Cost per shot pales in comparison to killing power,January 9, 2009
By MajorMalfunctionfrom Southern NJ
"I hunt wooded areas with ponds and also go out into large bays and salt marshes near the ocean. I see woodies, mallards, pintails, teal, blacks, canada geese, snow geese, buffleheads, brants, wigeons, etc. I see them all depending on which place I go. And because of the varying places I hunt, distances we setup based on tides, water levels, wind, size of the birds, etc; its always tough to have something non-toxic strong enough to reach further out to KILL a bird and not just wound it and then try to get it again before it gets away!
Using 3" #6 hevi-shot out of a Rem 11-87 with an improved cylinder, I DESTROYED a full sized brant at approx. 50-60 yards. No exaggeration on this! Broke one of the legs cleanly, snapped wing to the point it was a compound fracture, and had deep penetration through the breast meat. Dead before it hit the ground!
Recently shot a drake mallard that was easily 40+ yards out and 30-40 feet high from my location. Used same shot size and gun. Crumpled and completely dead before it even fell out of the sky.
No more need to every shoot 3 1/2" shells ever again. You can use a smaller length and equally important, a smaller shot size which also gives you more pellets going down range.
Can't really think of anything negative to say other than the $2+ per shell means you better practice! If you routinely sky bust #fire off all 3 rounds in 2 seconds hoping you hit something#, you will want to stick to steel for now. Hevi-shot won't help you ;)"

Hevi-Shot Duck # 6,January 1, 2009
By stkshooterfrom Florida
"I purchased 4 boxes of the # 6 Hevi-Shot and have used 2 so far. After seeing it was not taking ducks as I hoped it would I shot 3 sitting ducks in a tight circle on the water twice while watching the shot pattern hit all over top the duck. Aimed dead center and boom, boom with autoloader. I was standing 10 ft. higher on bank shooting downward too.
The ducks were swimming off, then 1 flew off. How is that possible ? I just watched the pattern hit all over them from 25 yards at the most.
I have tried this several times with the same results each time. If a pellet did not make a deadly head shot the ducks did not go down.
We tried # 5 with better results but not much better so we are now going to # 4 with hopes that is the magic #
We are using 3" in 20 ga.
Will switch to 12 ga. next year if the # 4 don't work well.
Hunted with 12 ga steel shot last year and was very dissapointed. Wanted to try something diff. so yes the Hevi-Shot in 20 ga. did a better job. But for the price it should not only kill the ducks but clean them too.
I'm thinking # 4 in 3" 12 ga. would be the ticket since it had much higher velocity.
Good Luck!"

"Great range for ducks and geese. I was on a goose hunt at tulelake NWR last week and hevi-shot had no problem taking down canada's and specks up to 60 yards. got a few a little farther. I love this stuff and will continue to use for years to come!"

"These shells are good, expensive but good. Just dont shot them the first couple shots of the season or you will feel like you are just tossing money out of the blind. Wait until you shot gets back on. That is unless you dont ever mis..haha But if you are on your on, it doesnt really matter what shells you are shotting."

Knocks 'Em Dead,November 4, 2008
By badbradfrom Bloomsbury, NJ
"I used 12 ga. 3 1/2" Hevi-Shot turkey loads in the spring turkey season with good results and wanted to shoot Hevi-Shot in fall turkey season out of my 20 ga. Benelli Ultra Light which I purchased from Cabela's. In my state the woodcock, grouse, waterfowl and turkey seasons overlap so I like to be prepared for everything. With my Benelli and a set of Carlson's choke tubes, fine shot and Hevi-Shot Duck I headed for my favorite coverts. I chose Hevi-Shot Duck because of my experience with Hevi-13 and the great rebate offered by EnvironMetal. On the way in to check the creek for ducks I encountered a flock of turkeys which contained about 20 hens and polts and 5 adult gobblers. I was fortunate to get a shot at one of the gobblers at about 35-40 yds. The 3" 1-1/4 oz. #6 Hevi-Duck load knocked him dead."

Hunting since the Mid 1970's,September 29, 2008
By SpecOps1from Orange County, California
"And have seen alot of evolutions in shot. Lead, to copper plate, to exotic metals like Bismuth....etc. As far as I'm concerned Hevi-shot has distanced itself from all the rest. It's like shooting lead except much faster. And alot less headaches than shooting steel. And the kill power is much better than steel. I know it's pricey, but well worth the expense."

hevi,September 21, 2008
By troutgodfrom Kansas City, KS
"We hunt alot of ducks here in kansas. I vividly recall a morning last season at a marsh in NE Kansas. My friend and i were both there to get a shot at the pintails that had been sighted there. Well we did at 60 yards.....With my hevi shot my duck dropped dead...while his cheep steel wounded his. He chased it around for like an hour. He had to shoot it again ruining his mount. My pintail is on my wall. Hevi shot is an EXCELLENT PRODUCT"

A great alturnative to lead,August 26, 2008
By GLM3from Birmingham, AL
"I used the hevi shot shells last year and found them to be far superior to steel in knock down power at all ranges. The heavier payload shells allow for an open choke while still having the necessary pattern density for clean kills."

Just good stuff.,July 29, 2008
By WaltinKennettSquare
"I don't waste money on Steel, It just does not stop geese like Hevi-shot does. Steel leaves too many injured bird fly away, and hevi shot just stops them. It's more expensive than steel, but I get dead birds, not cripples, plus I feel more confident that it will drop birds 25+ yards out. The other benefit is I can get higher pellet count, by using smaller shot than steel, hence higher hit and kill probability."

Throw the steel in the garbage!!!,March 7, 2008
By duckcommanderfinstrfrom Ontario
"When the CWS (Canadian Wildlife Service) banned lead shot the only alternative was steel. What a bird crippling, non lethal dissapointment that stuff is,as you all know. I switched to Hevi as soon as it came out & have been using it ever since. I even reload it myself but the price has since come down making reloads redundant. I find that the Hevishot loads pattern better, hit harder, kill more cleanly than lead and in the long run are cheaper than steel shells simply because you don't have to shoot the same bird 3 times to kill it. I only shoot 2-3/4" #6Hevi for ducks, geese & turkeys out to 50 yards & this stuff stones 'em all. I'm planning on trying it through a Patternmaster choke tube to see if I can get another 10 yards out of it ,as I know the Hevi can kill at that range, if the pattern is tight enough."

Hevi-Shot,January 20, 2008
By DaWoodfrom Blaine County, Idaho
"I am old enough to remember hunting with lead #4s for duck and # 2s for geese. I jump shoot my local creeks with a side by side 20 gage Chukar gun, Hevi-Shot kills. It breaks bones and penetrates into the body cavity. As a jump shooter I have learned to let the birds get out to 25+ yards or you will shred them. Hevi-Shot seems to have a long pattern because Dutch doubles are common. In my 20 gage it is #4s for duck and #2s for geese. Hevi-shot is better than copper plated lead."

Review 20 for Environmetal Hevi-Shot® Duck Shotshells - Per Box
"I took these with me to hunt South Dakota public lands where hunters have to use non toxic shot. I used the 3" #6 20ga shells and was making clean kills on sharptail grouse, pheasant and prairie chickens out to 45yds. The hevi shot patterned on choke tighter than lead, so a mod. choke gave me (imp-mod) performance. It turned my light M2 Benelli 20ga into a 12ga performance."
