Gotta love Goretex
Date:
Been looking for a Goretex / Thinsulate combo jacket to replace my very very old (but tried-and-true) coat. If I'm gonna spend this much money on a coat, it has to be quality materials, and Goretex & Thinsulate have never disappointed me. Saw this jacket on sale and figured I'd give it a try.
First let me say the bad things: It is a tight fit around my chest and belly for the size (should have been ok according to their size chart.) I need to lose some weight anyway and that will fix that. It fits my shoulders so that's good, that's usually the bigger problem for me, having wide shoulders.
2nd, the hood is a bit of a nuisance, as it does not lay flat when it's not up over my head. If I zip the coat all the way up to the neck and put on the snaps, the hood is halfway up my head and likes pushing my hat off.
So, the hood is a little tight around the neck when the coat is zipped all the way up when the hood is down. So I keep the front flap above my chin rather than pushed down on my neck. Or put the hood up, and then it's not tight.
The stiffness of the material will work out in time, as Goretex tends to be stiff when its brand new, and softens up after a while.
Being Goretex also explains the tightness of the material. Goretex does not stretch much at all.
I had originally purchased a size larger, but it was WAY too big - so my choice came down to being somewhat confined in the smaller sized coat or or swimming in the larger coat. I choose the former, and kept the smaller coat. It should become more comfortable with a little breaking in over time, as the materials lose their stiffness, much like a new shoe.
It's really not that bad, I'm just used to my old coat which is like a soft comfy glove after all these years.
Now the good points - this coat was bone dry and so very warm all winter. I rarely had to have more than a t-shirt on with it (if anything it may be TOO warm when the temperature is above 30f outside!) I did not have any sweat building up under the coat, even though I was sweating when it was in the 40s.
I like the reflective piping. Love the multiple pockets (although with the confining feel, it is a little hard to go into the pockets.)
I think for the intended purpose - Ice fishing during squalls - this coat should perform like a champ! I did have several occassions to try the coat during blustery cold rain and got to use the hood, which worked great, not a single hair on my head got wet, ears stayed warm, etc.
