Boat Buddy,
July 1, 2009

"I ordered a Boat Buddy I for my 20ft Malibu Response LXI based on what the technical rep in Cabela's suggested. He was correct based on the length of the boat, however when I installed it it was too small and the pin would hang up. I returned the boat buddy I and ordered a boat buddy II. Aside from the boat buddy II working excellent, Cabela took the used product and exchanged it for the larger boat buddy II. I'm very impressed with their customer satisfaction policy and I will order from them in the future. They really do right by their customers! The boat buddy II is an excellent product once you get the correct size. I recommend for 18ft boats and larger ordering the Boat Buddy II."

So for very impressed,

"I've read a lot of reviews about this product some people love it some people hate it. But I have to say so far I LOVE IT!
Works exactly as promised.
Saves a lot of stress and hassle having to get out of the boat to get hooked up. No more wet feet, no more problem of not being quite on the trailer all the way to hook on.
It really makes me question why some many people don't like this product. I have to wonder did they install it correctly? Cause I'm not mechanic and it was a snap to install and works perfect every time for me.
For the price I have to say the Boat Buddy ll is extremely worth the money."

"I haven't actually installed it on the trailer yet, but it comes well build and heavy duty. I have friends with them and they work great. They make one man loading real easy, plus it reduces the time it take to get out of the water."

Very low quality,

"I have an 18 1/2 foot bass boat that has an older version of a automatic latching mechanism. After years of wear I thought I would upgrade to the latest and gratest. After purchasing, taking home and opening the packaging I had my reservations as to how well it would secure since the housing is competely plastic. (Even with the plastic shims and a good tightening you can tilt it by hand) I installed anyway and used one time. On the first load the pin did not shoot all the way through the hole on the far side of the eye and resulted in bending the pin. I removed and returned. Since then I fixed the 15 year old one that was on my trailer when I bought it and gave it a fresh coat of paint. It is ten times the quality of a boat buddy. I load perfect everytime in one attempt. Since I am usually fishing by myself I appreciate the fact that they are trying to manufacture a product for easier loads and less ramp time but they need to spend a lot more time on quality before they come out with the next one. As it is currently I would not recommend this product to anyone unless they are loading a canoe."

BB II,

"I have used the boat buddy system for 8 years since discovering that the top 2 brands of tournament water ski boats were using them as standard equipment. The boat buddy is so easy to use and allows you to safely launch and land your boat without help from a 2nd person. As a safety measure I wouldnt never recommend boating by yourself but with the boat buddy you dont need your fellow boaters to help. I really like to be able to unlock the pin before launch, put the boat in the water, unlock the winch and carefully unwind it and away I go. The biggest benefit comes in when you trailer your boat, just pull onto the trailer, power onto the trailer and up to the boat buddy gently, hit the spring loaded plate and the pin shoots through the bow hook and your secure. Connect the winch for extra protection and your out of the water in no time. Its such a great system and it adds a 2nd layer of protection when trailering haveing a 2nd attachment at the bow eye hook. I just bought a new inboard ski boat and I this was my first after market purchase to completet the package. I would never go without out one. Nick"

Boat Buddy II,

"I use my boat buddy on a 20' aluminium inboard. The boat weighs 2700 lbs. I had a double cast bow eye arrangement. Had to drill two 1/2" holes and install 1/2" steel bow eye that came with boat buddy II. After figuring out how far to back trailer into water it became very easy to use. It is a great product. I love just pulling onto trailer till I hear the snap and my partner just pulls me out."

"It did work, one time only. The idea is good but I've got a 20' bass boat and they say the BB 1 is what you need for a 20 footer. Easy to install but the first time I loaded the boat it bent the whole mechanism so the locking bar wouldn't line up right. Not made strong enough for a heavy boat. Should of tried it on my jon boat trailer first. I fish alone alot and the idea is great so I'm returning the BB 1 and going to try the BB 2. We'll review our review later."

Unreliable product,
February 11, 2007
By CDNguide

"The concept that this item (Boat Buddy I ) incorporates in theory should work.... However with the variety of factors that a boater can meet at the ramp this item barely works. Wind, angle of ramp, speed with which you go up on the trailer, whether the mechanism engages, how hard you hit it and the impact that this may have on the mechanism, all factor into whether this item will actually work. After a season of guiding (loading and unloading my 20 foot Aluminum and large motor almost everyday) I have taken this item off my trailer and am sorry I bought it. It does not do what it claims it can do."

Works great!,

"I used a Boat Buddy I for my 21 foot Kenner bay boat, and I really liked driving up on the trailor and not having to climb out of the boat to hook it up before pulling it out of the water, but after a while, it got bent and didn't work properly. I guess that's why they recommend the Boat Buddy II for the larger boats! So I replaced it with a Boat Buddy II and I am very pleased."

"I bought the boat buudy at the start of the summer and it works great. I have a large 23ft cuddy cab. My wife would back the trailer down and I would drive the boat on to the trailer out in 5 seconds! I watch people with smaller boats using there crank taking up to much time at the ramp...get a boat buddy you'll love it...and teach your wife to back the trailer down!!!!!"
