Enjoyable shooting, October 26, 2009
By BaldMonkey from Iowa

"I've had this pistol for a month now and have really enjoyed the experience. Although ripping off a clip of 9mms is fun, there's a lot to be said for the black powder experience; kind of a zen like quality to it. The pistol itself is of fine craftsmanship and shoots well and accurate at shorter ranges. It did need a considerable amount of degreasing when it first arrived and I fouled powder on the first outing but after that it's been 100%. The nippples are a bit small for the #11 primers. I'll try the 10s when I can get them locally; Many have said they work better."

Bargain Firearm, October 12, 2009
By RebelWannabe from South Texas

"This is my first black powder gun. I haven't fired it yet, but even as a showpiece it is a bargain. It's gorgeous. The fit and finish is excellent. The action is crisp and positive. No loose parts, scratches, burnt powder - really, I've found nothing wrong with it! Now it may blow up in mind hand when I try to shoot it (ha!), but until then I will say this beauty is worth 5 stars. I very much look forward to shooting it. Thanks, Cabela's, for a quality product!"

1851 Confederate Navy Colt, October 7, 2009
By RRWC44 from Andreas, PA

"Overall it's a nice looking well balanced pistol. I've yet to fire it but am anxious to. For the price I'm very pleased. If you're thinking of buying one and never did black powder shooting... do your homework. There's a lot to learn but it's well worth it. Remember this isn't for Buffalo hunting it's for target shooting and short distance hunting. Don't over charge when loading. Use common sense and have fun."

Great gun, September 2, 2009
By 1OldCrow from Myersville, MD

"This is my first black powder pistol and I cant say enough good things about the gun. The gun looks great is accurate and balanced very well. I would recommend taking it apart and cleaning before I used it. Its test fired before they send it out and it makes life a lot easier if you clean it once before you use it. All in all I would say its a great gun and if your on the fence I say get one because this gun does not disappoint."

1851 Revolver, September 1, 2009

"The price is right. The appearance of the revolver was what was expected. I found the wedge difficult to remove which makes changing the cylinder time consuming."

1851 Navy Confederate .44 Cal with starter kit, August 24, 2009
By Roundman

"I bought the pistol by itself and also purchased the pistol
with the starter kit. I think the pistol is sound and worth the
price I paid for it. However, purchasing the pistol "with the
starter kit" is a losing proposition. The powder flask is genuine
plastic. The kit also includes a capper (if you own a muzzle
loader, you probably already have one and don't need
another), small handful of lead ball, a small handful of fiber
wads and a nipple wrench (as I recall). For the additional
money the starter kit is so NOT worth it. Buy the gun and
then get other items you need from Cabela's in bulk or from some other source.

boats and guns, August 21, 2009
By boatsandguns

"First purchase of a black power pistol. I use 20 grains of Pyrodex, .451 ball and #10 Remington caps. Seems to be right combination for me. At first, the gun shot slightly high and to the right at 60 feet. But after 84 rounds, it is right on. I don`t know if the gun breaks itself in after a few rounds or I`m getting more used to firing it.I think its the latter. Cleaning is slightly more work than a regular cartridge pistol, but I enjoy it. Get the starter kit if this is your first black powder pistol.I think I`ll upgrade to a better flask in the near future. This is a great buy for your first pistol, it`s a great buy for your second or third. The workmanship and finish on this pistol is outstanding.Buy it!"

44 fun, August 5, 2009
By phil23 from Ft Lupton, Co

"This is the first black powder pistol I have owned. I was a little apprehensive at first when after much pounding I could not get the barrel wedge out for an initial cleaning. I cleaned it the best I could and fired it anyway. The shooting session must have loosened it as was easier to remove to clean. The gun is very accurate as I was able to place several shots in a tight 2 inch group at 50 feet."

awsome, August 3, 2009
By samann from troutville, VA

"This gun is so fun to shoot and is great to clean it is very accurate out to 50 yards as this is my limit to range out but I am sure it would be accurate even further. Plus I like cleaning it with the old school hammer wedge it makes break down easy and cleaning very efficiant. the recomended powder load is 25 grains of pyrodex and my advice along with the gun makers is dont exceed that as a brass backstrap wouldnt take to much load but is very fun to shoot with 25 grains. An overall fun gun."

great, dependable pistol...beautiful appearance, July 14, 2009
By delawareshootin from greenwood, delaware

"I love shooting this pistol! I even like to just gaze upon it, it's beautiful! I ordered the holster and starter kit also. The holster is a top notch item and compliments the pistol well. The starter kit lacked enough ammunition and didn't include percussion caps. Overall, I think the pistol and holster are excellent products. The starter kit is less than to be desired though."

By wadka from North Central Alabama

"A beautiful piece ... shoots a little high, but adjusted and it will drill 1 hole in the center of the bull at 20 yards ... You might want to skip the starter kit, as the stuff that comes with it is better ordered seperatly ... the gun pushes, instead of kicks and it is a joy to shoot ... I will be buying another to go with the one I have !!! Good job Cabela's ..."

Sweet!, April 19, 2009
By PittsburghMike from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

"Recently bought the 1851 Navy Confed. model with starter kit. The starter kit has a little bit to be desired but will get you going with some balls and necessary tools like the nipple wrench and powder measure. The gun itself is really excellent. I am new to black powder but following some of the other comments on Cabelas I found the following to be correct: #10 remington caps work great, 451 ball loads and shoots fine in the pistol. The instructions with the gun say not to shoot more than 25 grains as it could damage the brass frame. I followed this instruction when loading loose powder. But I also tried Pyrodex pellets with the gun. They were so much easier to load than the black powder (I spilled more of the powder than I shot). The pellets worked and shot great, the only thing is that they are 30 grains which is a little more kick than recommended. the gun seemed to handle it fine though. Also, Ox Yoke seals in place of bore butter worked great and were much less messy. After about 50 rounds I needed to give the gun a quick field cleaning with an wipe, the gun will get very dirty and the cylinder will be very hard to turn. Cleaning really wasn't bad, just followed the directions, it takes more time than modern firearm, but that comes with the territory. Overall great value, great buy!"
