Works well when it's not broken
    Date:
I've owned the RT44 for five years. I own 13 acres of pasture and woods and use this for cutting trails and mowing fields. When everything is working right, it mows great. BUT I have spent more time fixing and fiddling with this thing than any machine I've ever owned. The belt tension is hard to get just right. The offset feature makes for a LONG and WEAK connection to your ATV. The hitch wouldn't adjust high enough for my ATV so that the deck was level. The spindle bearings blew up after hitting one too many stumps (ok, not Swisher's fault). The B&S engine runs strong but the little plastic bits in the recoil starter break easily. Also, the 44 inch cut is pretty darn narrow, and with the grass that the ATV and the mower's wheels push down, it's not a very uniform cut.
In the final analysis, this is a decent solution for a rough-cut mower if you don't have a tractor with a PTO and don't need to mow more than ten or twenty hours a year, but be prepared to fiddle with it. Swisher customer service, by the way, is poor.

    Rough and Tough Machine

I have had one of these for about 5 years and it is pretty awesome. I have cut 2 - 3+" brush and saplings with it and head high grass. I use it to maintain woods roads. The model I have came with the recoil start 10.5 hp engine. Do yourself a favor and get the electric start. It will save you a lot of aggravation instead of having to get off the ATV to pull start it. Good thing the newer versions come with more powerful engines, as the 10.5 hp was a tad marginal. I am about to either replace the worn out engine with a more powerful electric/recoil start one or buy a whole new unit. The main problem I have had several times is the blades getting bound up when the lock-nut gets too tight. Elsewhere I read a reviewer's idea to replace the factory swing blade bolts/nuts with shoulder bolts (not threaded all the way up) to eliminate the tendency of the lock nuts self-overtightening in use. There should be a little play to let the blades swing freely or else grass and stuff can jam the blades. If and when the blades lock up you will need a long cheater pipe and appropriate wrenchs/sockets to break the nuts loose. The newer models appear to have a weaker pull tongue. Keep an extra belt and some wrenches with you so you are not shut down when (not if) the belt breaks. Factory customer service is poor.

    Swisher 44" Trail Cutter
    Date:
I have owned mine for about two years. I use it for mowing fishing paths along our river. It works amazingly well considering it is not a PTO attached mower. It cuts willows up to 1/2 inch if you drive very slowly. My main complaint is the hand clutch assembly. I have not found a good way to attach it to my ATV. I have tried using wing nuts and long bolts but it constantly shifts and occasionally falls off. The cable running from the clutch to the mower is also rather short. I have pulled it out of the place it attaches to the mower several times while making sharp turns. Other than that it is very well made.

    Swisher RT-44 Trailcutter

I bought one of these last year for my lawn company for tax purposes and have owned it for about a year and a haft. I thought it would work good at best and boy was I surprised!!! This thing is a monster! It cuts everything I can get my 500 4x4 Suzuki to ride over. It will cut thick weeds that are head high with ease. Also It will destroy a garden full of corn stalks as fast as you can drive over it.
However I give it 4 stars cause the construction of the machine is lacking. (Keep in mind I REALLY give my stuff a hard time). So far I have replaced the tounge (with one I built)cause the bolt holes have become oblonged and the original tounge bent and the weld broke. It has since been welded permentaly to the center position.
What nobody shows in the videos is it is almost impossible to back up with it offset left or right. You can not turn in the same direction as the offset cause it will jacknife as soon as you start to make the turn. The offset feature IMO is usless and when you forget and start turning and find your rear tire is about to pop it dawns on you "boy this sucks".
I shortened the back of the mower cause it drags terrible when going over humps or ditches. I have rewelded almost all the areas where bolts hold things together cause the bolts work loose and cause problems with the blades hitting the side of the mower. I've replaced the belt 2x cause mainly I can't disengauge the blade fast enough when the blade stalls out.
Lastly, I have been through 4 sets of tires ending with solids. The cheap 2ply tires were replaced right after purchase with 4ply. They did not last no time before going to 6ply. They held up ok until I got barb-wire wraped around the blade and then cut them to pieces. So do your self a favor and buy solid tires before you start doing anything serious. Otherwise I absolutely love it.
