Cabela's Sheepherder's Alaskan and Packer Stoves

Warm up your wall tent as well as your meals with one of our lightweight, pack-in Sheepherder's Stoves. They have a dial-adjustable air intake for precise control of oxygen flow to the flame, maintaining a constant temperature. And when it's time to pack them out, all accessories pack away inside to keep everything together.
Available:
  • The Packer Stove accommodates tents from 10 to 12 feet long. This is one stove that is small enough to take anywhere. The heat shield on the door prevents warping. It burns wood, pressed logs and charcoal, and it has a dial-adjustable air intake and collapsible legs.
    Measures: 10"W x 8-1/2"H x 23"D.
    Weight: 15 lbs.
  • The Alaskan Stove heats areas from 14 to 16 feet. It delivers increased heating capacity, yet it takes up only a little more space.
    Measures: 12"W x 12"H x 24"D.
    Weight: 18 lbs.

    Does what is EXPECTED
    Date:
So many poor reviews from people who didn't do any research on what to expect.
I purchased mine(smaller Alaskan) in the Bargain Bin. I knew it wasn't capable of keeping my 12x12 Alaknak warm ALL night, but was pleasantly surprised how well it could heat it, generating in excess of 450 Deg on stove top when totally loaded.
For Thanksgiving week whitetail hunt in No Idahe I didn't bring wood except two small bundles picked up at grocery store on the way. That small dry wood worked great. Due to heavy rains and wet snow, all other wood smoked and was harder to control in small box.
Everything about the small and light stove seemed well made and went together well. Water tank worked great and it's easy to make coffee or boil water when it is roaring.
This stove is more for when I pack with horses in the future. I recommend this for that purpose or for cooking and drying out, but not for overnight use. Bring pleny of small, dry wood too.

    Disappointed
    Date:
I like the stove, and I do recommend it, but was extremely disappointed to learn after it was delivered that the stove did not include a pipe. Pretty ridiculous in my opinion to not include the sections of pipe it would require to get it out of the tent. Not up to Cabela's usual high standard.

    Packer Wood Stove?
    Date:
I purchased the Packer Wood Stove for my Big Horn III Tent. I used the stove during the first week of archery season in southwestern Colorado for elk. The temperatures dropped into the 30's at night with a cold rain almost every night. The stove was adequate for keeping heat. It kept the tent warm for 3 to 4 hours at a time. I put two bricks spaced out with a metal grate stretched across to place the wood on. I used double wall stove pipe purchased from a local hardware store; thought it would be a little more safe. Good Stove for the money and is light. Just keep a lot of wood close by during the night.

    Saved us
    Date:
We recently purchased the Sheepherder's Packer Stove for use in our 12 x 12 Alaknak tent. On a winter camping trip with our Boy Scout troop, the temps dipped below freezing with howling winds and horizontal snow. However, my tent was nice and warm. I only needed to fill the stove with wood 1 time during the night. We also utilized my tent as a warming hut for the boys and leaders.
In addition I also purchased the water jacket and the fan to circulate the warm air in the tent. Both worked great.
The stove is very fuel effecient and saved us from an extremely uncomfortable night.
