Picked up this jacket last week and took it out for its first field test yesterday morning. This is one durable jacket and another great product in Cabela's Guidewear line.
Conditions were wet and chilly with air temp 45F, water temp 52F, and a stiff 20knot wind out of the North. Stayed bone dry and warm due to the thicker shell material, neoprene cuffs, and of course Gore-Tex.
What I really liked about this jacket vs. other more expensive products:
1. Thicker more durable fabric (double thumbs up)
2. Longer length (Large rides below hip, I'm 5'10", 180lb)
3. Neoprene Cuffs (didn't leak water or air!)
4. Fleece hand warmer pockets
5. Adjustable hood, no drips or impaired peripheral vision
How it saved my life:
I was alone fishing from my 16' Aluminum outboard boat in a local river. Someones dog was swimming and caught in a current for a long time and then swept down into a gorge. The owner took off up and over the cliff but I was worried he wouldn't get there in time. So I threw down the fly rod, pulled the trolling motor up, and fired up the outboard. Not sure if it was a cross-current, wave, or what but just as I put the motor into FWD, and before I sat down, got thrown off balance and fell into the water.
In my rush I hadn't clipped on the kill line to the outboard nor did I put on my life vest. The way I fell in and the airtight wrist cuffs allowed air to be trapped in the sleeves which helped buoy me up to the surface quickly. Fast enough that I had plenty of time to react to my boat that did a full 360deg turn and was heading straight for me.
Being on the outside of the boats turn arc I knew it was going over me. So I kicked and reached up for the gunwale and held on as long as I could and then pushed back and down, hoping to clear the motor. I did not!
Words can't describe what a spinning prop coming at your face looks like. Nor, can I explain exactly what I did to turn and get most of my body, head and neck out of the path. It hurt bad when the prop hit my arm and when I came to the surface again, I expected to have no arm or at least no control of it. My arm was intact and the next pass of the boat I was able to get on the inside of the turn, catch the boat, and pull myself in and get control of the motor before crashing into the rocks.
From my best recollection and the photographic evidence it appears the prop caught the jacket near my right hip/kidney and being a durable fabric both prevented me from getting torn apart and slowed down the revolutions of the prop. As my prop ran up my entire right side and arm I didn't get a single laceration, just bruises. Despite the jackets outer fabric layer getting a few cuts the the blade DID NOT make it thru the inner layer. Very amazing.
The gore-text was compromised so the jacket is ruined after only 5hrs of use, but it more than paid for itself in the 2seconds that mattered.
Thanks Cabela's for making a durable wading jacket that can withstand a 20HP prop turning 1500-2000RPM. I'm pretty sure I'd be dead, armless, or severely impaired had I bought any other brand.
Oh, for those wondering, the dog made it too!
