•  Buyer's Guide
•  Taper Information
Mastery lines come in a series of tapers to match your fishing requirements.
  • The Mastery Expert Distance Line has been redesigned to out-cast all other lines while still providing exceptional delivery at all ranges. Perfect for Western fishing, which requires casting large flies long distances. The extra-long compound taper puts more weight in the front of the head to delay turnover at long ranges for superior delivery. Braided multifilament nylon core.
  • XPS Tapers are an excellent cold-weather line that is ideal for spring creeks and wary fish that still allows delicate presentations at short to medium ranges. This is the lowest memory in the series. Braided multifilament core.
  • Headstart is great for beginners to execute controlled, accurate casts. A Short head design with the weight concentrated in the front of the line, enables the caster to better detect the loading of the rod. It's also great for hoppers, streamers, and nymph fishing.
  • The Stillwater's taper design coupled with its unusually small diameter gives it superior casting performance. Ideal for clear-water lake fishing or shallow water fishing. Excellent castability on windy days. Intermediate sink rate of 1.25 - 2.00 inches per second.
  • The Bass Bug Taper's Powerful head drives the fly through the forward cast while an extended rear taper enables smoother distance casting and greater accuracy. Ideal for wind-resistant ball poppers.
  • The Steelhead Taper's long head design makes it easy to reach distant fish. The front taper delays turnover, while the extended rear taper provides smooth turnover for balance and stability. Allows mending and roll casting up to 70 feet.
  • The Pike/Muskie Taper is designed to throw extra-large, bulky flies in the wind. Low memory is great for cool-water use.

    fly line, February 17, 2009
    By Mertz from Adrian, Mo

"This an excellent light to medium weight fly line. I prefer the the DT lines in 3-5wt. Fished on a fast mountain stream, it delivers the fly with delicacy and ease of casting. I have found it to perform well in about any fishing conditions, including fast water and wind."

Loads well and very durable, February 12, 2009
    By jpbeh from Omaha, NE

"I bought this line some time ago and I must say out of most of my shooting head lines this one performs the best. With my 8 wt I can toss out 70' of line without a haul, on a good double I can clear the line from the spool and into the backing. It is also very tough, given it has been fished in very dirty and sandy locations throughout its life."

Great Cold Water Pike Line, February 9, 2009
    By marlinman from Cody, WY

"I've used this line in 30 degree temps and it performs well. The line taper (much like that found on a tarpon line) helps to cast large heavy flies. I definitely recommend."

    xps #5, February 8, 2009
By piscatorialpaul from western washington state

"This line is "nervana" when used in a moderate action rod. I am a rod builder and own a couple dozen rods. I also live on the water and enjoy test casting lines. It shoots and handles great just like the boys and girls say at 3m. I was using a redington rs2 rod 9'. It will not bullet through the wind but that is not what this line is all about. I do recommend a 6' furled leader with your tippet. Happy loops to you all. By the way the rod was a #6 but the rod was "soft" enough that it worked great."

    SA XPS DT 5WT, January 19, 2009
By miduckhntrjoe from Traverse City, MI

"I bought the double taper XPS. I wanted a double taper for the improved roll casting and mending and I don't usually make casts over 30-40 feet. This line is very low memory and supple as advertised. Flies land very light on the water; however, it is maybe a little too light for most of my fishing. When roll casting the line has a tendancy "die" or not fully roll out because it's so soft. Other wise it floats nice and high and gets the job done. 4 stars because of the roll casting issue and it's on the upper end of the price range."

It loads well, shoots great and you dont need to spend a ton on it. Two of my fishing (Corey and Dennis) buddies also use this line and feel the same."

I wanted the welded loop......, August 19, 2008
    By BEAVERDAM from Northern N.Y.

"I sent for this line (dt-gray) after looking on the scientific anglers web site which indicated that the xps line this year now comes with a welded loop.Well apparently I was sent older line left over from a previous year prior to the built in loop. I was disappointed that I paid premium $$ and still had to install a leader link like I have to do on cheaper line.On the plus side the color seems to definitely not spook trout as much as brighter line does in the still water areas I have tried it.I do not understand why because I would have thought that light colored line would blend in better with the light sky background.I would have rated this line a ''4'' if it would have had the built in loop which I find is an excellent feature which in itself is worth the extra $$."

"I have currently bought 3 differant lines the still water line sinks at the perfect rate to fish chronomids and stays down well in river pools to fish streamers and wooly buggers the head start is my favorite even though I'm not a beginer any more I still like it alot it flots higher than any $80.00 line that I've used it is by far the most supple line I've use in cold water and the long distant line is what it says it is long distant very very long distant thanks cabelas"

"Dear Cabela friends, I have been fishing this line for a few weeks now and cannot recommend this product.
    1. Too much memory coils a lot
    2. Casting is very difficulty with divers and wind resistance bugs
I would recommend the Teeny Professional Series Pat Ehlers Bass, Pike and Muskie Line, it cheaper and far superior.

"Smooth, supple and casts well at 15+ feet. Casts even better at 20-40 ft. Used the line in New Zealand and it delivers a nice delicate presentation when landing on the water. Love the streamlined loop for leader attachment."

Excellent replacement for silk fly line !, January 15, 2008
    By lochlunker from Richmond, Virginia

"I recently received an antique split bamboo fly rod, as a gift. I did quite a bit of research as to the proper line to use with the rod, and learned that originally the older bamboo rods were designed to use silk fly lines. While these silk lines are indeed available, they are very expensive, and require regular, time consuming maintainance. The older bamboo rods have smaller guides than modern rods have. In order to shoot the line out, a smaller line is necessary. The SA Mastery Expert Distance line meets all of the requirements, and has proven to be just the right ticket to make the bamboo rod provide a truly outstanding experience. Thanks Scientific angler !!!"

headstart fly line, January 7, 2008
By JNORTH from fort smith, ar

"I'm not a newbie - and I own a dozen fly rods...with dozens of line bought over time. I'm past the point of caring what others think.
If effortless casts, easy pickups, decent presentations with anything from a small bass bug to a midge...this is your line! I have it on my 'workhorse rod' - a 6pc, travel 5 wt that gets fished over 100 times a year - I've had this line now long enough to have used it in wind, tight water, and big open water - it excels. Turnover is good too - billed for the beginner, I think it's perfect for almost anyone for general use fly fishing.

    XPS flyline, November 12, 2007
    By NZDrMike from New Zealand

"I have long used this flyline to fish the back country and lowland rivers of New Zealand. I can can present this line delicately and precisely up to 15 meters. So it is ideal for up stream nymphing and dryfly fishing in these waterways.
In New Zealand the XPS line is available in a grey colour rather than the brighter sunset.
I suspect that the grey colour is less likely to spook our sometimes suspicious trout.

    Headstart, October 13, 2007
By facepaint from La Barge, WY

"I bought the Scientific Anglers "Headstart" fly line for my 9 year old son who has just started fly fishing in the last 6 months. It seems to help load his rod a little better and casts well for him. I would recommend this fly line to any one who is just starting to fly fish. It helps load the rod and makes casting easier at shorter distances."

Headstart is a great bass taper, November 25, 2006
    By bluegillangler from Southern California

"The Master Series Headstart with a front loaded Weight Forward taper is an excellent line for novice casters. The taper design helps load the rod on shorter casts. Another benefit of this taper design is that the line will help anglers toss heavy or bulky flies a bit easier than with a standard weight forward line. The result is that the Headstart lines function quite well as a budget bass bug line and for casting cumbersome nymphing rigs consisting of flies, split shot, and an indicator."
