What A Cooler Ought To Be,September 10, 2009

"When I was a kid growing up on Lake Erie in the 1970's, it seemed that all the dads and grandpas had a red or green Coleman cooler. They filled their coolers with ice and sandwiches, loaded them on the boat, and headed out to fish at the crack of dawn. Later in the day they brought 'em back filled with walleye, perch - and plenty of ice leftover. No matter what was thrown at or into the old coolers, they did the job and lasted for decades, just like a true classic should.
Now that Coleman has finally reintroduced the steel-belted cooler, I just had to have one for myself (red). It's as sturdy as the day is long, and I love the new recessed drain channel. You can stuff it, sit on it, bounce it around, whatever, and it keeps coming back for more. It will hold ice for several days at high temperatures, but much of that depends on whether you leave it to bake in the sun or not. Either way, it soundly beats the plastic coolers I have used for years (Coleman and Igloo).
The only reason I gave 4/5 instead of 5/5 is because of the odd lid fit. While latched properly, the lid wobbles up and down a bit. I physically checked 15 of them in the store - all colors - and they were all the same. No leaks yet, so I'm assuming it was designed that way. All the latches, handles, rivets, etc. are sturdy.
While it's not quite as heavy-duty as it's predecessor (what is?), this is still a great, classic/vintage cooler for those of us who want a work-horse cooler (and a bit of nostalgia) that we can have in the family for years and years.

"I am not completely satisfied with the cooler. The latch does not stay closed. It says it keeps the ice longer which it does not. We live on the coast where the hotest temperature is only 70 at best and the ice melts in hours. I would not spend this money on this cooler again."

"Holds ice very well. I bought this for durability and ice retention. In just a couple of weeks the stainless steel is already showing signs of rust spots in a few places and it hasn't even been on the boat yet. So this is very disappointing."

"The cooler is very large. One day I added a 10 pound bag of ice and the ice from my icemaker. The cooler sat in the sun all day (approx. 60 degrees outside). The next day it was in the sun most of the day (approx. 80 degrees) and I still had ice that evening. I am very satisfied with this purchase."
