Sheepherders stove,November 18, 2008

"As I said in an email I sent after receiving the stove-it was not well molded. There were gaps in back molding. We could have bought a cheaper version and been just as well off. We had expected better from Cabela's"

got the job done,November 17, 2008
By DeerHunt321from MO
"The stove itself performed acceptably. I'm still looking for a better solution to tent heat. I would go with propane but don't like not having the fumes vented out the tent.
The biggest complaint is attachment of the first section of stove pipe to the stove. Sheet metal screws can be used to hold the pipe sections together but the hole in the top of stove is drawn down leaving little room for screws and forcing you to reach all the way into the stove to try and attach any. We used the Stove with the Big Horn III and when the wind kicked up the tent walls bouncing back and forth loosened the connection of the pipe to the stove. Some extra stakes and tie downs held the tent tight enough to prevent but could have been a disaster.
The stove did not stay warm as long as I would have liked. When loaded up with wood it burned for about 3 hrs before needing to add more. The dampner was a little annoying, we had to open all the way up when adding wood then once it is burning good turn it down then when wood burned partly need to open back up to get heat.
I used the stove for 3 days and when disassembled notice a surprising amount of build up in the flue pipe. I don't know if it is because we had to keep the temp low not to over heat stove or if my wood was a little wet but I wouldn't use for much longer than 2-3 days with out cleaning."

packaged stove pipe,February 20, 2008
By extendedcamperfrom Baltimore, MD
"I am rating this item because it had a problem. To avoid a waste of my time: the other items (tent, replacement stove pipe) including the stove itself, are fine - I give the stove itself an overall rating of fair because the telescoping stove pipe accompanying it came with a loose seam in the bottom piece, and the entire pipe fell apart within a week of use. This renders the stove itself unusable without buying replacement parts. I did that, and the non-telescoping pipe I bought is fine. I would say it is generous to rate an item as fair when it requires that a part be replaced to use it at all."

"Not sure of full heating capacity due to trouble with the damper shipped to be installed in the stack. Turns out disassembly and reassembly required of damper to install in pipe is a bit more difficult than it should be. Suggest damper is installed before shipment to customer."

Great product,January 20, 2008
By KansasFrankfrom Lenexa, Kansas
"I purchased the stove that was offered with the Bighorn II tent. I have read many reviews regarding these stoves and the pro and cons of them. For me the stove has been nothing but perfect. But read the instructions that come with it. I know what you're thinking, "Instructions for a wood stove?" Well in the instructions is states to burn the stove prior to using it in the tent for the first time. This will burn off all the oil used to protect it from rust while is storage. If you don't you will be treated with a bunch of black smoke in your tent. I set mine up in the back yard and fired it up for about 2 hours. It smoked badly for about 1 hour then it tapered off.
I have also read in other reviews, mainly for the Bighorn II tent that the chimney ring on the tent is melting. To prevent this it is very important to limit the amount of wood being burned. These stoves are great for warming up the tents but they cannot be used like an outdoor fire pit. If you limit the amount of wood, hence temperature, the stove pipes won't become cherry red and burn the ring.
One more tip that I have found useful is instead of using charcoal, pitch wood or regular wood, try using the Sterno Logs. They burn much longer than regular wood, and the ash breaks down to a fine powder so it's easier to empty the ash tray between logs. Obviously this is only good if you are doing drive up camping. The 3.5 lb logs burn consistantly for 2 hours and 20 minutes if the vent is left wide open, the 6 lb Logs burn for about 4 hours. They get plenty hot but not to hot to warp the stove or burn the tent ring."

Killin The Chill,November 8, 2007

"This stove works very good, but I would recommend a fire brick floor instead of the sand or dirt as they recommend. Tried sand and it gets wedged in the stove hems. Its easier to shovel ash and the brick makes for an easy camp break."

"You have to constantly have to feed the stove. Charcoal burns to fast and leaves alot of ash. Clean it out after every use. Never got to use coal but think it would last longer. Pitch wood is to hot for the stove pipe."

Alaskan Stove,November 6, 2007
By LSUhunterfrom Colorado
"I used the stove deer and elk hunting in the Colorado mountans las weekend. The stove works great. However, when ordering read all the print and descriptions. You buy the stove for x amount and it does NOT come with the chimney or anything else. I called back to order the chimney and everything else I needed to use the stove. I then received the chimney. It did not come with the flue or the spark arrester/hood for the top. So if you purchase the stove, know that you have to purchase the chimney and then the flue and the chimney hood separately. The cost adds up."

"Hot" Cook Shack,October 22, 2007
By Dooksterfrom Sandpoint Idaho
"I use my Sheephearder's Alaskan Stove in the cooking tent at elk camp. This wall tent is 14x17 and this lightweight stove is perfect for quick heating in the cold/early morning. The only negetive is that it does not hold a fire for more than a few hours. You can use this to pack-in anywhere as it is very light weight."

Camper Stove,May 22, 2007

"The stove works exactly as designed. I would highly recommend this product. Two time saving notes for those considering purchase would be to buy a model with a removable ash pan for cleaning and stick with 5 inch or greater stove pipe and accessories as anything smaller is difficult if not impossible to locate."

Forget something ?,November 29, 2006
By ejcolofrom Canon City, Colorado, retired
"Forgetting the large woodburning stove for the cookshack on my 14x29 Cabales outfitters canvas tent the small Cabales outfitter seeries tent stove was pressed into service. It filled or exceeded all expections. Would reccomend this piece of equipment for all tents up to this size. workmanship was extreemly good all seems tight . Door hinge woorked well and closed fit was tighter than expected. Well made product. Ed C."

Bigfox,November 14, 2006

"There were 2 different stoves in the Cabela's catalog, and the one we preferred was offered in a package with the big horn II tent, but the stove was on long-term backorder. So we ordered this stove. It is a plain-jane, non-folding tent stove, and it performed as expected. It didn't warp much from the heat, and it worked okay. The other model that we preferred has a separate ash compartment, ash "drawer" that we thought would work better, but we weren't able get it. This is an okay stove, but because it is non-folding, it is difficult to pack on a horse or mule."
