1851 Confederate Navy .44 Caliber Revolver, October 20, 2009
By Oafdawg from sandusky, OH

"Great price! Very nice revolver for Civil War re-enactors. Good fit and finish, well made. Locks up tight when cocked. I have the same gun made by FIE in the 70's that I have retired from shooting live ammo, only blank loads. My new one looks like it'll last as long or longer."

Excellent Starter BP Revolver, October 19, 2009
By MissouriRoughian from Missouri

"This is my second 1851 Confederate Navy replica by Cabela's/Pietta. While I prefer the steel frame of some of the other models for more durable use, this revolver is an affordable way to get started with BP revolvers. It reliably shoots tight groups and looks great too.

Once you buy this one - you'll be back for some of the other models as well. Don't say I didn't warn you. :-)

The best, September 21, 2009
By Franz30 from Colorado Springs, Colorado

"I call it the best because it is. From its Civil War origins to mondern day time it has been used from hunt, to self defense and even on the big screen. Legandary men such as Armstrong Custer, Wild Bill Hickock and even Clint Eastwood have used this gun in-so doing made the weapons as big as themselves. I myself have owned three and 2 other variations over the years. And thier power is finominal. I have personnally downed antelope passed 30 yards with a clean through shots with ther wonderful .44 stopping power. And it is a cowboy action shooters true love. Smooth as water and faster than lightning, it is a dream come true, the longer barrel giving it extreme accuracy and less of a kick. Thank you for continuing to carry such a wonderful item for us consumers so that we me experience a legend."

Great Pistol for the Price, August 24, 2009
By txapacheguy

"This pistol was consistent with the quality most folks expect from a Pietta reproduction. It is a little rough as far as the fit of some of the components, but a great piece for the money... I WILL purchase another one of these weapons when they go back on sale!!!"

1851 .44 cal. cap and ball, August 10, 2009
By PoolvilleTex from Texas

"The day I recived this pistol I shot about 60 rounds. Not only does this pistol shoot well, First 6 shots at 100 ft put 5 out of 6 into a paper plate. The gun does shoot high at 50 yards. Once you learn how low to place sights, it shoot very well. Was told gun was sighted in at 200 yrds. I have not shot that distance yet but look forward to trying. The gun feels good to hand and looks good to the eye. Small screw driver is needed to tighten screws, they get loose after 40 + rounds. Over all it is a Blast to shoot. The cap and balls + powder is very cheap to shoot. Takes a little bit of time to reload but that adds to the fun, shot from 12 grains to 25 grains of powder. Does not have much recoil at all."

Quite a deal, July 9, 2009
By Ziggy925 from Aspen, CO

"I just received this gun at regular price, so this sale price is a heck of a deal.

I've never shot a black powder revolver before and it was a lot of fun. I just followed the instructions in the manufacturers manual, and Cablelas experts anwered all my questions quickly.

It's definitely a slower pace type of shooting, and a great change of pace from shooting sem-autos and "normal" revolvers.

I also got the starter kit, which, except for powder and caps, will get you going quickly. I did find, however, that the capper that comes with the kit does not fit this gun very well. I think a little filing will do the trick, however.

Anyway, the gun appeared well made and is a great looking replica. Everybody at the range was impressed with it.

You should know that dissasembling this gun takes quite a wack with a screwdriver and a hammer. Open a vise to the width of the wedge, place a rag over the vise, then place the gun on the rag with wedge hanging down in the gap. Place a large screwdriver, or similar tool, on the wedge and give it a really good wack with a hammer. IF you don't have a vise a couple blocks of wood would probably help, but trying to put it between your knees doesn't really work.

Once the wedge is out a few good tugs will get it apart. Putting it back together is just the opposite, and again you will need a hammer to wack that wedge back into place. Just don't be timid or you'll be at it a long time.

Anyway, it is a lot of fun. My trip to the range was without incident, and contrary to what I had been told about black powder revolvers, I still have all my fingers and didn't have so much as one misfire.

5th BP purchase from Cabellas, July 9, 2009
By capandballshooter from Andalusia AL.

"This is the fith purchase from Cabelas in just over a month. The revolver arrived today. I was not as satisfied with this one as much as the others. This one had been shot more than just test fired and repackaged. It still had new appearence but had not been cleaned good. So I thought about sending it back but the fire arm works fine and has no scratches or any noticeable defects. So I will keep it. it did take about an hour to clean it up properly but all is well. The other 4 purchases I made this past month was the 1858 5 1/2' barrel 44, the 1858 Buffallo 44 and Two of the 1851 Wild Bill Hickok. You can read all my reviews under each listing. They all shoot very well I use pyrodex P, lubed wads and .454 rd. balls for the 44's and .375 rd. balls for the 36's 22 grains for the 44's and 15 grs. for the 36's. You can't go wrong with Cabelas and Their BP revolvers. Buy one and join the rest in the old west. Good luck good shootin and be safe. Capt.vic"

Exceeded My Expectations, June 23, 2009
By Anonymous from Layton, Ut

"My first black powder gun, and it exceed and far surpassed my expectations. I turned to black powder guns because the cost of regular cartridge rounds has skyrocketed. I can't believe how accurate this gun is even shooting round balls. I am able to consistently do 4 inch groupings at 25 yards. I do practice with it about once a week. The tolerances are better then on several of my modern firearms.

Bottom-line, I've very impressed.

"You can not go wrong with this gun. It is one of the best guns I have it shoots great and looks great. I live in a very remote place I can shoot right out the back door it is going to be hard to keep enough ball's , caps, and powder around. Soon as I save up enough cash I am going to buy my wife one. Pluss CABELA's is the best place to shop[ for black powder gun's the service was great."

Great for the money, May 1, 2009
By Anonymous from Reno, NV

"This gun is great for the money. I wouldn't use it heavily as a daily shooter, but for the beginner of for occasional outings this is great, and accuracy is very strong.

The only reason I would not call this a daily shooter, is that one has to be careful with the brass and the cleaning. I think this weapon looks great though! For an introduction to blackpowder this IS the weapon to start with. Once you get into then move to the Walker, the 1860 or 61, or others, and with steel, etc.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE!! DO NOT use CCI caps. They jam, they don't always go off, etc. I have seen some say the hammer is too weak, etc. No, it is the caps. One doesn't want a hammer to slam down like an anvil. But the CCI #10 caps are a bit too tall, and a bit too weak.

The Remington #10 caps are the way to go. They ignite very quickly every time and rarely jam, and if they do jam, just shake the gun slightly and falls right out.

Never use #11 caps.

Also, with the wonder wads Cabelas sells, and throw some bullet lub over top of the barrels for chamber fire protection, .451 round balls you are ready to go.

So throw down 28 grains of FFFG powder, Then your wonder wad. Then your .451 ball. Then add the grease on top. Then add your REMINGTON #10 caps (again, can I say it enough, NO CCI's!) and you are ready.

This gun can be accurate out to 75 yards no problem.

For the money, this thing is great.

New ???, April 20, 2009
By Mrdahut from NY

"I had to send mine back the first time it arrived. When I took it out of the box I was instantly unhappy as there where a few scratches on the brass and handle as well as a little dirt. When I looked further I noticed large amounts of carbon build up around the strike of the hammer and rust around the cylinder. I called Cabela's and arranged an immdiate return and shipped it out the next day. They turned everything around fairly fast . This was good since I needed the peice for a preformance. Sadly the replacement item was only a little bit better. NO scratches no rust still a fair amount of carbon around the hammer. I undestand the item is test fired before it is sent out but both items displayed alot more carbon then 6 shots worth.

On the other side of the coin I'm not the best shot with a pistol but it tended to go in the general direction I was aiming at. At 22grain charge the kick was negligable.
If it wasnt for the condition the I recieved them in I Would gladly recomend this Pistol to anyone else at the entry level.

An excellent revolver!, April 18, 2009
By DocDanV from Milwaukee, WI

"This was my second purchase from Cabelas, and I was just as pleased with this revolver as I was with the first. The quality of the piece was excellent; grips, fitting, finish were all well beyond what one would expect for the price. While I haven't fired the revolver as yet I would be willing to wager that, given the quality of this replica, it will be a fine shooter! I would definitely recommend it to anyone!"

"I bought the gun a few months ago and last weekend I finally got to shoot it. Very nice shooting gun! It is my first black powder revolver and I already have another ordered. I loaded 18 grains of Pyrodex, used #10 caps and .451 ball. Would buy another in the future."

Cheap price and a cheap gun., April 9, 2009
By macpaq from Colorado

"I have purchased two other black powder guns from Cabella's. They were both made by Pietta and were of great quality. Therefore, I had no qualms about trying this Confederate revolver. Two of the trigger guard screws and the grip screw fell out when shooting the gun. I could not put them back as the brass threads were already stripped. I had to use a tap and dye set to redo the threads before I could put the gun back together. Every other screw was loose, also. The gun suffered from hammer blowback which destroyed the timing of the cylinder. I was using Pyrodex P and loads were milder than what Cabella's recommended. This gun was poorly made. Brass is a poor substitute for the frame. It will stretch and lose its integrity soon if my gun was a representative example. I have sent the gun back and have ordered a different gun with a steel frame. The gun also shot at least twelve inches high at thirty feet! Spend a little more money and get a better quality gun."
