Cabela's Gun Dog GS-6000 Training Collar

The GS-6000 is one of the most advanced in the Gun Dog line. It has an ergonomic look and feel not only in the transmitter, but in the receiver to make it more comfortable for your dog. The transmitter design has a nonslip rubber housing and backlit LCD with easy-to-find, yet protected buttons. The transmitter and receiver are both waterproof and made from heavy-duty materials. The Cabela's exclusive, patent-pending transmitter locator keeps you from losing your transmitter in the field. If the transmitter is still for more than 10 minutes, it will produce a loud tone, allowing you to find it. Transmitter locator can be turned off. Advanced transmitting technology gives these units a one-mile range, despite obstacles and terrain, and resists most interference. Battery life will no longer be a mystery, or a problem, as both the transmitter and receiver have battery level indicators, and long-lasting lithium-ion batteries with super-fast charging times of less than two hours. "I have a very energetic unfixed male GSP. He knows his commands very well, however sometimes when there's something more interesting, he chooses not to listen. With the shock collar we are able to keep him off leash and he can run, hunt, play and .....even get tired out! It makes for a happy dog and happy owners.
We love the tone button, confidence of a 1-mile range, and water resistance.
We don't usually even have to shock him any more (just use the tone button) and if we do it's no more than a level 6, so the high levels are kinda over kill. We've owned a GS-6000 for about three years, and it HAS broken twice, but Cabela's upheld the guarantee and so to me it's well worth the money!"

"I have always been very happy with my purchases at Cabela's. I did not review this product online prior to my purchase, and since it had Cabala's name. I was OK buying it. Once I reviewed the product, it was poorly reviewed, and mine did not work out of the box. The good news is that the product was taken back with no problem, and my card credited back full purchase price. I would advice that Cablea's take their name off this product. It seems to be poor at best"

"Lasted about 2 seasons of use and the collar quit working. From reading the other reviews I should have went with the cheaper collar since I am going to be replacing it this often anyways. I would not reccomend any serious hunter buying this collar."

"It lasted less than a month and then the receiver wouldn't turn on. Innotek said they would send me a new one but it would be 2 weeks before I got it. Not cool during hunting season. Save your money and buy something else. There are lots of other options in the price range or even cheaper."

"I purchased the collar after my old collar from another manufacturer quit working. I have a very stubborn Brittany, he definitely has a mind of his own. After charging the collar, we gave it a trial run. I didn't have too set the collar as high as I had to set my old one to get him to pay attention. He is responding well to the collar and it works at a much greater distance than my old collar. The ownly problem I encountered was learning how to turn the collar on and off properly. Thanks for a great product."

Not Happy At All, February 20, 2009

"I purchased this collar just over 3 years ago and I have been through 3 already.. Now the collar is out of warranty and the 3rd replacement broke. They seem to last for 1 year and then stop working. All of mine had the same problem, the reciever will not respond. I'm just waiting to see what Cabellas is willing to do for me. I will say that when it worked it was great."

"Used on several of my Brittanys during the Indiana put and take and had excellent results did find even with little use had to recharge collar every night to asure good results in the field. Order to delivery and replacement of control attenea was very quick and efficent."

"My second attempt with Innotek with two seperate products. Both were dog collars. Both fail the simplest of requirments, they need to function. Regarding the GS-6000, the idea was great at an average cost. I purchased the two dog version and found the controller awkward at best to bounce back and forth between the two collars. To control one collar you toggle one button, a very little hard to reach and sometimes non- responsive button. Throws the critical moment of correction out the window, forget it. In addition to that moment of corection scenario, the controller shuts down after some period less than an hour. You go to catch her in the act finally and the controller is OFF. "Just stay on until I decide to turn it off", that way I have control. Second moment of correction timing issue, the collars shut off after no activity, around 24 hours. Again, the moment is lost when you have to call you dog over after the dirty deed is done (correction moment) to turn her collar back on. I think other than all these weeknesses the unit could work better for one dog, not two, IF IT WORKED MORE THAN 60 days out of the box.... No more Innotek for this customer....."

"and I just sent it back. The worst thing about it is the extremely small indicator light in the collar receiver, which is impossible to see in daylight, so you cant tell if the collar needs charging or is working at all. Even in the indoor darkness its hard to see. Turning it on and off was a challenge due to the inability to see the light in the collar.

Over all, it seemed to be a cheap imitation of its manufacturer's name brand model, including the cheap, plastic (no foam padding) storage case."

"Overall this is a quality product. The the activation buttons are easy to find and use, the display is easy to read and the initial set up is also very easy and quick (just charge it up). I looked at a lot of other collars and this one seemed to have the "biggest bang for the buck" without being too fancy. I haven't gotten the chance to prove the waterproofing of the product, but it seems to be tightly sealed and has easily passed general field conditions (long damp field grass and wet lawns). The range should be adequate for most hunters demands (although I haven't really tested the collar for more than maybe 100 to 150 yards). Last, the collar came in a handy plastic storage box.

The only things I can think of that detracted from an excellant rating of this collar were my need of a d-ring on the collar for a leash attachment and also I initially had some problems with my dog feeling the effects of the collar until it was tightened up. My dog (golden retriever mix) has rather long hair and the electrodes of the collar have to be seated within the fur and against the skin. After a little trial and error, the proper fitting is easily repeated."

High Quality and very versatile, June 30, 2008

"This training collar has been an excellent tool in the training of my six month old hunter. He VERY quickly learned to respond to the "come" command- no matter what the distraction is. (e.g. chasing a rabbitt, staying out of a mud hole, etc.). Before using the collar, I could see the dog "evaluating" whether he wanted to obey "come" or to respond to his strong will. Now he ALWAYS makes the right choice. Even though the transmitter has 15 levels of stimulation, I started out at level 7 and now, if needed, I only need to use a level 4 or 5. I really like the lithium batteries, both for the transmitter or collar. The transmitter lasts for days without having to be recharged while the collar needs to be recharged probably every 2-3 days. It would be a benefit if the small flashing light on the collar(green or red) were a bit more obvious in order to determine if the collar is on or is in need of a charge. A very good value and I wish I would have had it to use on retrievers I have had in the past."

"I really liked this collar's range and the added levels that allow me to still get a reaction from my dog, even when he's being the most stubborn. However, that are times when I don't seem to get a good connection, though that maybe that I don't tighten up enough. All in all, it was a good investment."

"First things first i started off with an Innotek fp-scout it worked good for about 8 months then i believe the antenna got messed up by the charging cradle for the collar. I called innotek and they tried many different things unit eventually sending me the cabelas gun dog gs-6000 training collar i would recommend this for any body who has a dog that sometimes just doesn't will not to do what you say. this will put them straight.
Number one thing with this product it is made by innotek which has an awesome awesome warranty."

Great Collar for Beagles!, February 22, 2008

"I have a young (one year old) beagle that I have used this collar on for correcting unwanted behaviors both at home and in the field. He loves to run and is a long range dog. The collar has preformed marvelously even in rugged, hilly, tree covered terrain at distances of over 3/4 of a mile. Since this was the first time I had used an electronic collar there was a slight learning curve, but after talking to others who have used training collars I was able to figure it out. All of the features have worked as advertised and consistently. I have read a few posts that say the tone feature didn't work. The tone is soft; I guess it's designed to be heard by the dog and not all the game in the surrounding area. My father has experienced some hearing loss and he can't hear it either. If you aren't sure if it is working simply look at the indicator light on the collar to see if it lights up when you press the tone button. Below is a summary of the pro's and con's I have found with the collar:
Pro:
-Long range that works as advertised.
-Rechargeable, no need to buy batteries.
-Durable, I run my dog in rugged stuff no problem.
-Easy to read display.
Con:
- Belt clip is not reliable;use the lanyard that comes with it. The stud came loose while riding my horse and I lost the transmitter. I had the locater feature turned off, but was I was still able to find it.
- Locater feature can be annoying I shut it off."

"I had read reviews on this product prior to purchase and took a chance. I was disappointed due to the collar not working right out of the box, and then after syncing the collar and transmitter the collar would only work up to 5 feet from the transmitter. I sent the product back and purchased a different collar from a different manufacturer."

"The training collar works well. The problem that I have had is with the belt clip. It broke shortly after I got it when I bumped against something. It was'nt a hard hit, just lifted off my belt and fell apart. I got it back together without the spring and it broke again. I feel like the belt clip could be better."
