Nice hat
Date:
Great cold weather cap. I have a large noggin and the caps with earflaps tucked inside reduce the headband size uncomfortably. The other caps with the elastic knit fold-down ski-mask style gave me a headache because in the folded-up position there was the elastic force of three or four layers of stretched knit fabric around the head.
The beauty of this hat is the size remains the same flaps up of down, and with it down it is loose enough around the ears to hear better. There is plenty of room for a gaiter or scarf under the hood, too.
It could be improved with perhaps a grommet over the ear for even better hearing, and a strip of velcro instead of the d-ring.

comfortable but not waterproof
Date:
I purchased this hat a year ago, and thought it was great. . . until I took it waterfowl hunting in the rain for the first time. It leaked all around the brim of the hat leaving my forehead and hair quite wet. I gave it another try in less precipitation and still a no go. Cabela's however, is always great and even after having the hat for a year gave me store credit. I purchased the Columbi@ Marsh Hat as a replacement.

Great (with mods)
Date:
I wear a 7 1/8" hat and ordered the Fowler cap in Medium (Sizing chart says 7 1/8" to 7 1/4" for medium - I think this would go down to 6 7/8").
This is the end of a long search for an 'ideal' winter cap. My criteria:
Waterproof (for freezing fall rain)
warm (for below zero winter use)
With bill (I use flipup sunglasses that I clip on the bill when not in use. Also wanted some eye shielding)
Ear flaps that can be worn up or down.
If down, the ear flaps should completely cover my ears.
I use the cap for late fall hiking and fishing, and winter snow shoeing and ice fishing. Temp range from -10F to +50F. Some threat of freezing rain in fall and, of course, snow in winter. Note: for really cold, long duration events I would supplement with a parka hood.
A competitor was the Cabelas' "Stormy Kromer" in either camo or plain colors (both goretex).
The Stormy Kromer's are a bit more baseball cap type and the plain version more styled for everyday wear. But if you read the reviews, the price you pay for more compact, street ready style are smaller ear flaps. A couple reviewer's complained of cold, uncovered ear lobes. Hence I went with the Fowler for below zero use.
In my opinion the Fowler cap (and Stormy Kromer) should come with a user's guide.
You will notice in the reviews of both types, that some users complain of the 'chin straps' being uncomfortable or awkward. The straps that go across the bill are NOT chin straps (in normal use). You simply pull the flaps down over the ears, leaving the straps over the bill to put the flaps forward and cupped under the ears.
With this in mind there are several positions:
'Completely up' - just like a baseball cap.
'Down an inch or so'; the flaps cover the top of the ear. In my case, I've had a pre-cancerous thing removed from my ear and really appreciate having the sun off my ear.
'Down over the ear'. The Fowler cap completely covers the ear, in fact, the over the bill strap, pulls the bottom of the flap under the ear and close to the neck - very comfortable.
'Completely down' - flaps down and strap off the bill (and across the front of the chin). To my way of thinking this is the emergency, survival mode. The flaps flare out and deflect rain away from the neck (and outside a shawl collar sweater or squall jacket).
NOTE: I hope I never have to use the Completely Down mode!
As you can see - it is a very versatile cap.
Out of the box, I was unhappy with the fit. The Fowler cap has a 3" section of elastic at the back which gathers up quite a bit of fabric (about 1 1/2").
I would guess the Medium would fit down to 6 7/8". But, for my 7 1/8" head the elastic was pulled uncomfortably tight. It gave me a headache and tended to be pulled up to the top of my head. You will notice in the reviews that some wearers liked the tight elastic feel - maybe their heads were smaller.
I almost returned the cap, but realized that all the other features were spot on. So, I had my wife pick off the elastic and sew back on a piece of 4 1/2" long, 1" Wide twill band. This was flat' with no gathering, but if one wanted a smaller head size and no elastic, it would be easy to gather in some of the cap.
Clearly the idea of this elastic and gathering is to accomodate a wider range of head sizes.
Note: the Stormy Kromer does not have stretch and is offered in the usual range of 1/8" head sizes.
I'm going to suggest that cabelas modify the design to substitue an adjustable band in the back for the sewn in place elastic band.
With this modification, the Fowler is perfect for my needs. As is, I'd give it a 5, but since my wife had to put in the minor mod described above to get it that way, I'll give her one of the stars and only give cabelas 4 stars.
If I had to do it over again, I'd buy the Stormy Kromer, stop whining about cold ear tips, focus on protecting my ears with a hood over the cap, and save some construction work on the Fowler. That said, what I have now is great for the intended use.

Cabela's Fowler Cap
Date:
This is the perfect waterfowling cap I've been searching for. I love the comfortable stretch headband and it was sized perfectly thanks to the Cabela's sizing chart. This is a very warm cap and the ear covers are great. Thanks, Cabela's!
