Be careful with color preservatives, December 4, 2007

"I have built rods before but I'm still a novice. I used the Gudebrod product undiluted on some dark green wraps and the wraps ended up with dark bands (I had not yet applied the epoxy rod finish). I called Gudebrod. They were very polite and suggested it was the thread (bad dye batch) so I tested the color preservative on three test wraps: the green used on the guides, another green from a different spool which was used successfully on an earlier rod, and a dark brown. The CP was applied undiluted and all three wraps ended up with dark bands which were 1 or 2 to 6 or 8 thread wraps wide. I purchased the CP last summer so it could not have frozen during shipment. If you use this or other CPs, apply some to a test wrap on your blank BEFORE using it on all the wraps. Cabela's rod finish is the best."
