Sidesaddle Motor Mount,August 10, 2009
By TroutWranglerfrom Los Angeles
"I purchased this mount for my 14" Old Town "Sportsman" canoe. This canoe is marketed under several names for Old Town , like "Rockport" so check their website if you're not sure who makes yours.
I gave it two stars because it requires customizing your canoe or the mount before it works well. It's not bad but its definitely not great and for the money, there are better solutions available.
Once installed, it does a fair job of gripping the gunwale but the gunwale moves, so when you engage the motor, it feels like it will pull the mount and gunwale right off the boat.
I do not recommend this for mounting a motor to your canoe. A better design would include a stiffer mounting system (side of the canoe) or across the entire canoe to distribute weight.
I'm only keeping mine because the mount does come in handy for my mini trolling rig. Even still, it seems a bit more flimsy than I'd like."

"As advertised and fits on my canoe. A little bit pricey but worth it to putter around on the local lake fishing."

"I am using this rugged and versatile motor mounting device for an electric trolling motor on the side of a Gruman Sportboat (15 ft. long). This design will work on either side of a craft like mine or a canoe. I am using two C-clamps and a piece of plywood to further stabilize this motor mount's attachment to the gunwale."

"I'm a newbie to motorizing my canoe. I had read the reviews of this motor mount prior to purchase, so i knew I might have problems. At first it worked perfectly. When lifting/leveraging the motor from shallow water however, the mount disengaged as a result of that added strain. I had a lot of trouble getting the mount to get back to where it was before. Perhaps part of the gunwale warped when the mount first twisted off. Obviously some juryrigging is necessary, but I knew this was going to be the case going in, and it appears to be the only one of its kind (at least to a newbie like me). It was such a pleasure to get this lil Minnekota 30 chugging the canoe right along, that i was content to get this far."

motor mount,May 23, 2008
By Adirondackbushwhackfrom Petersburgh, NY
"I bought this after reading the reviews knowing full well that I may have had to modify it to work on my canoe. It didn't fit my canoe out of the box but it turns out that I did not have to fabricate it either. I simply took the large screw out of the bracket and turned the bracket around and put the screw back in and that gave me the tight fit on my canoe. Works great."

Needs modification,September 6, 2007
By treebeard2from south eastern PA
"If you don't own an Old Town, you'll have to modify this mount to work with your canoe. I own a Coleman Scanoe and I had to fabricate and fasten a peice of wood to replicate how Old Town uses a 3/4 peice of wood under the gunwale. Once it was done, the thing worked great, very sturdy. The placement of the handle for the trolling motor is so much more comfortable than when it's mounted on the stern."

Good Idea, Bad Results,November 3, 2006
By nas290from Alexandria Bay, NY
"The idea for the side sadle was good and is very well built(solid construction). However the mount is very sloppy when on the side of the canoe creating a lot of movement with the motor when engaged. It was very dificult to get a tight secure mount. I had to do alot of fabrication to make it fit tightly and work as it should have in the first place."
