"The carbine is very well made and shoots great the only thing I see that is a (neg) are the rear sight and the ramrod.Other than that its well worth the money in every way."

Love This Rifle, July 20, 2009
By MarineDeuce from Saint Johns, Arizona

"Ordered the Hawken Carbine over the phone - arrived three days later. Beautiful fit and finish out of the box. Excellent two stage trigger with about one pound let off. Fired five CCI magnum caps to check function - all went without incident. Loaded Hornady 240 grain sabot with 70 grains Triple Seven and got 1600 fps on the chrono. Excellent accuracy out of this rifle to 200 yards with saboted rounds - thats the extent of my range. Did try a triple seven pellet and got a fail to ignite. Some powder in the flash hole under the nipple got it to go but will forego the pellets since the FF triple seven seems to work great. Very easy clean up also - just water and patches and some WD to clear the water away. Only gripe is that cheesy rear sight assembly - will have to replace that, but still. . . Great buy for the money - lovely to look at and even more fun to shoot. This one is a Home Run Cabela's!!"

.54 cal. Hawken Carbine, October 27, 2008
By DJ33 from Huntingtown, Md.

"I like the short barrel, light weight. I installed Williams sights. The Carbine shoots great with .54 cal. Maxiballs & 100 grains of 2f black powder. At 50 yds it went thru 12" of wood. Looking forward to deer season."

great platform to build on, July 19, 2008
By WVBuckshot from west virginia

"I have been using the .54 cal carbine for a couple years now. I've heard the rear sight stories, but i've never used the original sights. My 55 year old eyes need all the help they can get. The Williams fire sights are the berries for this little gem. I also had my doubts with the quick twist that it would shoot the 425 gr. hornady great plains bullet I'm so fond of. But to my relief, with 100-105 gr. of loose 777, I could not ask for better accuracy. The heavy Cabela's sabots work really well, too. Perfect timber and brush gun here in West Virginia where I live. Make yourself a good solid ramrod. 777 in the chrome bore makes for super easy clean-up and multiple shots are a breeze. I pick it up to hunt with over my Lyman's and my Pedersoli every time. In 30+ years of blackpowder, Ive not enjoyed a rifle more."

Pleasant surprise, November 25, 2007
By OldBob from NY-North of the Fingerlakes

"This is a very accurate and reliable, but specialized rifle with a few niggling problems. My .50 shoots the 240Gr. XTP bullets in green Hornady sabots with amazing accuracy and consistency. Other sabot combinations and conicals, not so well.

As to the problems:
1)Ramrod too loose, slides out of gun--fixed with some velcro in the ramrod channel
2)frequent misfires--fixed by lightly sanding the cap seating area on the nipple so that caps could fully seat
3)Rear sight elevation screw turns way too easy, accidental changes easy to make--put witness mark on rear sight screw.

The short barrel length makes this gun a joy to carry and use in blinds. Got mine when they were a lot cheaper. They seem kind of pricey now. Still, I'd like to try a .54

Hawken Hunter Carbine, May 9, 2007
By doetaker from WA

"Rifle fit and finish is nice, wood is beautiful, and double trigger action is good and tight. Some minor assembly is necessary to join the barrel to the stock and the first rifle Cabelas sent was defective and would not fit together. They replaced it with a good item in short order. One major flaw of this otherwise high-quality rifle is the cheap rear sight. There is no tension in the screw of the windage adjustment and it will go out of true with just a few shots; however, I have managed 4 groups with this rifle at 50 yards. I will need to replace the rear sight before elk season."

Sportized Hawkins Hunter Carbine, April 2, 2007
By LawfulLarry from Hayes, Va.

"I was somewhat reluctant at first in buying a black powder gun through the mail. I was very suprised when the carbine came in. It was more then I could ask for. The workmanship was very good. Fit and finish is beautiful. When I took it to the range to sight in, it performed beyond my expectation.
I am totally happy and would recommend this fine black powder gun to any serious hunter or shooter.

Cabelas Hawkins carbine - sporterized, November 27, 2006
By threefletch

"I've been shooting this rifle for over six years. It has always been dependable and a good shooter. It's taken several deer at ranges between 10 yards to 100 yards - without any problems. Very good "brush gun" - easy to manuever with it when stocking deer."
