"Way too complicated to even comprehend how to operate it !! Very poorly written manual ( which you have to download) .I had help from a friend who is very computer literate and he gave up and I threw it in a drawer where it still lays.I will not even attempt to try to sell it to cause anyone else the frustration we experienced !!"

Magellan Triton 400 GPS,December 31, 2008
By CJBarkfrom Northern Michigan
"The Magellan Triton 400 is a excellant GPS for those who are new to using GPS's. The menus are easy to navigate and the creating waypoints and routes is a piece of cake. I only have one problems with this unit. It is that the buttons are somewhat hard to use for those with big fingers (Me!). Overall a great product for novice GPS users."

Triton Series,December 30, 2008
By OutdoorsmanUpNorthfrom Minnesota
"Overall, I found the Triton series a good GPS for the money. I have extensivle used nearly every handheld GPS as a former salesperson. As with every product, there are issues with which one must deal. The accuracy is good for a unit of this caliber and is much faster and precise than older models. For those concerned with the degree/min/sec, you must use degree/decimal to get the accuracy which is equivalent to deg/mm/ss.sss. Look online to convert these (FCC has a nice converter). If you want better, invest in a more expensive unit. The topo software isn't bad, but the zoom clarity leaves a little to be desired due to the resolution of the screen. I did not have the issues others stated with Nat Geo, but you must do a little reading of their help menu to figure it out. This will solve loading the map to the GPS and the gaps in the super quads others have mentioned. I did not like the smaller buttons on the unit, but I was able to use them while xc skiing in sub zero temps with heavy gloves. The last thing I would like to mention deals with learning how to use the unit. As a professional educator, we all have different levels of learning. Any unit you buy will take some time to learn. Sit down and spend some time. They are not hard to use, but you do need to learn the unit."

Magellan Triton 400 GPS,November 28, 2008
By NHDeerSlayerfrom Brentwood NH
"Bought unit for Nat Geographic Topo maps so I could use when I am hunting. The unit is okay some small problems see other reviews. Big problem is the downloading from Nat Geo is terrible. Nat Geo system crashes all the time. See Nat Geo forums for all the problems they are experiencing. I spoke with Nat Geo systems personnel and he freely admitted they are having massive problems with the software and system downloads capbility. I would not buy unless and until Nat Geo fixes all their problems."

Triton 400 Failure,October 22, 2008
By NachesBobfrom Yakima, WA
"I have National Geographic Topo mappping software and they say they have an agreement with Magellan Triton that makes downloading maps to GPS very simple. Not true. Do not buy this! The VantagePoint software is 60 megs and must be downloaded. We finally got it installed after the 3rd download and then finally got the unit to recognize the GPS. The next day, it won't work. VantagePoint will not start so I have to download and reinstall it again and again. Tech support says my computer is at fault. So we do it again and again and again and again. I've been at it for 3 hours now. The computer cannot find the GPS half the time and tech support doesn't know why. They say that my computer is buggy but my camera, flash drives, dvd's, air cards, etc, etc, work perfectly. The VantagePoint software is pretty cheesy. Tech support says my Dell D-630 computer is flawed. There is nothing wrong with my computer. The buttons on the Triton it itself require you use your fingernail to navigate and if the unit is only sticking halfway out the window, you will lose signal. Also, it lost signal a few times in my truck on the way to work. I plan on using it for hunting, but the weak signal lock and poor mapping capability is not acceptable. I've only had the unit for 2 days and I'm returning it this morning and then heading to Cabelas buy the Delorme PN-20 unit that has all software included."

"I purchase because it has the raw features i need for hunting. I had a magellan sporstrax & i love'd it, but it went bad. This one locates quickly & has extended memory to load topos. The only thing i don't care for is the smallness of the buttons."

Magellan Triton 400 GPS,August 25, 2008

"I haven't put the Magellan Triton 400 through its paces yet, so I couldn't really give it a good rating.
I'm still in the process of learning how to use it, the learning carve is not steep, but there are some things I still need to get aquainted with ie, learning more about map installations, how to setup waypionts etc.
Overall, I believe that once I get over these hurtles the Triton 400 will be my sixth sense."

Rugged,March 23, 2008
By Keith0from Indiana
"I just recieved the Triton 400 and while it seems that it will be rugged and usefull, I found the base map to be virtually useless. It didn't even show Barkley Lake in KY at all. That is a pretty big item to miss. You will have to buy mapping software. It will work with Nat. Geo. Topo maps but only at zoom levels 4 or 5. The downloadable maps from magellan worked best for me but are costly. The buttons are small and dificult to use. However the bright screen is easy to see and it has an easy to understand operating system. It is a good size to carry and I believe it will be rugged enough to withstand a tough enviroment."

great unit,March 1, 2008
By Bm643from Gilbert, AZ
"I purchased this as an upgrade to the basic Garmin etrex, which is also a great little unit. The reason I chose this unit was because the compatibility with National Geographic maps. Their maps have 1:24000 resolution versus 1:100000 of the competition. Also, the color screen and the SD card slot for the price helped my decision. I purchased the National Geographic Topo maps for Arizona and this gps the night before a recent hunt. The maps are a little pricey, but well worth it! I downloaded the maps to my computer and zoomed in on the unit of my hunt. I then connected the gps to the computer and downloaded the maps to the unit. This took a while, but well worth the wait! The maps show almost all back country roads, all creeks, streams, and rivers, and the topography of the area. The resolution is amazing! The base maps that come already loaded are very basic, so you will need to purchase other downloadable maps. But once you do, you won't be disappointed. With the SD card slot, you aren't limited to built in memory. Great for ohv use as well because you can plan your route ahead of time on the computer, then download and follow the planned route on the gps."
