the rifle, especially to be safe while learning the specs of this particular rifle? This type of information is, therefore, needed to be acquired from individual study of other sources."

Muzzle loader rifle with starter kit,August 25, 2008

"I purchased this online and received everything in less than a week. I have since used the gun a couple of times and it has worked just fine. I did have to adjust the sights a bit but other than that I'm very pleased."

Review 5 for Cabela's Traditional Hawken Percussion Rifle with Starter Kit - Right Hand
"I have owned several black powder guns from several makers. The Cabela Hawken is a rifle anyone would be proud to own. At 100 yards I keep all shots in a 3 inch ring using standard .490 lead balls, #11 caps and 70 grains of FFFG powder. I make my own "lube patch" by soaking a 1 1/4" round cloth patch in a 1 to 1 mix of tallow and "bore butter" this seems to work well for me. The rifle is quality and looks great. The "starter kit" that comes with the rifle is also quality unlike the starter kit that comes with the pistols. I could write 20 pages and still not explain the pleasure and pride I have in this rifle. Again let me say the starter kit is also quality. I repeat this because the starter kit that comes with the pistols lacks quality and might prevent some people from buying the starter kit with the Hawken. Spend the extra dollars on the kit, it's well worth the price. If you can shoot one before you buy take the time to do so, you will be spoiled. Thanks to Cabela for a great product."

"I am very proud of my purchase. I love the look and feel of the rifle. It makes me feel like I'm in the old days. I sighted it in at 100 yards with 425 gr maxi balls. Six shots in a 3 inch group. I can't wait to see what it does for deer season in a couple of weeks."

fun range gun with occasional whitetail,January 4, 2007
By redneck44from Mason City, IA
"This is what I consider a mantel gun, you keep it nice and hang it above the mantel, taking it out to the range or even on the occasional hunt. This is the gun that I got started into the world of muzzleloading on and even shot my first black powder whitetail with it. But the reason I say it is a mantel gun though is because although I really, really enjoy taking it out on the range, it doesn't quite perform to the extent that I would like. My major problem with it is the range, it is incredably accurate to about 75 yards, grouping about a 2-3 inch bullseye with iron sights, past that it looses it's grouping to about a 8-9 inch group at about 100 yards with/without a scope, and having tried various powder and sabot combinations. So personally I would say that if you are looking for a fun shorter range gun then definetally get this gun it's a blast!! but if you are looking for long ranges with tight groups, get an in-line, or do what I did and get both and have the best of both worlds!!"

great product,December 27, 2006
By Anonymousfrom monroeville indiana
"my dad bought one used from a guy he knew. he paid 125 slightly used but it has a nice bushenell scope. he just bought me one new for christmas, and it looks and shoots great. i got it dialed in for 100 yards. i would never buy an in-line for they take away the tradional look to the way a muzzleloader should look. i just cant wait to take it out next season!!"

"This rife was very accurate at 100 yards. The rifle does not "kick" hard. I found some trouble with the front sight moving around. Some times if you dont put the cap on good enough you will "get the powder taste". I used 350 grain slugs and 100 grains of black powder and had very great sucsess. DO NOT USE PYRODEX POWDER PELLETS!!! ONLY BLACK POWDER. Every thing on this rifle is I thought to be high quality, nice stock, sweet octagon barrel, accurate shooter."
