Not Very Good Knives,September 21, 2009
By NorCalFishermenfrom california
"as a licensed guide and outfitter, i spend alot of time in the field, and have used alot of different brands of knives. sometime back while perusing cabelas website, i noticed the Knives Of Alaska knives. i had wanted to get a nice set of knives for doing my field skinning and butchering for some time so i thought id pop and buy a set. the first set i ordered from cabelas came , and i opened them to find that while it was supposed to be a triple knife set, it only contained 2 knives, the bear cleaver and the cub. the middle sized knife was missing. i contacted cabelas, and they sent me a new set overnight, no questions asked. i ended up having to come back to my office to get them from UPS. when i opened them, i was thankful to find that all three knives were there. i removed them from the sheath, and found the smallest of the three was shaving sharp as Knives Of Alaska advertises, shaving sharp. the other two knives were as dull as a butter knife, and were not as easy to sharpen as advertised by Knives Of Alaska. i pulled out the paperwork that came with the knives, and in reading it, i found it to say "our edges are placed on by hand. there can be slight differences between knives, even wen they are the same style ,simply because one c raftsmen may sharpen a little differently than another.edge geometry varies between 22 and 25 degree angle..." . when i went to try to sharpen the knives, i found that the edge angles were WAY different than advertised. also, i noticed right away that these knives are CAST, not forged, ect. the two larger ones still had seam edges from the casting process that were very evident. also, while D2 tool steel does hold an edge for quite some time without sharpening, it is NOT as easy to sharpen as is advertised by Knives Of Alaska. i had to literally go and buy a $30 carbide sharpener to cut enough steel back on the edges to get them to sharpen up. it took me a good 6 hours of work to get the knives into a sharp half-usable condition, and they are still not as sharp as they should be (and i pride myself on my knife sharpening skills). even then, i used the bear cub knife as a steak knife in deer camp on a boneless ribeye steak, on doubled up chinette foam plates, and by the time i was done with dinner, it was also very dull. i can imagine if id have used it on an actual animal. one cut into hide or hair it would have been done. i generally dont give a bad review of a product, but in this case, i thought id make an exception as i cant see anyone paying almost $300 for a set of knives ( or alot more for the "stag" model set) that are in this kind of shape. i wouldnt have bought them either used or new for half that price if id have known they would have been in this shape and that they were a cast knife. i wont buy another one of there knives."

Great knife set.,September 6, 2009
By msaskinsfrom Robertsville, MO
"Knives arrived dull, but sharpened to a razor's edge and they stay sharp. I love using them even on small game. The cleaver cleanly takes a squirrel head off with one light chop, with or without the fur. They're heavy but perfectly balanced. I have the rubber handles and they won't slip out of your hand even when wet. Highly recommended."

No other to buy!!!,May 15, 2009
By squaler119from Kansas
"I just came back from a wild hog hunt on the Texas border. I have skinned and field dressed all kinds of game and all sizes. The guide that we used had the three knife set, wow was I surprised. What a set of knifes. When we were done hunting and he started cleaning the hogs I was amazed at how well these knives performed. He never had to stop and sharpen the knife during the process of all the hogs. For those of you that have ever skinned the rough hide on a hog, you will be amazed with that. What a set of knives."

Superb Quality,June 25, 2008
By FromColorado
"Born and raised hunting elk in Colorado, I've dressed lots of elk. These knives (3 knife combo) are of top quality with nearly no compare. Good grip with the rubber handles in the snow and blood. Blades stay very sharp, yet are difficult to sharpen when needed. Only complaint, the knives are VERY heavy. Too heavy to pack around in your daypack while hunting (in my opinion). They are also so heavy they cause quite a bit of forearm, wrist and hand fatigue while working with the bigger blades. I choose other knives for my "go to" field dressing knives."

knives of alaska triple combo,November 5, 2007
By Gonzo555from Colorado
"I recived this knife set 10 days before my planned elk hunting trip in the Colorado rockies. On first inspection the two smaller knives in the set where dull. the skinner cleaver was very sharp and in good shape. On closer inspection the knife with the gut hook had pits in the blade and a very large pit/defect in the gut hook. I would not recomend these kinves without first seeing them in person. Will not recomend to anyone."

Only the BEST!,August 28, 2007
By SBColoradofrom Parker, Colorado
"If you are looking for cheap knives these are not for you. One thing I think many people forget about when buying knives is the balance in your hand, size of the grip and the quality of the steel. These knives have all three. These are top quality and ready to go out of the box. Need to be careful putting them in the leather case or they will shread the leather in about two seconds. Be careful until you get used to sliding them in. I have large hands and they fit me like a glove. Easy to use on freezing days and wet conditions. (I got the rubber grips.) I'll never leave camp without them!"

The best i have ever had,April 7, 2007
By Bman84from Oregon
"although they are expencive, you will never need anyother knives for all your hunting and fishing needs!! I got the Triple Knife Combo and let me tell you they are great! The skinner has a large gut hook that works very well and makes fast work of any large game. The cleaver is big and strong and can be used for many different tasks. And the caping knife is also very usfull. last season, i was able to gut, skin, and bone out 5 cow elk before the blades needed to be resharpened!!! I will never need to buy new blades ever again, but if i do, you can bet that they will be Knives of Alaska."

Alaskan Knives,March 15, 2007
By BigJamfrom Ontario, Canada
"I own three of these knives and they are are the best of the best. I can split breast plates when others can't or won't even attempt to. You can use them to cut or chop and they keep going and stay sharp. The hardest bone I've came across yet is Rattlesnake and it still goes through it. My friend and taxidermist is going to get them know that he tried them on our last hunt. You can't go wrong with these knives, leave the rest at home!"

Only the best will do!,November 9, 2006
By drmartinfrom Salt Lake City, UT and Around the World
"After owning about a dozen (good) knives I decided to try the stag handled set. Well I can tell you that after a dozen or so deer and assorted other big game this will be the last set of knives that I will ever have to buy. These knives are a joy to use...they hold an edge and are designed (I guess by people that hunt for a living) for what they are intended to be used for. This set of knives is as beautiful as they are rugged...so if I can give anybody advise... BUY THEM!"

a big game field dressing must!,November 7, 2006
By Kareliantundrafrom Anchorage, Alaska
"I have dressed out over a hundred deer, antelope, elk, bear, and moose combined so I feel I know what tools work best for me and I want to tell you that the knives of Alaska triple combo set is a must for big game field dressing! First off the metal quality is very high and the edges stay sharp...my hunting partners even commented how sharp the blade stayed even after working on our third moose. They were constantly sharping their knives. Secondly the rubberized handles are easy to grip even when they have a lot of blood on them. The brown bear is heavy but well balanced, used as a cleaver it can easily chop thru a moose backbone. The finger hole also help during skinning. The light hunter is a functional gutting knife but I noticed on moose I have to make sure the fur doesn't get stuck on the gut hook or it binds up. It sure is good at skinning antelope, deer or elk, however, but I prefer the brown bear on moose and bear. I really like the cub bear...I use it to cape or for that delicate work where a small knife works best. However I have misplaced it several times so now I put it on a string around my neck. The leather shealth holds all the knives in place but it is a heavy set so I carry it in my back pack instead of on my belt."
