"Just tried my new (straight) HelmsMate extension handle on my new Motor Guide VariMax bow mounted trolling motor. I did check with Cabelas prior to purchasing it to verify the ID of the mounting head. The info they gave me was accurate with a
1-1/2" ID, which fits over the wedge shaped control handle of my motor. As they advised, all I had to do was to remove the inner rubber boot, slightly spread the housing and it fits perfectly all the way on to the motor control handle. Sufficient gripping is still maintained without the rubber boot as the motor control handle is all medium-soft rubber. It works great and has enough adjustment for me to control the motor rear of the front platform seat. Removal is easy for motor storage. Very pleased with another great Cabelas product."

Fits 15 hp Mercury,

"The Helmsmate handle fits my 2008 15hp Mercury perfectly. You will have to remove the rubber sleeve and then spread the handle attachment.
It fit almost the whole tiller handle on my Mercury and still exposed the kill button. I was then able to secure it by tightening the clamp and it feels completely stable."

Great For Trolling motors,

"Ive been useing the helmsmate extension handle in my 14 foot john boat. My hand control trolling motor was a pain to use in the back of the boat because the outboard was in the way and when in the front i had to stand to operate. Now its a breeze to use in the front. I also use it on my 25 hp yamaha with no problems. I was told not to run the outboard over trolling speeds with this handle but i been running WOT with ease. I dont see any complaints right now but Ive only got about 10hrs of use out of it so far. Cheaper than buying a new foot control motor...."

"I used this is Canada this year on my trolling motor and it was just like having a foot controlled trolling motor on a camp boat. I wish I would have had this item a long time ago. Only down fall is it does not fit very well over the handle of my trolling motor had to take the rubber sleeve out of the end to fit. Will have to modify it a little other then that if you need a good extension handle for your trolling motor this is the one to buy!!! The U-joint is great takes a little to get use to but when you get the feel for it you will understand the foot control statement."

"This handle allows me to be centered in my boat rather than in the back of the boat trying to steer. Its made well & works like a charm. Well worth the little extra cost over some of the other similar products which from the reviews researched by others can be made cheaply & not function well. Helmsmate Tiller Extension Handle,

"Well, I wish I had a better report but this product really comes up short!
The section of the handle that is supposed to slide over the outboard's tiller grip / throttle doesn't fit! I'm wondering if the R&D guys at this company ever once tried it on anything larger than an electric trolling motor. Ad says it will fit most outboards - that's pretty broad. What I do know is that it won't fit correctly over a modern OMC 9.9 without risking ripping the rubber grip. It is a wobbly connection at best.

The HelmsMate clamp is molded with supertough nylon and is designed to fit all trolling motor tiller handles. On larger diameter handles simply pull the clamp open, slide it over the handle and tighten it in place.

"This is a good product, well made. It turns and rotates as it should. Only gripe, the slip-on part that goes over the outboard handle isn't big enough for my kicker motor, and it's only a little 6-horse. I fixed it so it will fit and it works fine. Other than this detail, it's a nice accessory."

"The helmsmate does not fit my 2006 model Honda 8hp outboard tiller handle. The Honda rubber grips are too large in diameter, and I suspect that other Honda motors will have the same problem. I think the Helmsmate would work well, but if you don't really need the universal I would not advise it, since it is not ridgid enough when used as a "straight" extension. Too bad, but I have to send the thing back."
