Excellent for every day & Backpacking use.
Date:
This is the third Leatherman that I have owned, the Original, the Wave and the Surge(now mine-had it for 2 years). All three of the tools still function and two have been handed down to my kids.
The Surge selection of tools is quite good and the quality is second to none. The ability to change blades is great, the extra tools can be stored in back pocket for later needs. The upgraded scissors is a big improvement. I am really glad that the awl was added, a real need when backpacking. The holster can hold the Surge when the pliers are fully open but I would like to have a pocket for a mini flashlight.
The only negative is that the Surge is a large tool that has some significant weight. With all of the features, this is understandable.

Leatherman Surge
Date:
I have owned about 5 brand G multi tools in the last 17 years. I never had any complaints about them other than breaking the plier jaw off on one of them. The others were lost. Well as luck would have it I misplaced another one, and couldn't be with out it. So, I did some looking and decided to try a Leatherman for the first time. So far so good, I would have to say that I should have bought a Leatherman sooner. I always liked my brand G's, but this is a superior tool, I would recommend the Surge to anyone!!!!

Couldn't do my job with out it!
Date:
I am a construction Laborer and this is by far the most important tool I carry. I cut 9 wire with it all the time and the cutters are still sharp. I did manage to bend the bit exchange when backing out a 3" screw, it still works but is a little hard to close now. I know I could send it back and Leatherman would fix it but I don't want to be without it. The things I would change: Get rid of the awl and the big straight screw driver and make some bit storage ( I use the pocket clip but even if you use the provided sheath it only stores the saw or file). I would also like it if it had regular pliers instead of needle nose. And would it be so hard to figure out a way to build in tweezers and a tooth pick? Don't get me wrong this IS a great tool!

Leatherman: you get what you pay for
Date:
The Surge is a great tool. Very comfortable grip when using the pliers or knives. The outside opening knives and other tools make the Surge more universal. Things I would change: Same pliers as the 300 Supertool.
