Penn Special Senator® Reel

This is one of the most powerful star drag reels available. Ideal for big-game fish, this reel has high-speed, precision-machined bronze alloy main gears, and stainless steel ball bearings. These strong reels feature the famous HT-100? multidisc drag for smoothness, sealed drag assembly and reinforced sideplates. Reels also have a graphite composite rod clamp and chrome-plated brass on exposed parts to shrug off corrosion.

"Works great and has not had any operational flaws on any of the 4 trips it has gone on in the month of August. This is one of several Senators that I own and they last for years on end with proper maintenance. I even have a couple of Senators that I inherited from my grandfather that are completely functional but they are retired and on display as memorabilia."

"Have used these reels for many years. They seem to be pretty much unchanged over the time. It's no wonder - there are no changes needed. Very easy to disassemble, clean, re-do drag as may be necessary. I don't believe that you can find a better reel for the the price, or even twice as much. I use mine for snapper, grouper, shark, etc."

"This reel is the best reel i have ever used. A couple of guys went out with me on my boat and we all used these reels except one. we were catching fish like crazy that day . the reels got hot but it worked like it wasn't hot. we caught a 600 lb. yellow-fin tuna that day , 247lb. blue marlin, 400 lb. thresher shark, and 3 other blue-fin tuna around 250 lbs.The reels withstood every single fight . the 600lb. yellow-fin fight lasted about 5 to 6 hours and the drag stayed the same and the bearings were fine after the fight . i would Highly recommend this reel to any fisherman who wants a reel that is reliable and will go as far as you make it . it will not just give up in the middle of the fight . if anything the fish will give up before that reel does and that is never.I will probably buy 10 more Penn special senators 114h 6/0 the day before my next tuna run out to the canyon so the day will not end with disappointment."

"I started using penn reels 45 years ago. We used the 109 and 209 for Salmon on the Columbia and all along ther Oregon Coast. I still have my 109 and 209 and the still work great. I purchased 4 114 H Special Senators 4 Years ago for Halibut fishing. after a few hundred Halibut they work flawless. They are the most durable reel on the market. No Fluff or Hype Just built to last a Lifetime. Don't spend $300.00 or more on a Big water Reel."

"Found the 113H one day going through my grandpa's basement. He told me that he bought it years ago and hasnt used it in at least 15 or so years. I took the reel and rod, cleaned it up, put new line on it and it performs flawlessly. It didn't even need to be oiled. Obviously a great reel that withstood the test of time."

Special Senator 114H, January 10, 2008

I own and use the 113H - Special Senator 4/0 - also purchased from Cabela's - and have found it a wonderful surprise for heavy surf casting - sharks and rays - and I'd imagine for sturgeon. If you can cast a heavy conventional well, you can cast this one. It balanced well with a 10' Heavy conventional Ugly Stik - rated up to 12 oz. An extraordinary value.
I have yet to use the 114H - the season has come and gone in the Northeast - but my experience with the 113H tells me the 114H will work fine too.
The "H" models use the anodized aluminum spool - light but strong - intended for casting large weights and baits, although I'm sure it's suitable for bottom fishing from a boat or trolling. If you want to cast, order the "H", rather than the trolling spool - which is designated "HSP".

Excelent 114H reel, July 13, 2007

"The reel (a 114H) was prooven during the fight with one big tuna, over 100 Kgr (200+ pounds), in a 3 hours period. The fish sank 3 times in the deep over 400 meters and using the reel and a senator rod (a 4060RS 40-60 lbs), we brought the fish back. During the sinking of the fish from the sea level to the 400 meters, the reel got hot but it nevel lost the preseted drag and the bearings worked perfectly. Finally after 3 hours fight, the fish was exausted, while the reel was not. Thank you penn for the exciting experiance."

"I have used Penn Senators for many years, both in tropical and the more colder northern waters of Scandinavia. These reels are indestructable; strong, simple, solid, doing their job excellently! They are a bit heavy, but when balanced on a rod this is never a problem.

When feeding-frenzies break the surface near the boat, I am able to throw the lure quite a distance with the Senator, even if it is probably not designed for this.
Loaded with fire-line or similar, I encounter the beasts on 600ft deep or more.

If you are going to buy a solid stayer, this one will fight every fish far into next generation!"

"I do a lot of wire line fishing for striped bass on cape cod and leadcore fishing for salmon on Lake Ontario. The Penn Special Senator works great for both applications. Its high retrieve ratio is great for reeling in large amounts of line and its dependability is Penn quality, what else can I say. I would highly, recommend this product."
