Are there alternatives?,February 3, 2009

"I bought the Lyman 4500 about 3 weeks ago and got it together with the sizing dies primarily for .44 and 45/70 cast bullets coming out of Lee molds. I got the sizing dies (no need to buy the gas check seater separately, it comes with the package) and the black moly lube which supposedly can be used at room temperature. Well, maybe my room is too cold (around 60) or I am not clever enough to use the press, but it has been a mess "all over the place" - lube coming out at the bottom of the sizer die, lube getting under the base of the bullets. Not very pretty and none of them looked like the ones you can buy. I lack of any manual that gives some advice on how to troubleshoot this (Lyman did a really poor job with the manual), I ordered the heater unit. This got me to a little bit better results, but as it does not have any temperature control, you got to play around with it switching it on and off to get the temperature right. Same thing is for the pressure that you manually apply with a wrench. A lot of try and error and I do not know if I will finally succeed with this device. For the price paid and the results I get, I probably would not buy it again and simply stick with the liquid lube (which is also a mess but deliveres consistent results and the mess with that is expected...) Tom"

Lyman bullet sizer,April 30, 2008

"This product is excellent especially for the price. It is much sturdier than the earlier Lyman models. It looks to be identical to the RCBS model except for the cast in name and the ratchet handle which should be easier to use than the RCBS handle. The way it is designed, I would expect it to be more uniform than the Saeco. It was easier to put a bullet in and out than the Saeco type I had been using. I haven't used the gas check seater but am glad it came with the outfit in case I need it."

"Good piece of equipment. Not the best built. I would probably choose the RCBS if I had to do it over. Got the Lyman because it was more economical at the time. I money isn't an issue get the RCBS. If you want to keep your costs down, this one does the job just fine."
