Great Parka wish it had bigger zippers
Date:
Love the cut and design. Water sheds off this like a duck. Wish I would have got the insulated one as non-insulated is a bit chilly even wearing a sweater under.
My one beef is the small zippers. They are durable and work but hard to start and pull because of their small size. Usually I'm wearing gloves and this makes zippering difficult.

Must have for winter fishing
Date:
I purchased the parka and bibs for my wife and she loves them. The gore tex is 100% wind and rain proof. She couldn't believe how much more comfortable winter fishing was while wearing these.

Excellent Item
Date:
This parka is outstanding in every way! Lots of pockets, excellent fit, great collar, and the length is great. The Gortex shell feels like the same weight as the military ECWCS parkas. What is not mentioned in previous reviews is the two-way zipper that is also the same heavy duty military type. I don't know why it is being discontinued except that it's probably a marketing startegy.

Good Commuter coat
Date:
I purchased this jacket to use as a commuter coat during the cold N.E. Winters. I realize this is probably not the target market for this particular jacket but I think it is well suited for a commuter who has to stand out on a raised, completely exposed train platform in the middle of the winter.
I had been searching for a long time to replace my tattered old parka-length coat and had just about given up in despair because it seemed like most companies value fashion over utility. Which is what brought me to Cabela's to look for a coat. Outdoorsmen value utility over fashion and I figured many of the things that make a good coat for a hunter/fisherman would also make it a good commuter coat.
First and foremost it must keep you warm and dry no matter what the weather: rain, snow, single digit temperatures, gusty winds and brutal wind-chill factors. It must also be light weight and allow a full range of motion. Although I bought the coat late in the season, and haven't had the "opportunity" to test it in a all of these conditions, I have enough experience with GORETEX and Thinsulate to know that the jacket will acquit itself well in all of these areas.
The other area where utility is important - and really gets short-shift by outerwear manufacturers in both their design and advertising is POCKETS. Hunters, fishers and commuters need lots of pockets that are easy to get into with a gloved hand and placed where they are useful. The photos on-line show the bellows pockets at the bottom of the parka and the two zippered side-entry breast pockets. What is not shown (or mentioned in the description) are the two fleece-lined handwarmer pockets behind two bellows pockets or the two additional zippered breast pockets hiding behind the vertical flaps on the breasts. These hidden pockets are perfect for documents that need to be protected from the elements but still readily available (hunting/fishing licenses, train tickets, driver’s license, etc). Inside are two zippered breast pockets that are Ideal for electronics that need to be kept warm and out of the weather (GPS, units, radios, IPods, etc.) They are located high enough that you only have to pull the main zipper down a few inches to get into them (important on cold, windy days when the last thing you want to do is open the front of your coat). Finally there is a third zippered pocket on the inside located just behind the outer bellows pocket on the left (not sure what this one is good for – but I’ll think of something).
Oh, and the coat looks pretty good too (for those interested in fashion).
How Cabela’s could make this jacket better:
Enough with the teeny-tiny toothed zippers already. Most of the zippers on this jacket are OK. The exception is the zippers for the outer breast pockets. The tiny teeth make the zipper difficult to operate with one hand and are bound to eventually get fouled.
Add some reflective piping so the wearer can easily be seen in the headlights of a car.
Insulate and line the hood and add a fleece lining to the torso(keep the smooth lining in the sleeves-makes it easy to get in and out of).
Offer it in more colors like the marine/black and Yellow/black available on some of your other coats.
Remove the tacky BIG WHITE embroidered logos from the sleeve shoulders. C’mon folks, I understand you want to let everyone know who made the coat, but how about a simple logo over on the left breast like everyone else.
Show or describe the entire pocket layout in your descriptions/photos.
