watchout,

By horrible

"I bought this tomahawk and was excited to get out and use it. Immediately I found that the metal was cheap and would not take a good edge regardless of sharpening method. I decided to take it on a camping trip to give it a chance to redeem itself. On the first day of the trip the metal deformed and the handle splintered. I was very disappointed with this product and would not recommend buying it to anyone!"

Quality Tomahawks but No Instructions,
August 4, 2009
By Clappman
from Rockford, MI

"I received the two full sized hawks on schedule. The quality was good - unfinsished hardwood handles and forged steel heads. What I did not expect was that the heads were not attached to the handles. There was no instruction as to the right way to do this - I guess you are just supposed to know. I slid the handles down and pounded the handle head down to wedge the head on and it appeared to be ok. But after a few throws the head worked loose and had to repeat the process. There were no wedges, wood or metal and no slit in the top of the handle where you might expect once if wedges were to be used. We were up at camp without access to my workshop, but I found some small metal wedges at a local general store and pounded one from the bottom up and then wrapped with duct tape to keep the handle from sliding back. This worked great and we made hundreds of throws at an old stump and I quickly became very proficient with the hawk, as did my 13 and 11 year old sons. The other thing is that the hawks do not come sharpened - the edge is squared and blund. Not sure if they are supposed to be - maybe they are intended for soft targets where this is sufficient but the old ash tree stump in our campsite required me to sharpen them. I also put a coat of spar varnish on the handles. Bottom line - it would be great if there were a page of simple instructions as to how the handle should be attached securely and recommendations for sharpening. Throwing tips would be a nice extra too, but I was able to find plenty of info on the web."

Throwing Hawk,
February 3, 2009
By countrytoby
from Odessa, Texas
|
"The handle for the Hawk I got was too short. It should stick out above the head a little. The one that was sent to me, after putting it into the head was down inside the head at least 1/4 of an inch. This being my first hawk, I called my cousin, which is a compitition thrower, and described it to him. He assured me it was the wrong handle and if it was him, he would send it back. But, I don't intend to compete so I am keeping it . I can throw it like it is esspecially no more than I will be throwing it and then just to learn how to throw it."

Good Throwing Hawk,
November 19, 2008
By cbHoo
from Ohio
|
"Very nice throwing hawk; well made, well balanced; great value. It is hard to find a hawk at this price. 2 minor nits mentioned by others: (1) it does not come sharpened (not sure why not) but it will take time to get a good edge on it. (2) the handle frequently comes out of the head when throwing at a target -- not sure why b/c I have another hawk I got from a local blacksmith that the handle never comes off so this is a little annoying."

throwing tomahawk,

By petedw

"This is a good, solid tomahawk-my brother and I each bought one, and his is great-sturdy and easy to throw. On mine however, the handle shipped was too small, so I'm going to need to make a new one as a replacement. Other than that not-so-minor problem, they're good, and sharpened up pretty well with a file and whetstone."

Fit trouble,

"For the price the blade is adequate but the handle needed to be shimmed with a leather strap to fit a rather small handle head. It nearly fell through the shaft hole. It will do the job though."

Great tomahawk,

By JT80

"I've bought 2 or 3 of these now, all well made and consistent. The handles are straight and strong, the tomahawks are nicely made. They don't come sharpened, they need grinding for a sharp edge."

A Zen Activity,

By ItalianCTYankee

"The same day I bought this Tomahawk from the new store in E Htf, CT, I was out in our woods throwing it - after giving the blade a good sharpening. Great balance and solid feel. It is true Zen when it thuds into the wood. It is already on my Christmas list for my outdoorsmen friends...including a second one for me!"

Great piece of equipment and fun,
November 22, 2007
By lak77
from Cincinnati, OH
|
"For those who have reviewed with a poor score or considering not purchasing because of their qualms:
1) The hawk must be applied from the tapered end of the handle-should go on in about 30 seconds and be firm with a couple of good taps.
2) Handles break. Unless you are proficient, you will break them. They are only wood!
3) This is great fun and can be used as for a real camp hawk or yard tool.
Don't just get one, get one for your everyone in your family!
THEY ARE GREAT!!!!!"

Cabelas Throwing Tomahawk,
August 20, 2007
By nocam1

"Bought this for my son after looking at others that were cast junk. This is a great forged hawk that he loves. Went to a recent gathering and others were trying to trade him out of it. We told them to go to Cabelas and get one ! Great price point and as always with Cabelas products, a great product !"
