The best all around knife i've ever come acrossed!,
January 30, 2009
By hitchie10
from Whitetail Mecca, North Idaho
|
"This knife is a must have! Its small, fixed blade design is perrrrfect for gutting any animal. a big knife just gets in the way and is hard to manuever inside the animals body cavity. Very sharp and stays sharp. Gut and skin a whole deer or elk with out sharpening. The first real sharpening is tough... only because the knife edge has a 23 degree angle and most home sharpeners offer 20 and 25 degree angles. When it finally does go dull, try taking the factory edge off and use a 20 or 25 degree angle (suggest 25) for easier future sharpenings."

Cub Bear Knife,
January 7, 2009
By cactusbreath

"Used the knife on January 2nd 2009 to field dress and quarter a mule deer buck I got down in the desert of Arizona during the archery season. Did the whole job without ever touching up the blade! Went home, touched up the blade and processed the deer for the freezer. The knife is a great size and very comfortable to use."

Super Disappointment,
December 25, 2008
By Bowhunter61

"This is by far the worst caping knife I've ever owned. It was dull out of the box and is almost impossible to sharpen. I even took it to a professional to put an edge on it without success. Cabelas - you should consider using the D2 steel for this blade as you've done with the other Knives Of Alaska series knives. I own a KOA Alaskan Hunter and African Hunter with the D2 steel blades and they are the sharpest with the most long lasting edges imaginable. I've field dressed a half dozen deer with them and they are both still razor sharp - no touch up required. I expected the same performance out of the Cub Bear for caping but not even close to the same quality. Cabelas - change the blade to the D2 steel and this will be a fabulous little knife to own."

small knife, BIG buy,
December 10, 2008
By Phil42

"This is a cool and very usable knife. The rubber helps prevent slipping as well as the finger groove. I love to use it for skinning small game, especially fox that I send in for tanning. It also lets you get into the tight spots. It lays and feels good in my hand. My hunting buddy liked it so much, I had to get him one for his birthday. Bottom line: a good buy and quality for the price."

Could be better,

By flintcreek6412

"The size of the knife is absolutely perfect but the edge was very bad as it was not sharp at all. Look to spend some pre-field time getting it sharp. I also don't care for the sheath. It is large and clumsy in my opinion. I would prefer an open handle sheath. I expected better from this company."

Excellent little knife, great warranty,
October 3, 2008
By HamiltonCounty

"I have purchased a couple of knives of alaska and could not be happier with them, excellent working knives. this little caping knife came out of the box super sharp and I have actually only sharpened it once. I sharpened it before I put it up after last season. Caped out three little whitetail and cleaned a lot of birds with it, too, though I usually use game scissors. I read a few of the negative reviews and am somewhat surprised there were problems. All knives of alska knives are like craftsman tools. If they are messed up or don't perform you just send them back and they will replace them free. If I got a dull knife out of the box, that's what I would do. I will purchase another KOA knife this year to add to my collection."

Disappointment,

By Rob61

"I was very disappointed with the product from the very beginning. When I received the knife it required hours of sharpening and was difficult to sharpen. Six months after I purchased the knife I took it out of the case and it was heavly rusted. I used the knife for some skinning and it dulled quickly to my disappointment."

All an Elk or Deer hunter will need.,
January 19, 2008
By Gmoney303
from Centennial, CO
|
"This surprizing little knife was all I needed to field quarter a cow elk, with a little help from a gerber bone saw. Despite my sloppy work here and there getting into fur, the knife never lost its edge. When I bought the knife I was very skeptical, but I'm a Knives of Alaska fan for life now. I bought the caping knife before this last season, but was unable to test... maybe next year. Gmoney"

Perfect size,

By Randominator

"This knife is the perfect size to cape deer and to dress small game. It made quick work of a coyote hide. It is also one of the hardest knives to sharpen that I have ever had. I had to work with it several times before finally restoring the edge. I am wondering how long it will keep it's edge."

"The knive is of good quality but I was very dissapointed by the new sheath style. The old style seemed to have more detailing and molding of the leather to fit this specific knive. The new sheath has a large leather flap with a snap that does not look as nice."

"Great little knife. It holds an egde very well and you can tell it is well built. On the down side I have large hands and it is a little difficult to handle the knife when your hands are bloody. The sheath to the kinfe is well built, but, the knife is difficult get back into the sheath with one hand. Overall a very good knife, it would help if it was made just a little bit bigger."

"I Like the handle and the size of the knife however it was, by far, the dullest knife I have bever purchased. I had to put an edge on it myself. Although I do now like the knife I don't think I would purchase another from this maker."

NEW KNIFE,
July 16, 2007
By YOTECALER
from IDAHO, OREGON, ALASKA
|
"I bought this for caping this fall. I was lucky and got a Mountain Goat tag. I am getting ready for some skinning. The steel on the knife seems good. My complaint is that it was not sharp at all. It took most of the day to get it sharp and ready to hold and edge. I used a lansky system with the angle that the factory says they use. I had to reshape the edge completely. Although now that it is sharp it is holding and edge very well."
