"I am amazed by this unit. The side imaging part of this unit is hypnotizing . I fish alot of grass beds and you can find the points in the beds with no effort. If this is the beginning I can't wait till the end."

    NMEA instalation, July 6, 2008
    By hogliner

"First off I really like the side scan function. I can pick up balls of bait fish down 80 to 90 feet. It is a all about transducer location. The split screen function with the side scan and the sounder are excellent in locating fish.

The installation instructions for the NMEA device are poor in that if you don't get it gust right you run the risk of shorting out the antenna and loosing your charting functions."

Side Imaging letdown, June 11, 2008
    By Corky310 from Seattle, WA

"I bought the 997c si to do some side image mapping of a 70' hole here in Puget Sound, but this thing can't see anything through saltwater- not even in 30'. You have to get down to around 10-20' before anything shows up and it's faint at best.
I tried it out in one of our local lakes and it performed much better in fresh water. The gps and fishfinder work well in the salt. I just wish I had spent less $$$ and got the 917c instead.
Platinum map was too pricy for what you get. If I had it to do over again, I would take another look at the Lowrance."

    997c SI - HD, January 29, 2008
    By Daleala from Alabama

"I have only been on the lake twice with the new unit. I like the display alot. I'm have some problems in getting the transducer ajusted. At first it would not read at high speed, over 15 MPH. I lowered the transducer some and it now reads at high speed 45 MPH. However. I do not get a clear return. I get the bottom reading but can not see fish. At slow speed the 80 degree response is great. I get the V's for fish that I have not got from other units. I have only used the side image feature a little. I like what I have seen so far. I think that I will have to remount the transducer so I can set it lower into the water. It appears that the 80 degree feature is picking up bubbles and clouding the deplay when I get up to 5 - 10 MHP. The 200 degree reading is clear with the current transducer location. However, it does not pick up as many fish. If I can get the transduces set so the 80 degree reading is clear, I will be very happy with the unit.

The display is bright and easy to read in sunlight. The map's displays are very good also."

BEWARE THE NVB BUNDLE!!, November 5, 2007
    By AZPhotoman33

"This graph is tremendous and will be a great assett to my fishing capabilities. The side finding is incredible and probably the most useful tool to come down the pipe.

HOWEVER.... for those of you considering purchasing the NVB mapping version, know this:

    1. The NVB Version does NOT include a base map. It only has map coverage of the Navionics lakes. If your lake is not on the NVB version, you won't even get an outline of it. The "UNI-map" is only included in the standard version of the graph.

    2. The Maps included on the NVB version are 2006 Maps! Even though I purchased my unit in November of 2007, it only comes with the 2006 maps. I didn't just get an old unit, this is direct from Humminbird.

Again, great graph, but beware the NVB version if you don't fish only the Navionics lakes."

    Absolutly Unbelivable, September 10, 2007
    By GOLDIE70 from Wallace, ID

"Just used the 997c SI for the first time this weekend. For two days, I spent more time marking underwater structure than fishing. I could clearly see defined weed beds, pockets in the weeds, road beds, bolders, sunken timber and stumps complete with the root wads! So far, I cannot say enough GOOD about this unit. It seams to work best between 3 and 6mph for the best clairity and definition. I can't wait until next weekend to use it on a different lake...Look out fish, there are no more hidding spots. If you want the upper hand over the fish, this is the fishfinder for you."

"the best investment I have made for fishing.
I have found a lot of structure on the bottom that I never knew was there, ( I have fished the same spots for over 20 years)"

    By Damsitecrappieteam from Hamilton Il

"after finishing behind other fisherman in tournies that I fished the last 3 months, that had purchased these units. I figured to compete I would have to purchase one also. It has exceded my expectation and is one of tools that I have in my box. It is hard to discribe the digital features that you see with this unit. The more I use it the more I learn. I recommend it to all serious fisherman!"

lock ups shut downs, July 9, 2007
    By dslish from michigan

"I now have had two 997si nvb the fisrt one lasted 23 days started to lock up or should i say freeze sceen. cabelas took it back no problem gave me a new one. I have had new one out three times now. system powers off in rough water. turn it back on no problem. but it resets all the days data. I fish in u.s.a. and canada It is no fun getting reset if you cant follow your tracks back to the habor. I would be afriad to travel in new water with this unit. I e-mailed the factory they said they said they will repond to me in three to five days. I have reponded to them I will be buying a lowrance unit in less than one day. thank you cabelas for your return policy. the unit works fine when it is on. I own 3 other hummingbird units that dont shut off in rough water."

    Humminbird 997c SI, June 4, 2007
By Skid1 from East Texas bass fisherman

"This unit is not for the faint of heart. The cost alone will put stress on you! I'm an engineer by trade and have fished since I was five so I had to get this unit as soon as it became available after reading the Bass and Walleye Boats review.
    1. The unit is huge and was quite tricky to mount on my 17 foot bass boat, next to my console.
    2. The screen is bright and visible with a plethora of views. Hid many views just so I wouldn't wear out the buttons going between screens. On the down side, when it rained I couldn't wipe it clean with a soft towel so I could see the display because it streaked so badly. It cleaned up OK when I got home and actually used LCD display cleaner and wipes. Recommend building a light weight shroud to keep rain off the display. Never had this problem with older Lowrance units.
    3. I’m a first time user of a GPS in a boat, works great. I needed to download the PC program to manage the waypoints. Since I couldn’t get the 997c with pre-loaded Navionics software I bought the Platinum edition for my area. That required a software upgrade from Humminbird. There are no real instructions on how to do this, that I could find but it was easy. Just put the *.bin file on a formatted SD card, put it into the right slot of the sonar unit and power up. I suspect that after the upgrade the details of the lake contours may have been reduced to handle all the video demands of the satellite imaging on the land. I couldn’t get the 3D view of the lakes to show up. The Navionics Platinum edition appears to be a waste of money, wish I could get my money back and downgrade the 997c. You get more lakes in the 2007 Gold edition Navionics. I suspect that problems with the Platinum and 997c compatibility caused the delay in distribution of the combined 997c package. Part of the problem is the lacking documentation of how this is supposed to function for a new user.
    4. For pure display and map detail the large Lowrance units can’t be beat and I now understand the customer loyalty to Lowrance products.
    5. But if you want side imaging then the 997c is great. I was able to get a large screen view of either side and then a decent medium view of both sides simultaneously. I did not get the detail quality of the “advertised” screen shots. That could be due to the wave motion on a stormy day. It takes some interpretation and familiarity with settings to get the most out of the 997c.
    6. There are some limitations for the 997c yet it is innovative and will help you find underwater structure. You will find yourself spending more time tweaking this unit on the water so practice in simulation mode and remember to look up once in a while or make sure your fishing buddy is watching out for safety’s sake!"
