Great Compromise
Date:
This coat is a great compromise between a super lightweight breathable shell, and a heavy duty PVC non-breathable coat.
I had been looking for a good, durable waterproof-breathable coat for a while, however many of the competitors’ fabrics are very lightweight and seem delicate. So I’d resisted buying one for fear of it being shredded the first time through the woods while snow-shoeing or hiking.
The nylon shell is relatively heavy, but sturdy and seems very durable. So far it has worked well in the cold/snow (with some layering underneath) and in the rain (with no/minimal layering underneath).
The cuffs are pretty nice, but the hood can be a little clumsy when you don’t need it.
The coat fits well, but keep in mind it is sized a little large to accommodate the zip-in liner (so without the liner it is a little baggy). Also, the front dual zipper is handy when you need to sit down, but is a little small and can be tricky to get started, particularly in the cold with gloved hands.
I don’t think it is quite worth the full retail price, but definitely worth considering if its on sale and you’re looking for a good all-around waterproof breathable.

Bombproof, Great First Effort
Date:
Cabela's had not put out a fully dedicated ski jacket until now with the Grand Teton shell. It's definitely an excellent first effort.
The jacket is made from a thick, heavy duty material that really seems like it would withstand whatever nature or a firing squad, for that matter, could throw at it. I have a few other big name hardshell and softshell jackets in my wardrobe and this Cabela's jacket just laughs at all of em.
Performance-wise the Grand Teton has been flawless. So far, it has been fully wind and waterproof. It also has a decent amount of breathability despite the thick material. The contrasting zippers are a sharp touch...and they are waterproof too. Additionally, it's a dual zipper system so after you're all zipped up you can still adjust the bottom opening with the second zipper (Great for sitting on a ski lift!). The extra chest pocket and sleeve pocket come in handy too.
Weight is the first real con. The Grand Teton is substantial, but is extremely heavy compared to other high end jackets and shells. So while its ruggedness will prevent damage, it adds extra weight that some people may not enjoy. The beefy material used also creates some stiffness.
Fit is another issue, although minor. I ordered what I thought was my size but had to go a size down. This shell is cut very generously, probably for layering, but even so before you order try to determine how many layers you might need underneath...and how big of a person you are. I'm more on the skinny to athletic side which explains some of it. If you are between two sizes...order the size down.
The dual zippers is a minor issue. For those of you who have used jackets with two zippers, you know. They are sometimes stickier when you first start em. You just have to make sure they're lined up right, put some muscle into it and voila, they zip up like a charm.
Ventilation is the last issue. This jacket has no pit zips: which are an excellent way to dump heat on the go.
It is what it is. I got this jacket on sale and have been very pleased with it. Just be aware of the weight and the fit. And suggestions for Cabelas...I would add pit zips and maybe larger, less stickier zippers. Otherwise great jacket!
