"Wash with Simple Green mixed 1 to 1 by hand and rinse good and throw the foam in the dryer for 15 min. This worked for me ."

"I did email the manufacturer about the odor of the foam liner and a person within the company sent me a one sentence reply: I will be sending you new liner(s).My advice is to do the same and include your name and address in your email. I did come up with a "home remedy" that seems to have eliminated the odor.Soak the liner(s) in straight clear ammonia in a dishpan,sink,whatever for a few hours,put a weight on the liner to keep it immersed (I used a couple cans of pork and beans),rinse thoroughly and air dry.My upgrade to a 5 star rating is due to the customer service,they didn't quibble in any way and with the above home remedy,life is good."

"I spent a lot of time looking for a safe to fit my needs. This was it. I bought four, two for friends, my wife and myself. Fits my Springfield XD Sub to my Ruger ElsiePea.
Note: If you are buying multiple safes for yourself, if possible order them keyed alike (they have numbers on the locks).
A locksmith changed one for me and then I had to play with it and lose some parts. I e-mailed the manufacturer (Tim), told him it was my fault and he still sent me a new lock within a week.
About the foam, this is what Tim said "Wet the foam, wring it out and put it in the dryer for about 15 minutes. That should take care of the smell. The smell is from a fumigation that was done for shipping."
Cabela's won't let me post the manufacturer but when I called they gave it to me."

"This little safe will hold either my Ruger SR9 with an extra magazine or my 357 Magnum with no problem. Slides under the seat of my Grand Am with ease. This safe would most likely keep the smash and grab guys from getting away with anything locked in it but not someone determined with some tools and a little time. After letting this safe air out for a week it still reeks!!! which is the only reason it didn't get the 5th star. Great value for the price."

"Nice little safe, but MAN WAS IT STINKY! After washing the original foam AND using fabric softeners, and sunshine...nothing worked. So, I went to a crafts store and bought $1.80 worth of replacement foam. Now it's fine. Had to figure out how the cable worked/attached to the box.
I'll probably buy another one for the wife's car."

"Just received my Secure-It-Key-Operated Handgun Safe and very pleased with the product with one exception. As others have noted, it smells to high heaven. The issue I am concerned about it that it is a "chemical" smell. Some had suggested in earlier reviews that the problem was gone. Not yet. Good value--bad smell. Anybody know how to fix it?"

"The smell was so bad I couldn't even leave it in the house. I don't know how anyone could use this inside a car or truck. I tried washing it with everything we had in the house and it didn't help much. I don't know how well it works I couldn't stay by it long enough to try it. This is being returned."

"I had read the recent reviews on this item and understood that it isn't a real 'safe'. My purpose was to get something to secure my carry gun in when I go into a venue where carry is not permitted.
Aside from having to deodorize the foam (nasty mothball odor) the safe is as advertised. A Colt 1911 with 2 extra magazines will just barely fit. A Taurus Judge (2.5" cylinder, 2.5" bbl Ultralite) will not.
For attaching to an under-seat mounting bolt in the car, this safe works very well. You really need to put the gun in and remove it after you exit the seat. Otherwise you look like you are trying to eat the last of your Popsicle off of the steering wheel. An alternative would be to put the safe in the console or glove box if there's room.
One of the cables was missing when I received my 2 safes. I e-mailed Customer Service and they kindly shipped one right out by snail mail. Excellent response! I've had other retailers who required me to return the entire shipment which they then replaced. What a hassle. Cabela's rules on Service!"

"The storage safe was purchased to transport a Ruger Alaskan on the airlines for a remote Alaskan fishing trip. The large box worked, but with some difficulty getting it closed. The thickness needs to be just a little (1/4") bigger for this gun."

"I purchased the regular size safe for my Beretta FS92 but it would not fit. The larger unit would probably fit my FS or a 1911. The construction was good and the key lock worked just fine. The foam was of poor quality and had an terrible ordor. I returned the product because it was not large enough but I would have used the box, after replacing the foam, if it had been the right size."

"This storage safe meets FAA regulations for carrying a firearm in checked luggage. It is just the right size to hold a Glock 26 and 19. The steel cable that comes with it effectively anchors firearms left in a vehicle or hotel room. I wrapped the cable around a large bed frame that would have required substantial time to disassemble far enough to get the cable loose. It deterred the maid staff from tampering with it. I bought two of these for my frequent road and air trips. I strongly recommend them."

"Great portable gun safe! I'm able to store my 4 inch Springfield Armory 1911 Champion Operator with a Viridian X5L attached to it and two 7 round standard magazines an 8 round magazine and one 10 round magazine and a small baggy with some small tools for my gun and the X5L plus a spare battery for the X5L. I could probably fit another magazine in there, but those are all the magazines I have right now!! Fantastic product, have already recommended one to a friend."

"I bought this to have a strong lockable and concealable container in my truck for those times I need to enter areas I can't carry a firearm. The container steel and cable are strong enough to stop a casual thief, and its slimness makes it easy to conceal in my hiding place. Hopefully a professional thief wouldn't want to search that hard, then work that hard to get it out or open. I have recommended my son get one for his truck also and would recommend to others."

"I bought the larger of the 2, and it is still pretty small. A glock 36 and a couple of mags are about all it wants. The smell was pretty bad, like mothballs, it has been open in my garage for a couple of weeks and it still smells but otherwise I am impressed for the value. I would definately recommend it, but get the larger size."

"When I received the Handgun Storage Safe it did smell like mothballs. I solved that problem by putting a clothes dryer sheet under each pieces of foam. I live in a hot climate, and now I don't smell the safe when I open my car door. I like having my gun inside the car where I can safely store it, instead of locking it in the trunk. And my gun isn't getting banged around as I stash it. I'm glad I bought it. I do recommend this!"
