I was having trouble not getting sunburnt over here in Afghanistan and there was no real civilian hats for me to buy that would get the job done so I thought it would be a good idea to shop online at Cabela's and it was a great idea because I found this hat that I wear all the time and have not been burnt by the sun since I've been wearing it. If you are looking for a hat to protect you from the sun you cannot go wrong with this one.
A great hat to keep the sun off of your face, and the back of your neck. It's a blessing to stop the sun from punishing you and turning your ears stop sign red! It works perfectly, and really is a joy to have on your head all day in the sun and heat. It's VERY light weight, and you can snug it down so you don't donate it to the fish in high winds. The only downside, (for me that is) is that I look horrible in it!
THIS IS A GOOD HAT. IT LACKS ONE IMPORTANT FEATURE I CAN'T BELIEVE SIMMS MISSED. THERE IS VERY LITTLE TO NO VENTILATION IN THE HAT. IT DOES GET HOT IF IT IS WARM OR HOT OUT.PUT A RIBBON OF VENTILATION AROUNF THE TOP SOMEWHERE AND YOU HAVE A FIVE STAR HAT.
I went to the Buda store today to try on all of the lighter weight fishing hats and when I grabbed hold of the Simms Solar Sombrero, I immediately suspected that this was going to be my next Texas coastal fishing hat. It is extremely light yet still holds its shape very well. When I saw this particular hat online, I noticed that it said "one size fits most", and that caused me to almost not even consider it. It never made sense to me to make one hat that fits every head size. But Simms has that situation figured out! When I put the Simms Sun Sombrero on my head, it felt so light and comfortable that I could not believe it at first. It was slightly loose, and that would obviously be nice when I am not moving in the boat or when the coastal winds are not blowing hard. Then I noticed the elastic drawstring at the back of the hat. I reached back and pulled the string through the loop catch, and it tightened right up. WOW! This hat is the most comfortable and adaptable hat that I have ever put my hands on. I tried the more expensive brands (some over $70) but kept going back to the Simms hat.
The Simms hat does not have the mesh openings on the sides like some of the other hats, but from years of experience on the scorching summer days in Rockport and Port O'Connor, I prefer a lighter fabric "closed" hat. The mesh versions allow too much sun to get through to my dark colored hair, and that seems to get me hotter than having the open mesh.
This is one comfortable hat with a wide enough brim to protect your face, ears, and neck---and besides that---its firm design makes it a very nice looking hat to wear even when not fishing!
