"I'll admit that the reel is nice and smooth and of typical Shimano quality. However, the "Anti-reverse roller bearing eliminates backplay" in the description is not true. It has an anti-reverse switch on the reel, but with it engaged you still get about 1/8-1/4 of a reel turn before it kicks in after casting. When you set the hook you'll get a little slack line as the reel reverses that small amount, which could mean lost fish if you're not holding on tight to the reel handle to combat this problem. I would recommend the Sahara or Sonora reels in a comparable price range from Shimano if you want true anti-reverse."

"I was wayching North American Fisherman on Tip Masters. I saw Karen Savik fishing with a twin handle spinning reel. What a beautiful piece it was, and I had to have one. After the show I went to my favorite haunt (Cabela's) and looked for it. And sure enough there it was. shimano has biult another winner at a good price. This is one smooth reel. I havn't used a trigger style, but this is easy to work with. Perfect perfect perfect."

"The Spirex is the only Spinning reel Iwill ever use. I primarily use bait casters and own 6. When it comes time for finikey bass I size down with 1/4 ounce baits and the Spirex can handle them with a med. action rod. When the big bass are on the Spirex is great with a really smooth drag. Please Shimano do NOT raise the price as this is one of the great values in fishing."

"This was my first Shimano reel ever and, my last. After trying it out a couple of times i noticed the line just, where your finger holds on to the Quick Fire II Trigger, was in real bad shape. I took the Quick Fire II Trigger off but, the reel wobbles to much I've been spinning for 30years, never had this problem with other reels."

"Bought this (FD4000) at the Post Falls ID store on a Cabela's Mag touch rod (med). I have used Shimano many times in the past, but this was my first new reel in many many years. I spent about 30-45 minutes playing with all the different display models within the $70 dollars and below zone I limited myself to.
Something about the double handled design attracted me. Couple that with the quick fire design (reminiscent of the very first Shimano reel I bought with my summer lawn mowing money 20 years ago), and a nice smooth solid retrieval; I was sold.
Out fishing it was a joy to use. drag worked great, casts great etc. The only thing that I wish was different is the spin back you get, there is no instant reverse stop like some others have mentioned. I relate this to the fact that the trigger for the bail release has to be up, so it will spin a 1/2 turn either way to get it to that point. Not a big deal at all for me.
All in all I like what you get at the low price point. It functions great, looks good and has a real solid feel to it. It may be heavier for some but I like that weight in my hand. I like it enough that I plan on setting up my wife and kids with the same set-ups. I will review the Cabela's Mag touch rod later, but I will say it was a good buy at 50% off."

"I love all the Shimano reels with the "Quick Fire" one-finger trigger for casting. Where I go fishing, we always use 4-pound test line, so I get the smallest model. The Spirex reels have been my favorite for a few years, and I am excited to try this new model with even more ball bearings. They are smooth-operating. And Spirex seems to have less tangles than prior Shimano models. One thing I don't like about the Spirex is the double handle. I always cut off one handle with my band saw!"

"I fish the Florida everglades,casting all the time I'm fishing. This reel stops ,as you reverse the handle, at casting position, and the rapid fire feature lets me cast without looking at the reel each cast.
this is the only reel I buy, so all my reels are the same,no getting used to different reels,and one extra spool is all I need when I go fishing. PS I try to fish 5 days a week,so you know I'm hard on reels,and fishing for big snook realy gives them a workout. Tight lines...."

"I have used Spirex reels for years. I know I should be "wowed" by the quality of more expensive reels, but Spirex reels are just so easy to use. Last fall I fought a good size bull shark for 45 minutes with one. It nearly spooled me three times and finally broke off close to shore, but the reel held together very well. I still use it most often when I fish. ONE TOUGH REEL!!!"

"I have owned about ten of these little jewels. I exclusively fish for red fish and speckled trout in the Louisiana marsh near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
The reel amazes me with its ease of one-handed casting and still able to battle a 30-pound red fish. The only problem I have is that after a few years and many casts, the finger release of the bail doesn't work and I have to use it as a regular spinning reel. I do wish that part would last longer.

"I have 3 of the NEW spirex reels. 2 front drag and one rear drag. I like the size of the 2500 model. I have used the spirex models for years and like them a lot. I would have given them 5 stars but the new front drag models, unlike the old ones, do not come with a spare spool. I bought the rear drag model last year and it did come with a spare spool. The other issue I have with this new model is they come with extra washers to change the way you line wraps on the spool (so they say anyway) but they have no illustrations or instructions regarding installation of them."
