Minn Kota® Maxxum 80 Bow-Mount Trolling Motor with Weedless Wedge™ 2 Prop

Durable Maxxum bow-mount motors handle thick weedbeds, stump fields or choked-off back waters to let you concentrate on catching fish. The Bowguard 360™ Breakaway Bow-Mounts with unbreakable composite shafts can sustain a blow from any direction. Cool Power™ engineering keeps these motors running cooler than any other motor, and the spherical bearing system produces low RPMs and high torque to reduce fish-spooking noise. Maximizer™ technology gives you five times the running power on a single battery charge. A new circuit-breaker design prevents your motor from overheating when accidentally engaged in the stowed position. Minn Kota's streamlined foot pedal with lighted directional indicator provides the most convenient steering console available. The Weedless Wedge™ 2 is the next generation of weedless prop technology from Minn Kota. This new design sports swept-back and flared blades to "wedge" weeds away for the ultimate in weedless prop performance. Each powerful motor is driven by Minn Kota's Quiet Power™. Two-year warranty. Made in USA.

Maxxum 80...as much power as I would ever need.
Date:
Got this as a quick replacement for my previous hand-controlled 72# TM that died 4 days prior to last fall's MN fishing trip. Was a bit concerned that I'd not had much time to research before purchase, and the switch to foot controlled was going to be a challenge. Long story short, this has been a good TM purchase, well worth the money. I considered the wireless, with Autopilot at first, but for the few times I might actually use that feature, combined with ability to much more quickly change directions (I fall fish the Mississippi for eyes and it gets crowded) than with the Autopilot/wireless convinced me to go this route. I have been nothing but happy and the changeout was perhaps 30 minutes, even including the hard-wiring for the plug. Bolt holes were the same pattern.
One concern...this TM is even longer than my previous one and it simply LOOKED wrong to have this motor hanging while stored with no support. Using the supplied single leg support was a good choice. I had to cut it off a few times to get the length right but now it's a good feature. If it's too long, it's difficult to get the pull/stow rope to disengage the lock, so tweak it til it's right. This was a great investment.
As far as power, it has PLENTY to spare for my 17' deep V...darn near planes me out! I'm finally used to the foot control, but be careful when turning at full speed, as you will get out of whack pretty quick. Start out mid-range, get straight and then full power. I have also had to change the seating arrangement for the front a bit. Previously, sitting very close to the front was advantage for tiller steering. I've had to install an offset pedestal to get far enough away to comfortably run the food-control. Especially in winter, with heavy clothes on. Wasn't so critical with summer clothing, but it was tough in coveralls. Now...I'm satisfied...until I change something else.

Minn Kota Maxxum 80
Date:
Purchased this motor to replace an older 55# Maxxum that I had beefed up to 70# thrust. Nothing wrong with the old one, just a very good sale on the new that allowed me to upgrade.
Minn Kota has made some very nice improvements on what was alread a great product. The depth stop on the main collar is beefier. The lift assist not only makes it easier to deploy the motor, but prevents a sharp impact when setting the motor down to the stop when fully deployed (I broke the top of main shaft on my old Minn Kota when doing this causing me to make an emergency repair while on a trip). Can't say enough about the advantages of infinate speed control over the older 5 speed settings. The 80# thrust will pull my 17' boat at an impressive 3.5 mph and you can dial it down to next to nothing. I was able to re-use my original holes that I drilled to mount the older motor. Foot pedal is also better with slightly smaller design and four rubber nubs on the bottm that keep the pedal in the same spot instead of having a tendency to slip around.
Only thing that I do not like is the need to power down using the side switch. The older 5 speed control allowed you to turn the motor completely off with the variable speed control. The new motor still shows a lighted dial on the top of the motor until you turn the side switch off. Also would be nice if Minn Kota could develop a toggle mode for the momentary switch so that you could toggle the motor with that switch instead of keeping your foot on the pedal.

New Minn Kota trolling motor
Date:
I just swapped out my old trolling motor ( Motorguide 58 lb thrust) with the Maxxum 80 lb thrust motor. Installing the new motor was quite easy on my 16 foot aluminum boat. I was very pleased with the motors performance. I fish in an area that has a tide and is usually windy. My old motor could not keep up with a strong tide flow especially if it was windy. The 80 lb thrust on the Minn Kota handled the maximum tide flow with ease! The prop cut through the thickest hydrilla as advertised. The motor was quiet and the foot cotrol user friendly. All in all I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a trolling motor. It was expensive but the Maxxum's performance was worth the price in my book.
