Very Nice for the $ but heavy,
November 20, 2009

"Generally, I have been very pleased with Cabelas fly fishing products, and these reels don't dissapoint!
First of all, unless you are going after trophy tarpon or billfish, I really don't see any reason for an expensive reel. Spend money on a good rod, good line, good wader and good boots. The reall rarely has to do more than hold line.
This reel hold line and does much more. It is smooth and has a very nice drag system. The larger arbor is great for a couple reasons - it allows for faster retrieve and helps reduce line coils from having line spooled on a small reel.
The only thing to consider before buying this reel is its weight. It is a tad heavy for it's size. I have the small and medium version. If you have one of those extreme high-end rods that weigh close to nothing, the heavy reel may throw off the balance, maybe."

"Been out with this reel a few times now and it is a step up from my old Genesis reel. Retrieval is very smooth and it is easy to shoot the line a distance without much effort. For fifty bucks, it's hard to beat its quality. Now if I could just catch a few fish.............."

Poor durability,

"I have used this reel fairly often for about three years on a 3 wt. creek rod ( cabela's three forks). Good rod, poor reel. The spool no longer sits tight to the reel body. It has a wobble as does the reel knob. Drag is good, but overall it's just not a long term product. I guess you have to pay for what you get."

Fantastic Reel For The Money,
July 7, 2009
By TurkeyBum
from Alabama
|
"I have purchased four of these reels over the last two years and have had no problems whatsoever, and they are MUCH more refined that the original Prestige reels. Granted, I am a casual fly fisherman, fishing maybe 10 - 14 days a year, and most of the time I only need a reel as a "line keeper". Recently, however, I put their drags to the test on a trip to New Mexico's San Juan River. Two of us caught around 20 Rainbows, the smallest being about 15" and several over 24" and these reels performed flawlessly, even with a couple of large fish that got into the backing. I'm not saying that they would stand up to big salmon, steelhead or saltwater use, but for most applications they are fine. An added feature is that they are some of the lightest reels out there, if you are trying to balance one of the newer lightweight rods without spending $300 or more for a reel. If you're looking for a status symbol that you want to worry about getting scratched and banged up, spend $300 on something else. If you just want a reel that works, buy this and spend the extra money on a high-quality fly line. At this price, buy two and throw one away if it (ever) breaks."

Cabela's Prestige Fly Reel,
May 12, 2009
By Terry222
from East Central Illinois
|
"I used automatic fly reels for the first forty years or so of my fly-fishing life. Finally decided to try the manual method. Glad I did, this reel with my 8 wt rod balances nicely and has done a bang up job for me so far this year. I am sure there are better reels around, but for what I use it for it is excellent. That is to say, bluegills and crappie with the occasional bass to keep things entertaining. Good reel at a decent cost equals good value to me."

"The reel is extraordinary for the price. I especially am pleased with its mid-arbor design The "3" holds 200 yards of 30 pond backing - nice. I like, as well, the large knob on the "drag". Simply a great reel."

Good Quality for Warm Weather,
January 4, 2009
By JRochester
from Rochester, NY
|
"I've got one of these for a 3 weight rod and have loved it as a low cost lightweight quality reel for backpacking. The only thing that is less than ideal is that in cold weather (less than 25 degrees F) this reel gums up. It is still workable at low temperatures, but you'll need to soak it in the river/lake periodically to keep it spinning smoothly."

"I like this reel - so far it has taken a lot of abuse and has held up very well. Drag works great, love the silent return. Mid-arbor at this price point is awesome. Great value overall. Won't win any beauty contests but who cares, what matters is how it performs. Hurry up and restock those extra spools!"
