Customer Reviews for 1858 Buffalo Brass Frame .44 Caliber Revolver
"this thing is bad to the bone! at 75 ft the bullet went thru a 2 inch thick plywood target and into the ground 10 inches deep.i use a conical bullet .450 dia and weight 200 gr.(lee mold) 30 grain powder load. you will have to change out the nipples with the stainless steel ones sold at cabelas ;because the nipples that come with the gun have such a large hole, the powder in the gun blows the spent cap off and gets wedged in the revolver barrel every shot. i"m very very happy with it."

Great product service and price,July 28, 2009
By JET1234from Missoula Montana
"I sent the first one back because of the 7 cosmetic flaws and Cabales sent me another one that meet my standards. I hit the bullseye on the first shot from this amazing pistol. I had a group of one and one half inch on the first six rounds. I believe that you could not do better than getting one of these pistols. Its easy to clean and shines up very well with minimal effort. I check around on the price and found it was about $60.00 less expensive than anyone else when it was on sale. Thank you Cabelas for a great product."

I'm Impressed!,July 24, 2009
By txhunter77from San Antonio, TX
"I bought this revolver hoping to use the same 200gr-.452" bullet I use with my Walker 44, but was dissapointed to find that the diameter of the chambers are .445". I'm figuring that this was done so that there would be no way to convert this brass framed revolver to 45 colt, unlike the steel frame 58's. Other than that I have no complaints, in fact I am very impressed in how accurate this revolver turned out to be. The front site was alittle buggered up, but 15min. with a triangle file and she was good to go. Over all this revolver is well worth the price I paid.
I was thinking that I might try to hunt with it out to 20yds or so, but after seeing how accurate this thing really is I think that 50-60yds is perfectly reasonable."

1858 Buffalo Revolver,July 12, 2009
By NWCoastalSailorfrom Bellingham, WA
"This revolver is far more accurate then most other BP items available. Using muzzel rest, shooting 1" or less spreads at 25 yards with very minor adjustment to rear sight. Have fired well over 200 rounds through it in past month.
Two suggestions for ease of use of this gun. First, using a small amount of anti-sieze on rear of and frront 1" of the Cylinder Pin will make disassembly of gun for cleaning much easier. I stress a small amount so as not to be a source of fouling of the cylinder. Second, locate and buy either a small wood or plastic mallet or hammer so as to be able to remove the Cylinder Pin if it does foul. This will preserve the brass and steel of the frame and barrel.
I intend to purchase the Stainless Steel target version with the 8" barrel as the next addition to my collection. Note that there is now a 5 1/2 berrel Stainless now available as well. Well worth the asking price."

Good handling pistol,June 16, 2009
By Bamaforeverfrom Alabama
"This pistol is accurate and handles well for a long barrel. Shot 18 rounds through it already (had it two weeks) and it is a sturdy frame that makes sighting the target easier than the Dragoon style Colts (I have one of them too)."

sweet shooter,June 10, 2009

"This is the second revolver I have bought from Cabelas this month. The first one was the 1858 44 cal with 5 1/2" barrel. this one being the second. I was very impressed with the first as I am with this one. Out of the box it shot groups of 3 to 5" at 25yards. I find it difficult to get that kind of grouping with a factory load gun. Again you can't go wrong both quality and service Cabelas is the place for black powder arms and supplies. With this pistol I used 30 grains and .454 ball. good shooting. I will be buying the 8" 44 1858 next week."

1858 revolver,April 21, 2009
By bjs1958from Henryetta oklahoma
"Ireceived the revolver real quick along with spare cylinder .when i was cleaning spare cylinder one nipple would not go back in all the way, guess iwill have to see what cabelas replacement policy is . The gun shoots decent less than 20 yards for me but i am not as steady as i once was even with a rest.Afriend of mine was shooting it 80 plus yards shooting just right of the target. simple sight adjustment was needed .very cool gun it is definitely one of the funnest guns i have"

1858 Buffalo Pistol gets two thumbs up,April 18, 2009
By Ralphbffrom Woodland, California
""I purchased this pistol a few years ago, just as I was loosing intrest in black powder.
I pulled it out a few days ago, took it my rifle and my Grandson the the range.
If I remember right I used 35 grains of FFF Black Powder. I use an empty 45 auto case as a powder measure.
At 25 yards the first shot ever was a dead center bulls eye. The second shot was a half inch to the right.
We took turns and shot a half dozen rounds through it as the range was closeing.
All in all this is a real shooter. If I had it to do over again I may of purchased the steal framed version. It's a little more versatile.
I'm glad I made the purchase. The finish is very good and I'm very happy." Would you recommend this product to a friend? Yes"

1858 Buffalo .44,April 4, 2009
By Squareshooter2from WI
"A big hand gun but reasonable to handle. Fit and finish is V.Good. Accuracy, spot on after adj sights, 3-4" groups freehand @25 yds. 22gr pyrodex w/.454 round ball no patch or wad just powder and a snug ball with crisco over the top to prevent chainfire. You need to use brass cleaner to get the brass finish to shine again. Black powder is fun, I enjoy it as much or more than my centerfires, however, you need to allow more time because of the extra work involved."

44 cal 1858 buffalo,February 22, 2009

"I have used my pistol with many different loads and types of powder. I have found that you do need to keep it clean and use a good type of clean burning powder or it will destroy the mechinism that turns the cylinder. I have seen many complaints about regular #11 primers, and I found these #10 pistol primers that dont need crimped and stay on. they are tight and will NOT fall off. Most of my problems started with #11 falling off and getting cought in the action. This has been the funest gun I have to date, and I have many modern and old style replicas. Its cheep to shoot, and just a really fun pistol! Remember to get the #10 pistol primers for it!"

Accuracy Right out of the Box,January 11, 2009
By Baddgerrfrom Western NC
"Cabelas never disappoints me. Have had this weapon for nearly 4 years and it has never failed to perform. Recently went to the range with a buddy of mine shooting his S&W 44Mag. This gun delivered groups comparable to his and in my opinion is a lot more fun to shoot. Have to agree with a previous review a recommend pre-crimping the caps to ensure they stay on the nipple. Keep us shooting straight Cabelas"

I like it,December 23, 2008
By Buck37355from Manchester, TN
"It is very acurate, preforms well, and I would recommend that any hunter carry it as a side arm when muzzle loading. It is well constructed and looks nice. Fairly easy to clean, I enjoy target practicing with it. Would recommend it to any black powder hunter just to hunt with pistol. I feel they will be surprized at the performance of this firearm. I have deer hunted with just the pistol and am pleased with the performance. I have had many comments on the firearm from fellow hunters and am sure you would enjoyed it."

Addicted to Cap & Ball!,October 4, 2007
By Fainermoofrom Wyoming Wilderness
"My curriosity got the best of me and I decided to give C&B pistols a try. Never would I have imagined that after the first 6 rounds I would be addicted to this new found hobby! I bought this pistol back in 2001. The accuracy is outstanding! The recoil is pleasantly light to moderate. Loading is a breeze after I adjusted to the routine. I realy love this pistol! However, after about the 75th round the gizmo that turns the cylinder broke. I could not find the maker, or anyone, with replacement parts untill now; from Cabela's. I praise Italian guns but my best friend who's new to firearms was with me when this happened and this turned him off regarding Italian guns. Another commenter spoke of not using dirty powder and I see NOW that this was the cause of the problem! It wasn't so much the gun but me. I also learned that this and the problem with caps getting stuck under the cylinder is typical with the 1858. I'm thrilled to have ironed out the bugs, and thank you Cabela's for a very nice pistol."

performance/durability,May 31, 2007

"I concur with the other guys. My testimony can only add a few more hundreds of rounds. Since Jan '07 go to 800! No problemo! I powdered up to a full 50 gr of Triple 7! Still a very soft shot to the hand but went to an 8 inch group at 30 yds. Not bad! Huh? That's with rd ball , I guess they knuckle balled. But the 1858 stood up! I powder down to 28/30 gr for back yard coons, possums etc. I've had good success with 38/40 gr triple 7 @ 50 yds. That's if a 5 inch group works for you! --------- My ONLY! problem with this revolver is,,,,,,, standard #11 percussion caps (CCI) don't fit/stay on the nipples. I must pre-crimp them. ????"
